Implying that we can't get twitch reflexes, and have godlike reactions on a keyboard.....tsk, tsk!!
If you can play half as many shmups and e.t.c, you can twitch as much as much as you want, when you want.

It's cool that they're porting it at all but at least do a decent job of it for crying out loud!
It's too bad you didn't have any footage to show, but it's not entirely surprising so don't feel condemned or anything (you suck, jk).
I can't imagine a developer with little experience with the ins and outs of PC development will hit a home run on the first try. Issues of latency of devices and various software layers and their impact on performace, all of the crap that makes PCs difficult to make games for will make it impossible for them to hit a home run with, and subsequently impossible for players to finish the game.
This is usually one of my key benchmarks of a port, can it be completed at all once ported to PC (I've still never finished the Meat Circus) but given the purported difficulty I don't think that criteria is a good one. It seems to me that this is a game where allowances for From Softwares relative newness to the platform should give them some latitude.
As a question, did there seem to be latency issues (controllers seeming to not respond in time, actions that should be relatively simple being either impossible or too challenging?) Did they talk about system requirements at all?
All this technical stuff is bullcrap, as it truly is a fun game, just it sucks horribly on the technical side.
I'll pick it up for 5$ on a steam sale.
If you don't know how to work on a PC game, outsource the project to a team that does have experience and could do a satisfactory job. Don't just smugly forge ahead and tell everyone that you're not going to make any effort to make the game work well.
Look at the bright side. They are actually admitting it, compared to other developers and publishers who just would lie about it.
I do wonder if this is a case of the publisher pushing the release date, and the developers are just trying to meet it. I wouldn't think the developers would normally have the attitude of wanting to shove it out the door as fast as possible compared to trying to get it right.
lots of people seemed to be arguing about how they didn't have to put up with Froms lack of experience with the PC and that we as gamers don't owe them anything, yet we obviously wanted to attract them to our platform. now it's looking like (predictably) From are having a difficult time, and everyone is saying they won't buy the game?
i hope From can continue to make games for the PC despite the community seemingly turning against them. even if they fall a little short on their first attempt i for one will be supporting them.
I call bullshit. The only reason why Dark Souls is coming to PC is because Namco sees money in the opportunity. However, entering a market means doing a little homework and From/Namco obviously haven't or else it wouldn't take a series of petitions to wake them up. They have a real opportunity here and they're blowing it by rushing a port out and completely bypassing the advantages of the platform.
Namco/From's shitty attitude towards porting the game is being reflected by their potential market's shitty reaction to a shitty port that they're forewarning us is shitty. If they don't have time to give me an experience that's on-par with other games I play on PC, then they obviously don't need my money.
Give us what we want and we'll pay. What's wrong with rejecting a contract that doesn't offer what you're looking for? No need to get emotional about it. They're big boys with big money. They'll figure it out.
see, that's the attitude i'm talking about. i want x product for y dollars.
personally i'd like to help build a good relationship between the developer and the community. it started when they listened to a petition, and i feel like giving them some leeway because of that. you think it's all about them realising they can make money on the PC, but it's more than that. PC doesn't have the same marketing that the consoles do. we can't offer them multi million dollar exclusivity deals, and we don't have official representatives to negotiate and guide the developer. it's all well and good making suggestions, but if you want to be all militant about it that's up to you. i would suggest that it won't get us far. you can call my opinion bullshit too, but frankly in much the same way as From probably sees it, it makes you sound like an asshole. From software are people too, if you want them to see you as more than a number, then try extending them the same courtesy.
Maybe they'll patch it. And then maybe ill buy it.
Sorry, but I didn't pay extra for a nice video card to play seeming masterpieces like this at 30fps. .02
For what it's worth, I don't think I'm being "militant" when I decline to buy something I don't want. How is that "attitude?" Namco aren't my friends from the block, no matter how much I love Pac Man and Splatterhouse. I "owe" them courtesy as much as they "owe" me a game. Which is to say, not at all.
Credit given: They agreed to make a PC port people wanted, and even included (with the price of admission) the extra DLC they were planning for consoles. That's more than I expected from... From. But, to make a tired car analogy on a gaming blogsite, it's like they're throwing in a badass car stereo while not including the tires. And unlike tires, there's no modding system in place to fix the issue.
And as far as communicating with them and giving them a chance, that seems trite in the face of Namco saying flat out (paraphrasing here): "Don't expect this to have the options you want. Also, GfWL. We feel bad for you, though. Now give us your money."
Well, guess what? I don't really feel bad for Namco, because they could have otherwise had a chunk of my cash and, with that, a foot in the door to PC market penetration. If this is how they handle one of their most popular releases, I'm not so sure I want them to continue releasing PC games.
I'm not about to negotiate friendship barters with a giant Japanese corporation. I speak with my spending dollars like most consumers do. Sorry if that makes PC gamers weep.
Being wary not wanting to buy it based on them not being able to optimize is pretty reasonable BUT how can you see From has a shitty attitude? They have been nothing but honest from DAY ONE about what to expect. Name another developer that would be completely upfront about their port issues? Name another developer willing to admit to their mistakes BEFORE launch. FS has been working on pretty strict limitations the entire time and they thought they could deal with it. Still there are over two months left until it launches and things could change.
As for Namco. Namco is Namco. They're assholes all around but it's not them anyone should be thanking anyway. As far as I know From owns all of their own IPs so they could have told NB to go away if they didn't want to do the port.
Anyway, for what it's worth RPGFan talked to someone working on the PC version (either a PR person or a dev they didn't specify) and were told the entire game is as smooth as the floor demo. There are any number of easy points to bring up to question that information so it really just complicates the issue.
@Tony: Trust me, when you play a lot of PC MP FPS games, twitching becomes your new best friend. Saying that you can only do it with a controller is grasping at straws.
I'd say that just dumping an unoptimized port in the laps of paying customers and not implementing the necessary improvements for the sake of a timely release date reeks of cash-cow-ism. That's shitty, no matter how you slice it.
From's being up-front and that's swell. So am I.
From Software doesn't exactly have a choice here. They were given strict time and budget limitations. Delay options are in Namco's hands since they control all the publishing stuff.
They are also epic priority fail. What's the point in having more content if the game itself runs like garbage? I doubt anyone could care less if the game was delayed. All we want is a GOOD PORT. I doubt anyone who signed the petitions imagined the game would end up running at a garbage resolution and frame rate.
They should stop hugging their wallets so tightly and just hire some people with PC programming experience.
While I agree with a total fuck up on From's part where do you expect them to find people with PC experience in Japan? There isn't exactly a thriving high end PC market there. Beyond that you make it sound like From Software is this huge studio with tons of money. They're not and from the sounds of it the port is funded by NamcoBandai and at this point is far too late to bring anyone new in. They should have outsourced it from the beginning but it's too late for should haves.
I've been wondering lately if the DLC thing was Namco's idea/demand. I seem to remember before From said they weren't planning to do any additional content for the game a while ago.
PS: It won't run at "garbage resolution". The resolution information had to do with the textures. Understandably they're not reworking all the textures in a higher resolution.
I don't think anyone is conflating Namco and From (publisher and developer), but they are attached at the hip in this situation.
Yeah maybe. I'm just more pissed at the general reaction from a vast majority of the PC gaming community over this issue. It's strange that the DToid community has one of the most reasonable and intelligent responses I've seen to it. I'm not too broken up by the whole frame rate thing anyway since I kind of expected it from the get go. I like From Software but I'd never call them great at optimization on any platform much less one new for them. Either way I hope they get a chance to patch it or the rep RPGFan talked to at E3 was right about the frame rate. I wish they had shown Blighttown at E3 along with one of the new bosses. Would have been a great way to assure people.
@CGS: Now that I think about it, I don't think it was From that said that, I think it was Bethesda for ESV.
He said they should hire people with PC knowledge. That would imply hiring people to work on it in-house. From Software is from Japan. Hence the statement.
Then...outsource the project to a team that *does* have PC experience, it's not like there's some international trade law that they have to be Japanese. It's not exactly unheard of. But no, From are just going to go ahead and do a half ass job and expect us to pay them for it. Then they say the extra content is "in exchange" for the crappy job they're doing.
They seem to have forgotten the part where people prefer to buy a quality product. A game plagued by bugs that have had plenty of time to iron out, is capped at a disproportionate framerate to any monitor in existence, and is locked at a resolution well below what anybody is using today is NOT a quality product.
As the producer said. They thought they could handle it and underestimated the challenge. They never once said the extra content was in exchange for anything, where did you get that from?
Plenty of time to iron out? They've only been given a few months to do the port. Not exactly a ton of time. The frame rate lock doesn't matter for a game like this. There will be no difference between it running at 30 or 60FPS. It's not a shooter. As for the resolution thing: No it isn't locked at 720p. What it seems like he meant was in reference to the texture resolution.
I'd rather them not port over the game to pc through outsourcing, that hasn't been the best outlet for porting, either. I wasn't expecting to get the actual DLC for the consoles, that is exciting news. I was even willing to buy the PC version, despite it's shortcomings, because i liked the game so much, if the DLC was not gonna be released to consoles.
However, i dont think From Software should be blamed for anything. Namco should have given them more time to code and optimize, but, c'est la vie. The US could not have invaded Iraq. Hitler could not have had 6 million people killed. There are worse things in the world to be infuriated about then an unoptimized pc port. and this is coming from a guy posting in his cozy home on his own computer, who is lucky enough to enjoy multiple platforms of entertainment, in this very rich and DECADENT land known as the United States of America.

"However, in exchange for that, we have prioritised adding new content for both original players and new players."
@cockaroach
The "could be worse" fallacy doesn't excuse anything. From was not up to the task, they know they're not up to it. Yet instead of trying to solve the problem, they're just going to lazily kick it over, go "eh good enough" and expect us to buy it.
The thing is missing BASIC PC FEATURES. They're literally changing nothing. Even the worst outsourcing jobs have been able to do more than that.
Well okay they did say in exchange. Really bad choice of words really dumb too. As for the frame rate here is a counter: http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2012/1549.html Yep opens up a million new questions so take it as you will. Myself however I'm just going to wait and see what happens. It's moved away from my buy at release list though. If it sucks guess I'll just buy the 360 version and play that. If not I'll pick up the PC version. At this point with two months left its not worth jumping on the "let's shit all over the developers and act like a complete assholes" train just yet. I don't see why people jump to that before seeing the final product.
