I love Vanillaware's games. It's as if they come from a world where polygons never really took hold, with the love, care and lust normally going into rendering dynamic lighting and self-shadowing textures being poured into creating awesome 2D sprites.
That's what Vanillaware's new game Dragon's Crown is looking like right about now. It's a 2D ('natch) brawler with solo and 4-player co-op, destined for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, and will be the company's first debut on an HD platform.
From the looks of the new trailer and art from the gallery, it is groin-achingly gorgeous. George Kamitani's signature style once again makes burly dudes look burly and voluptuous ladies look extra-curvy. Just look at the "Amazon" character. That's some Queen's Blade ridiculousness right there.
This reminds me of the old Dungeons and Dragons sidescrolling beat 'em ups from the 90s and that's a very good thing. Even today, those games have more depth and replayability than just about any other beat 'em up.
Did they bring Frank Frazetta back from the dead to work on this? This looks like a playable version of one of his artworks. The Amazon certainly looks like something he would draw. Those sprites are amazing!
I remember seeing a clip of this during Sony's conference, and i was immediately like "What is this trickery?"
I was sold on it just from seeing that clip and it didn't even have boobies in it. Now you give me this clip and it does have boobies in it. Incredible.
Haha, the amazon and sorceress are humorously depicted!
I hope Odin's Sphere and Murumasa also make appearances on the PS3. OS has major framerate issues and Murumasa suffered from dumbed down wiimote inputs, that made it even goofy with a gamecube controller... If they do get bundled (like everything else seems to be), I hope they tweak its controlls too.
Looks absolutely gorgeous. Then again, all of Vanillaware's games have. There's just something inspiring about how beautifully illustrated the characters and environments are. Really shows how amazing 2D can look when utilizing great hardware.
The Amazon's body kind of makes me want to vomit, not going to lie. As far as the game goes, part of me wants it, but I'll probably pass cause I won't have friends to play with this online.
So let me get this straight. Sony spent 45 minutes of their press conference telling us about games that were previously announced, but they let this one slip out unnoticed? This so far is the only game I've seen for Vita that actually piques my interest. What the hell Sony?
Let's face it, if they showed that on TV someone would have gotten sued. Regardless of the fact that no one actually watches G4 outside of their coverage of events (and maybe x-play.)
Ignition needs to become a better localization company or just stop getting quality titles all together. It's so discouraging to see things like this, Arc Rise Fantasia, Lux-Pain, Muramasa, and Nostalgia given to a company that really doesn't know how to make dialogue come off as anything but completely disjointed and freakishly bland. The game itself looks incredible and that's pretty much expected from Vanillaware, but it's hard for me to be at all excited for this knowing it's going to Ignition. They need to rise up to the standards Atlus and XSEED have set for localization excellence as right now they are leagues behind.
I saw this during the showcase real and was like YES.
Very excited for this. Hopefully the combat is deeper then Murumasa(which it already seems to be)

The translation for Murumasa was pretty good. I don't remember it being bad.

Here's hoping this one goes down the same route.
