No they don't. If DOA was multi-platform (god help us) and wasn't fueled by MS dollars, it would have died out forever ago.
Also, where the heck is Tina at?
@jamesesdad Have you actually played any of the games for more than five minutes, or are you one of the cool kids who ride the bandwagon?
I want to remain cautiously optimistic, but then again I was cautiously optimistic about NG3 as well.
Also, the only new fighters they've announced are from Virtua Fighter. I hope I'm not alone in thinkinging this isn't really a good sign.
aww, c'mon, don't be like that. we all know that DoA intentionally gave itself that title. you don't bother with ridiculous tit physics in a fighting game unless you were purposefully trying to get noticed for it in the first place.
also, it has a very simple (some try to call it words like "streamlined" to make it seem less shallow) button mashing friendly gameplay. there's very little about this game that is meant to be taken seriously.
don't get me wrong, i love me some christie and doa is a lot of fun when you smash a friend through a glass window of a skyscraper, it's just not a very deep and long lasting experience.
It focuses on rock, paper, scissors combat. Strikes beat grabs, grabs beat counters and counters beat strikes. And there are plenty of combos and strategies to rely on you have more than button mashing skills and character's weight and size play a factor in grapples. There are also danger zones like being knocked down steps and puddles, water, snow, and wind that will work against the character standing in the way. The game has tons of little things that make it great that people often ignore or don't know about. Sure boobs are there, I'll give you that. But there is a lot more to the fighting series than that.
EVO proper pretty much laughs at DOA and their fans. It's okay to enjoy a game. I'm sure beach vollyball had its audience to. But comparing it to Tekken or VF is like comparing Alpha Protocol to MGS.
Doa has been around since the Saturn. Theyre about to release their fifth installment, not unlike soul calibur or vf. So how come those games are regarded higher than doa? Because they arent a scaled down shell of a porn fighter. Your thesis that no one has attempted to play it in 17 is remarkable, but doesnt change the fact.
DOA4 was played at EVO (though many would argue EVO is a scrub tournament anyway, but that's a story for another day). Its reason for removal was simply a lack of entrants; all the top DOA players are in east Europe and Asia, so a pro league based in America was never going to get off the ground. From a purely mechanical point of view, DOA is as solid as anything else. Its main problem is few other games put such a focus on environment interaction, and it shuns fighting game standards like move priority, so it's hard to get into at a top level if you're used to the usual Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, etc.
But it really is worth poiting out that DOA does still have a strong competitive scene in continental Europe and throughout Asia. It really is just 'the west' that has yet to give it much time.
As for the tits, well, yeah. But it is getting old and it's fair for fans of the series to be fed up with people always talking about it. DOA was not the first fighting game to have 'jiggle' (Itagaki himself said he simply nicked it from King Of Fighters), nor will it be the last. Hell, try to name a fighting game that doesn't have large-breasted women in skimpy clothing. It's slightly ironic but DOA is actually one of the more conservative fighting games in this regard, when you look at the likes of Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat (and before anybody jumps on me for 'complaining' about those, I like both those series too and I'm not making a complaint, simply an observation). Of course there are the DOAX games, but... well, let's all just try to forget those exist. For the sake of our own sanity, let's forget they exist.
To its credit, with DOA5 the focus on the ladies' assets has been toned down. The game's been given an overall slightly more refined and less anime art style and right from the second this game was announced they have been promoting only the fighting mechanics. It's only fair to give them a chance. They're saying the bouncy boobs are still in there but are much more understated and shouldn't be the focus of the game and that they're working hard ont he mechanics, so I think it's only fair to give them a chance to prove that. If the game comes out and it plays like wank and the breasts are flopping around everywhere smacking the characters in the head then yes, let's call it a dumb titty game. But there's every chance it'll be a solid fighting title which just happens to have several female characters with larger-than-average chests, which itself is nothing unusual in fighting games.
I would perhaps at one time have called myself a fan of this series, but the gameplay footage of 5 leaves me feeling pretty meh, it's a shame Itagaki left :(
