I was in the presence of the esteemed Cliff Bleszinski to get a preview gawp at Gears of War 3's campaign this week. The narrative mode of Gears is what attracted to me to the series in the first place, and I feel it odd that so many gamers write it off. I said this to Cliff, who expressed his own surprise at the situation.
"Yeah, I don't get it either," he said. "People say, 'yeah, I tried the campaign, but whatever.' Gears of War 3's campaign is very important to us, and we're going to have the longest damn campaign of the series in Gears 3. With these Pulp Fiction elements we're adding, you get a better perspective of characters like Cole and Baird.
"But yeah, I dont get why people write it off either. (Laughs) The amount of work we put into it ..."
Those "Pulp Fiction" elements revolve around the fact that there are two squads in Gears 3. We get to see events from the eyes of both Marcus and Cole's teams sequentially, so events often play out more than once but from different locations and with alternate perspectives.
More impressions of Gears 3's campaign are coming soon. I don't get why people look down on the Gears narrative either, because it's some bloody good fun!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

I love the Gears series, ESPECIALLY for its campaign. I can't wait to try it out!
I attempted to google cliffy's remarks to back up what I'm saying with a link but I'm not having any luck. I'm sure most of you guys will recall what I'm talking about though.
Honestly, I don't really enjoy Gears' Multiplayer. i enjoyed the campaign in the first two though. That said, I'm not really interested in GoW3 at all. If I do play it, it will only be so I can finish what I started.
Looking forward to all 4 game modes in this myself. I'm clearly en exemplary human being.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I fucking love the campaign, I can't emphasize that enough. However, the story is at-best okay. It's nothing against Gears, Epic, etc. It's just that when you live in a world of BioShock & Half-Life, it's hard to consider Gears among the elite. I would even say that Halo has a much better plot that Gears does, despite what the Dtoid community thinks about that franchise.
Exactly.
I think most people who have played the games (I've played through both campaigns), enjoy the campaigns quite a bit. However, just because I had a lot of fun running co-op with my brother doesn't mean that the narrative being presented is any good. I mean, maybe I was playing it wrong, but I don't even remember who "Cole" is beyond being one of the NPC's (and I'm usually someone who REALLY gets into story-lines in games).
Gears 2 was hyped from the start to have a superior story written by somebody who had done a couple of episodes of BSG and what we got were giant worms, maria and conveniently placed waist high scenery. Then the whole game went for the bigger more badass kind of mentality which in the end was just a whole bunch of scenes where the player was confined to a moving platform and asked to shoot at things.
I still can't get my head around that. No matter what else he ever says, no matter how intelligent or witty, I'll always remember him for thinking of X's and O's as another language.
I swear to god, that's like one of the paradoxes from Portal 2 for me. It makes my brain scream and give up.
I know, right? I actually lost a friend because I spoiled a part of Gears of War 2 for him. Namely, about Carmine B.
I think the storyline kicks ass imho. I could care less about the people who don't like it. Go play something else then...At least the Gears story is more understandable then the Halo & Metal Gear storylines (which both get praised alot) and both confuse the ever loving shit out of me.
Neither is a couple of teenagers that just want to bang...oh wait, that was Romeo and Juliet. See I can go to logical extremes too.
Gears 1, 360 2x
Gears 1, PC(for extra chapter) 1x
Gears 2, 360 2x
Am going to replay Gears 1 PC and Gears 2 before the 3rd is released.
Back to the original point here, don't ever try to compare anything you create to Pulp Fiction.
Why? Well, unlike Gears 1, the characters all had a distinctive personality and they, you know, showed emotion. I expect nothing less from this new installment.
