I'm fairly sure it is metroidvania. At the press conference he talked a lot about exploring and finding extra items.
Then you've probably missed a lot of pretty wonderful games through that prejudiced. That comment really shines of the "oh the box art is bad" comments.. Look at the game, does *it* look good? cause your not playing the name or the box art.
Any way: "I played both Symphony of the Night and Dawn of Sorrow last year, without the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia. They were two of my favorite games at the time, and served as my introduction to one of the longest running series in gaming. Sadly, LOSMOF just doesn't live up to its potential."
I fail to see where this game really needs to be compared to those.. No where in the presentations did it say "And for fans of SotN and DoS we've got..." Its its own game, on a new system, in a "new" series, with a new look and style.. If anything it needs to be compared to something like Castlevania 3, a game that has at least 3 characters to play and was a sidescrolling adventure more then an exploration mission (I'm not convinced this game lets us explore as much as they made it sound.. It sounded more like you needed to look for extras in the levels, when your actually in those levels, without going back --I'd like more word on that). But really, it should be looked at on its own merits (or the lack their of) rather then have to piggy back off of those past games.. Besides, its not like most of those past games hadn't been piggy backing off of SotN for ages anyhow, it was about time Konami broke the cycle.
As for the movement, I had a bad feeling about that, as its more or less one of the biggest faults of almost any game to come to the 3DS.. So I'm not all that surprised it suffers here.
Even worse than neutrality is a disingenuous enthusiasm. But then again I suppose maybe some of that enthusiasm comes from having the thrill of being the first to play something. I would imagine that could cloud ones' judgement pretty quickly.
I am worried about the controls and movement in this game; this preview isn't the first I've read that cites those as being problematic. Hopefully mercury steam pays attention- I wasn't super fond of Lords of Shadow but its controls were efficient.
Even so this is still on my list. I've gotten used to bad and unusual controls before. I need a new portable CV.
This game still has huge castle exploration, only now EXP actually has a purpose and unlocks new combat abilities rather than being some arbitrary number that lets you hit the boss for 24 damage instead of 22. And now, the enemy fights are actually interesting instead of just respawning rooms by bouncing between doors and one-shotting monsters with your strongest weapon/spell in the hopes that the one elusive soul you are missing will finally drop.
I can understand arguing against the polygonal graphics over sprite graphics, but all it takes is 5 minutes of playing Super Mario 3D Land to realize just how greatly the 3D effect can benefit from close-camera, behind the shoulder perspectives.
I feel like the people already complaining about this game are the same people who instantly shot down Final Fantasy 13 because it didn't play exactly like Dragon Quest 1-7 and Final Fantasy 1-5.
Regarding control issues, keep in mind this game isn't due out until Fall so they still have plenty of time to tweak it and take feedback from E3 into consideration.
