Jim Sterling thought I had seen a ghost or something when I ran into him on my way back to the press room at E3. What actually left the look of shock on my face was that I just got hands-on with Battlefield 3's multiplayer. I only got about fifteen minutes of action, but it was enough to blow my mind.
You guys. Battlefield 3 is f*cking amazing!
Battlefield 3 (PC [previewed], PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) Developer: EA DICE Publisher: Electronic Arts To be released: October 25, 2011
DICE threw us on a slowly expanding map set in downtown Paris in Rush mode. I was on the attackers side and my team had to arm and destroy two key points in each section of the level, the first of which was in a park. All of the outside portions where surrounded by buildings and showed off the dense urban environments DICE is pushing hard. The Frostbite 2 engine is a powerful beast and I don't expect we'll be seeing the many open and blank environments we're used to in past Battlefield games.
While I didn't witness this in my playthrough, facade destruction will be a big part of the urban combat. Players can hide on different floors of a building utilizing the many cover opportunities. The cover can be destroyed to expose enemies though and the falling pieces of the building can even kill anyone unlucky enough to be on the streets below.
The lighting system has been improved immensely as well and I got a good example of it in the second portion of the level in the subway system. The lights in the subway tunnel can be shot up so you're completely in the dark and hard to spot. Alternatively, I got to see how the Engineer class utilizes the light attached on his gun to blind other players by shining it right into their eyes.
Speaking of classes, each one has gone through a change, some of which was based on feedback right from the community. The biggest change is the fusion between the medic and assault roles. The Combat Medic has the same assault traits, but can now pack medic features such as first aid kits and shock paddles to revive downed players.
The Engineer class still can fix and repair vehicles and the sniper class can now hold his breath for a few seconds while trying to take the shot. The counter to that though is that the sniper will sway heavily for a few seconds as he catches his breath.
The biggest, and coolest change, in my opinion, is with the Support class. You can now deploy a bipod on the heavy machine gun on various surface for increased stability. Alternatively, players can go prone for better accuracy with any weapon. That's not that cool part. The cool part is that players will now get points for laying down suppressing fire. Shooting at the general direction of an enemy is always key, but now you'll get rewarded with points for it. Plus affected players by the suppressing fire will see their screen dim and shake.
Dog tags are getting a little revamp as well and will be customizable with sayings and different designs. The tags appear on a players screen after you killed them to add insult to injury.
I played through as the Combat Medic, Support and Engineer class and each one was just awesome. I sadly didn't have time to get into it as the Sniper, probably for the best as I abuse that class anyway. I need to play a lot more than just one simple round to get a real feel for Battlefield 3, but the the shock and awe I experienced was just enough to hold me over until the October release.
That reminds me, I should start looking into upgrading my computer. No way am I playing Battlefield 3 on a console.

He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

It's so true - and not for graphical reasons at all. The PC version supports 64 players at a time, compared to 24 (more than double!), and dedicated servers/mods. Yea, that's f'ing awesome - Battlefield isn't meant for just 24 players at a time.
You really can't beat jumping into a 64 man dedicated server, and seeing the same people consistently, and knowing it will ALWAYS be up 24/7 rather than relying on random people every time for sometimes inconsistent matchmaking. Considering Activision did it's best to kill old school FPS PC gaming, I can't wait.
Yeah, after hearing your excitement in the podcast, I decided if I was going to bother with a "modern warfare" fps in the near future: it's gotta be BF3. I'm actually excited about it just from hearing your guys' excitement for it.
There won't be modding for BF3, at least that's how it was for BC2. But dedicated servers are really sweet, nothing like jumping onto a favorite server and recognizing the people who frequent that same server. Thus friendships and rivalries are born.
Who cares what you play it on, It will still look good and be fun on console and PC so it really doesn't matter as long as you play it. Dice said it will still look good on all platforms.
Oh. My. God. That looks and sounds fucking amazing. I can't wait to get this game. I'll be playing on PC and 360. Because I'm a junkie? Yeah, probably.
"The Frostbite 2 engine is a powerful beast and I don't expect we'll be seeing the many open and blank environments we're used to in past Battlefield games."
I hope we still get the so-incredibly-large-it-could-fit-ten-CoD-maps-within-it sized maps. Why? One word. Jets.
"the sniper class can now hold his breath for a few seconds while trying to take the shot. The counter to that though is that the sniper will sway heavily for a few seconds as he catches his breath."
DONOTWANT.JPG This is a complete Call-of-Dutyization of BF3. In BF2 you didn't have the retarded weapon-sway idiocy that seemingly every FPS has nowadays. I for one do not welcome said change.
"That reminds me, I should start looking into upgrading my computer. No way am I playing Battlefield 3 on a console."
Normally I would say 'fuck that guy' on a comment like this but the last PC game I really played was BF2 oh-so-many-a-year ago. Such fond memories that, I too am looking forward to actually building a new rig just for BF3! Though, I will also get it on 360 because of friends.
This guy put together a nice series of C-Blogs that are pretty informative for people looking to put together an affordable gaming PC. You should definitely check it out.
I've been playing Project Reality and I could not be happier they are adding suppressing fire to BF3! It will completely change the way people approach situations. There is no being a lone hero when you are blind and disoriented by enemy fire. Hopefully this will encourage people to stick to their squads and play as a team.
i much prefer sniping in games where i dont have to hold my breath. im horrible at sniping in COD but rather good at it in bad company 2.
i wish i could afford a gaming pc :(
tho everyone i know whos getting it is getting it on the xbox
I would love to buy BF3 on my PC, but you guys over on BF:BC2 are some of the quietest motherfuckers out there. Literally. NOBODY TALKS.
And don't give me that "Everyone using Teamchat for teamwork" bullshit. If we're in squads, we're supposed to coordinate together to achieve a specific objective. You can't coordinate with the other squads on your faction if each squad is locked in their own separate ventrilo server.
So I'm probably getting this on my PS3 and then on my PC at a later date.
DICE has learned from the Project Reality mod and games such as Red Orchestra and Americas Army by adding a suppressing fire feature. This is an excellent feature and allows LMGs and HMGs to perform the jobs they are intended for. For me...this a huge improvement. I hope the feature makes it into the console versions as well. Everyone should experience this and it should be the norm in any FPS. As a former Soldier I could not be happier.
And yes, I speak as a console fanboy, but playing this on anything but a high-end computer would be a crime. Sadly that's probably what I'll have to do...
I can't afford to update my PC and i want the achieves so xbox it is :D
24 is enough for me. Btw can someone explain why the xbox/ps3 couldnt handle more players? Surely its a server/connectivity error or something and not the hardware. Pretty sure they can cope with a few more soldiers on screen.
As much as I want this for PC, I think it will be more enjoyable on my couch with my 42" screen. 360 it is!
Whatever the system, people, just please get this game over Modern Warfare 3. It's the only thing I ask of my fellow gamers, support DICE instead of Activision.
"and the sniper class can now hold his breath for a few seconds while trying to take the shot"
My fucking god, I'm so sick of this goddam trend. Snipers don't hold their goddam breath anymore than boxers hold their breath while punching. They breath out slowly while firing. This stupid piece of 'realism' is getting old.
The only people that are upset about the sniper having to "hold their breath" are snipers. Us non-point and click fans will enjoy a little balancing on that end.
I'm ok with sway, but it should be with all guns while standing up, reducing as you kneel, and none when lying prone. Unfortunately, my PC is 5 years old, hopefully the Xbox version will be as beautiful.
I really hope this is a lot more optimised than Crysis was when it came out. I want to be able to play it looking that good in the near future, not years later.
I liked the second video much better. I'm actually pretty hyped for this now, even though I've been out of the FPS loop for a spell. I just wish they would stop with the glitchy, malfunctioning camera effect in the trailers. I know it gives the trailers a unique style and builds hype, but it quickly becomes a nuisance to the eyes and ears.

Considering how lucky I am while playing (ANY) multiplayer, I expect this to be happening to me over and over again.
@Article: yeah I need to hurry up with my pc upgrade as well for this. Sorry Xbox, but you can't handle the truth..er...game.

You know have a couch experience with larger maps and 64 players.
for those wanting to see more multiplayer gameplay
Yes it will but not as launch, just like Battlefield 1942, and fuck that Sniper -hold-breath-in change, keep it hardcore
Other than that, I'm perfectly happy.
@DICE: I R NOT DISAPPOINT! Live up to the hype and you can have my monies.
I want this sooooo bad!
