E3 2007: Wii Zapper less cool than you might be hoping photo

It was hot and sexy to see Nintendo announcing new goodies right and left at yesterday's press event, and the new peripherals announced looked like they could be a lot of fun to use. As I am a fan of shooting games and Resident Evil, the Wii Zapper seemed like it would make the game experience totally awesome. I headed over to Barker Hangar a few hours later with the intention of tracking it down to see what the feel was like.

To sum up in a word: awkward. One of my favorite things about titles like House of the Dead is precision; without it, you're likely to have your flesh feasted on in a matter of seconds. The peripheral feels clunky in how movement translates to screen, which is even more confusing considering it is lightweight and easy to hold. It SHOULD work well, so why doesn't it? I had the distinct desire to rip the Wiimote and nunchuk out of the holder and just use them normally, as it seemed it would make things a thousand times easier. When you want to get a peripheral out of your way as soon as possible, it's just not a good sign.

Maybe I wasn't patient enough, but the most intuitive of controls should be easy and immediate to adjust to, the Wiimote itself being the most obvious of these. When I played Super Mario Galaxy on the Barker Hangar show floor earlier, I found myself marvelling at how much fun it was to make Mario jump and twist with barely even a flick of my wrist. This is what a peripheral should do. I'm sorry to say I've got to give the Wii Zapper a thumbs down, although I still have hopes that the Wii steering wheel will be more of a success.

I agree, it kind of is awful. I'd rather they built a custom zapper unit instead of some cruddy housing for the wii remote and nunchuk

lame. i had some hopes for the zapper. does anyone remember the shotgun looking holder peripheral that was showcased a long time ago when the wii was still called the revolution?

that looks so much cleaner/better.

I don't really see the point in it, the wii remote is kind of like a gun anyway.
The wheel looks terrible, why couldnt they make a proper one with force feed back and kick ass rumble.

Well, a big reason could be that Resident Evil Chronicles is obviously such a half hearted effort from capcom, in other words it sucks hard.

Another reason could be that the Wii Zapper is also crap, two negatives can't possiblt make a positive.

The Wii Zapper looks very non Nintendo like, it looks kind of amateurish and ill thought out, which is basically the opposite of Nintendo. Very strange peripheral.

I think the Wii Zapper has some potential. For $20 with a game, it's a pretty neat little package...

LOOK!

PEOPLE!

USE YOUR BRAINS!

Gun-shaped peripherals only work with LIGHT GUNS. The Wii remote is NOT a light-gun. The interaction between the IR sensor bar and the Wii remote is VERY VERY different from the interaction of the TV and a light gun, therefore, don't expect to get the same kind of light-gun action you do with these kinds of shapes with the Wii remote, its not gonna happen.

Never buy one of these, stick with holding the wii remote in your hand.

Something about the shape of the thing has been bugging me since yesterday, and I finally figured out what it was. The zapper looks a lot like part of the last few movies 007 logo.

@Waves--

Me too. At first, I thought they were debuting a new Wii-specific Bond game.

What's the point of attaching the Nunchuck and having to route the wire? Just build the analog stick into the unit, like in the photo Reeper posted above.

More trouble than it's worth. So much for natural and intuitive.

I never liked the look of this or the steering wheel.

Seemed a bit pointless to me.

Though, they are packaging them free so i don't think you can really expect much.

I see what nintendo's strategy is now, release a cheap system that makes the masses ooh and aaa, then nickle and dime those people with old games that are only fun for a little bit and peripherals that clip onto the controller. And release a scale that senses your tilting when all they have to do is release a belt that clips the controller onto it to sense the same tilting motions. ( I guess it can't tell if you are standing on one foot, whatever.)

I would recommend reading Dyson's review of the Zapper itself not the Zapper WITH Resident Evil: UC.

While this is nothing against Colette, if you read her review you can see the problem is with the software the Zapper is being tested with, and not the Zapper itself.
