E3 Expo passes have doubled in price: $795! photo

Wow. Holy sh*t. Look, I love E3 and it's one of the highlights of my year to attend every year. I know how very lucky I am to get a free pass and a hotel room and behind-closed-doors looks at all the hottest games. It's f*cking awesome, and you'll never hear me say any less. But $795 for an expo pass?! No.

Registration for E3 2012 started this week for attendees. Those that are not industry professionals will be paying $795 for a three-day pass, and that goes up to $995 after April 23. Compare that to last year's $400 and $500. Maybe they're doubling the price to keep the swag hogs and robot head weirdos out.

As much as I love E3, it's not worth $795 to see games that you'll have for yourself months later. Some of the system-launch E3 years have been pretty exciting, but I don't know if they were worth that kind of cash. Keep in mind that general attendees do not have access to the press conferences, off-site meetings, or private showings. It's $800 to wait in lines in the Los Angeles Convention Center.

If you pay to attend E3, you are no longer allowed to complain about online passes, ever.

So E3 is now some type of elitist shit? WTF is wrong with this industry? This is getting way too far. Whoever pays this should not be allowed to use money anymore.

The highlight of E3 for me, has been the conferences. Nothing really compares to being there while new things are announced, and hearing the crowd's reaction (like Hip Hop Gamer yelling at Kevin Butler; the underage Hannah Montana cheers; and the "boos" at AT&T service - good times).

The rest of it, like you said, is mostly waiting in lines to play games. It's fun for sure, but it's not $800 fun, pre-room and board.

Does anyone else think the prices are still low? Some of the larger developer conferences can be upwards of $1000.

@oreo: ouch

Also, all the conferences are broadcast live...so what is the point of this. $800 for an expo ticket is ass. But if they really want to bite themselves in the ass, more power to them.

As if I'm going to pay $795 for a pass when killing Dale and taking over his life only costs $647.23.

Well to be honest, yeah this does suck for the people who like to get into E3, from their little fan site, or the fact that they're just a GameStop, or Best Buy employee. But this is a industry trade-show, intended for business purposes, so should those people really be there in the first place?

So this will most likely separate the real gaming journalists, from the fans, who are just there for the sake of getting to play new unreleased games. People in the gaming media always complain about the mass amount of people there, who are just impeding them from doing their job, so this will only help to thin out those people. Sure its harsh, but oh well, that's life!

Didn't they raise the requirements last year to get a press pass, like daily hits up to a certain level? It made more sense to have the toned down E3 or 2-3 years ago. They are openly making it more expensive and or difficult to get in if you aren't on of the in crowd anyway. Why continue on with the spectactle if you've made it unreasonable to go for the average person in the first place?

Thing is this seems insulting to fans, as most of the things at E3 besides the big the conferences are shown already at TGS, or PAX or Gamescom which are much cheaper and much more inviting, so the real question is why do we even need E3 anymore, it has yet again made itself completely irrelevant.

For the same price as an E3 ticket, you could buy nearly 200 pounds of OREOs from Amazon, and enough milk to go along with it. I know what I am spending my money on.

Already got my 3-day pass, hotel and flight for PAX East. And all of that together was less than $795.

@peicanada

It wont do that, it'll just be richer (and therefore twattier) fans that get in.

Not the rich people are neccesarily idiots, but spending that much money on a conference has a certain idiocy to it.

Wow, that's absurd, at least if you have to pay for the trip yourself. Used to get free passes, but had to pay my way when it came to flights, hotels, food, and that usually ended up costing as much as the new E3 Pass will cost now. Glad I found out about PAX this last year, was worth skipping out on E3 for the first time in 3 years. This price hike just made my decisions a lot more easier.

Anyone complaining that $795 is too much for a member of the gaming public to go have fun playing some upcoming games doesn't understand what E3 is about. It's not PAX—it's not FOR the public. It's an industry event, and as such, an important networking opportunity for independent developers. THEY are the ones hurt by these price hikes. Any member of the public who previously paid $400 to get into E3 was already a sucker, IMO.

having been to E3 multiple times......3/4 of the crowd is not industry professionals.....which is why they shrunk and moved the show a couple years ago and now have raised the price.

As much as fun it is to goto E3...it is not like it used to be years back and definitely not worth 800$.

Here is a crazy thought...what if I take my money and buy $800 dollars worth of games? Imagine how many cheap games I could get. The enjoyment would be at least equal if not greater than 3.25 E3 shows.

This is probably a move to weed out smaller press teams. It sucks for the diverse coverage of the event, but we could get better hands on impressions with less people.

Kinda bullshit, but E3 is still E3.
