E3 2007: Sony makes its big third-party push

E3 2007: Sony makes its big third-party push photo
     E3

Since its release, fans have been quick to question the amount of third-party support that the PlayStation 3 will eventually receive, worrying that Microsoft would herd most of the big names into its stables. Sony knows this, and that's why they took the opportunity at their keynote during the 2007 E3 Media & Business Summit to let the world know who's on their team. They're hoping to pull gamers down off the fence and into their yard to play.

Sony was excited to say that over 100 new third-party titles will be released this year for the PS3, bringing the total number up to 160 titles available in North America. Developers like Capcom, Electronic Arts, Konami, Namco Bandai, Activision, Ubisoft, and more are on board, ready to make games for the system.

We told you earlier today about how NCsoft will be creating online titles for the PS3. The word "several" was used, and refers to online titles for both the PS3 and the PSP. This could mean big things if NCsoft teaches Sony a bit about how the whole online thing works. Perhaps Sony hopes to pull in some of the 60 million users that follow NCsoft's Lineage. That couldn't hurt.

We also mentioned that Epic was working with Sony earlier. They announced a "multi-stage" agreement to make Sony systems purr. Their opimization of the Unreal 3 engine for Sony's systems will not only benefit the PS3-first title Unreal Tournament III, but will also help out 20 other games using this engine already in development for the PS3.

Ubisoft and Free Radical are bringing the exclusive Haze to the PS3 this holiday season. This first-person shooter will feature multiplayer action for the PlayStation Network, and will help strengthen Sony's new title front.

Of course, the big announcement for Sony is the exclusive on Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4. It's been up in the air for so long, but now Sony has the ball, and from what we could see at the keynote, Sony was pleased as punch to be announcing that. A new trailer with the new English cast was shown, and plans for a simultaneous worldwide release were announced.

There's no denying that Sony needed Metal Gear Solid 4, even if Sony acts like they really didn't. Jack Tretton has said that he would like the PS3 to be desired as a console that has a wealth of gaming choices rather than banking on a single title, but it seems they got that single "system seller" anyway.

Will Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots with its glorious chest-stomping goodness be enough to move PS3s now? Did the recent price drop help? Are you still on the fence? Do you still need to see more?

Sony's fatty 'third-party' release after the jump.

July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment
America Inc. (SCEA) today previewed a robust third-party software line-up and
announced new exclusive game publisher alliances for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM))
at their annual press conference during the E3 Media and Business Summit. In
addition to the more than 30 third-party titles available since launch, this
fiscal year over 100 new third-party titles will be released for PS3, bringing
the total number of first- and third-party games in North America to more than
160. This extensive library encompasses industry leading franchises as well
as new intellectual properties from Activision, Capcom, Electronic Arts, NAMCO
BANDAI, Ubisoft and Eidos.
"We have been working hard to provide third-party game publishers with the
tools they need to maximize the technological power of PS3 and we're excited
today to showcase first-class exclusive titles from our partners, as well as
new developer relationships," said Riley Russell, vice president of third
party and developer support, SCEA. "This support from our third parties is
ultimately a real win for not only the PlayStation brand, but more so for our
valued consumers who will find something for everyone on PS3 this fiscal
year."
During the press conference, exclusive third-party PS3 games and key
partnerships were announced from NCsoft(R) Corporation, Ubisoft, Midway and
Konami. The strategic alliance with NCsoft, the world's leading developer and
publisher of online games, will provide a wealth of connected gaming expertise
and create several online games exclusively for PlayStation platforms,
including PS3 and PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable), accessible through the
PLAYSTATION(R)Network. NCsoft is the creator of Lineage, the world's largest
online game franchise with a customer reach of more than 60 million.
In addition, PlayStation fans will have further reason to get excited
about growing their game libraries as Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and
industry veterans Epic Games announced a multi-stage agreement.
Revolutionizing the industry with the advent of the Unreal(R) Engine when
first launching the Unreal franchise several years ago, Epic Games has joined
with SCE to fully optimize the Unreal Engine for PS3 development to assist
developers using this engine to accelerate game creation and maximize
performance. Already underway, this optimization currently affects seven
developers using the Unreal Engine to create 20 games already in the works and
with many more to come.
As a result of the agreement, Midway and Epic Games will make the platform
debut of Unreal Tournament 3, one of the world's premiere first-person
shooters, exclusively on PS3 this fall, unleashing the full power of Unreal
Engine 3 with graphics, gameplay and challenges brought to a whole new level.
Featuring powerful futuristic weapons and vehicles unlike anything seen
before, players will engage in intense and hyper-realistic battles with other
players online, or against the Unreal artificial intelligence that has become
the defacto industry standard.
"The raw power of PS3 and Unreal Engine 3 allow us to provide gamers the
full Unreal Tournament 3 first-person shooter experience normally found only
on a PC," said Mark Rein, vice president, Epic Games. "The PS3 is the ideal
platform for us to deliver stunning visuals and awesome gameplay. But now,
with the PLAYSTATION Network, we're also delivering a great community
experience and robust user-created content -- everything that gamers have come
to expect from the Unreal Tournament franchise -- for the first time on a home
entertainment system."
Also, releasing this fall, legendary PlayStation development team Free
Radical Design and leading publisher Ubisoft have teamed up to deliver the
mind-altering, technologically superior game HAZE exclusively for PS3 this

holiday season. This highly anticipated first-person shooter marks the next-
generation debut for Free Radical, and will introduce unique gameplay driven
by 'Nectar'. Providing players with the opportunity to fight on both sides of

the same war, HAZE also features genre-defining multiplayer action for the
PLAYSTATION Network.
"Ubisoft and Free Radical are thrilled to be introducing Haze exclusively
for PS3 this holiday," said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at

Ubisoft. "When you combine Ubisoft's reputation for top quality FPS games,
Free Radical's outstanding track record on SCE platforms, and PS3's power and
network functionality, it is clear that HAZE will open up a new arena of

entertainment possibilities for players everywhere."
Set for a simultaneous worldwide launch in early 2008 exclusively on PS3,
a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid(R) 4: Guns of the Patriots also was

unveiled during the press conference. In a six minute presentation of all-new
footage, the latest Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer features stunning real-time
graphics, new revelations in the ongoing Metal Gear saga, and a new location

that will be one of many backdrops of Solid Snake's final, globetrotting
mission. In its first-ever presentation in English, the new trailer also
offers a taste of Kojima Production's ambitious, stylized localization of the

game's original script, penned by Hideo Kojima himself, and highlighted by the
return of the industry's most memorable voice talent, featuring David Hayter
as Old Snake, Pat Zimmerman as Liquid Ocelot, and Phil LaMarr, who will

reprise his role as iconic Metal Gear Solid 2 character, Vamp.
In addition to these key exclusives from NCSoft, Ubisoft, Midway, Konami,
Epic Games and many other publishers, gamers can look forward to 15 more PS3

only games from SCE this fiscal year that truly demonstrate the advanced
technological capabilities of the system.

Wow more cut scenes how exciting. Yeah makes the curb stomp look weak. At least I perform the curb stomp in gears. I don't have to watch it in another damn cut scene. You probably can't even perform a curb stomp in MGS4. I wish they'd just show damn gameplay footage already. to hell with cut scenes!

I don't need more but I'm still going to hold out. It's not Sony's fault that I lack the funds to purchase a HD television.

still on the fence, MGS is an overrated franchise, talking to the girls back at base about my feelings isn't my idea of fun. PS3 should have paid whatever it took to keep GTA4 to itself. The 360 still looks like a brighter future.

To me, timed exclusives aren't enough to sell a system when I can just wait a couple months to play the games like UT3, haze, and probably MGS4

They announced a 'multi-stage' agreement to make Sony systems purr. Their opimization of the Uneral 3 engine for Sony's systems will not only benefit the PS3-first title Unreal Tournament III, but will also help out 20 other games using this engine already in development for the PS3.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If they get that engine optimized for the PS3 it will lessen the load for many people to get great looking games on the PS3. They'll have to pay to use the engine, but they won't have to spend a ton of time creating their own and optimizing it.

I hope this really gets the party started on the PS3.

I'll end up getting a PS3 EVENTUALLY, but damn buying a system for one game is always crazy. I'm glad they dropped the price, but its still more expensive than the Elite (which has all of the cables, HDMI and the Ethernet Cable BTW) but I wont lie, I was such a hardcore Sony fanboy back in the day, but they have seriously let me down as a company. I want them to succeed, but like it was said on the last Podtoid its a Game Console, it shouldn't be considered an investment!

I think Sony have really done themselves a good job, with the price drop and the excellent games that are now out there on the horizon. Home's really beginning to flesh out too. I've already got a PS3, so all of this makes me really happy.

Wasn't there a lot of confusion as to Haze's exclusivity? Is that all cleared up now? I don't remember Microsoft saying anything about it in their press conference.

I'll get a PS3 when it's $30 on clearance. I'll need something to play Talladega NIGHTS!!!! on.

I'm just really not convinced by their E3 posturing.

Me thinks that we'll still see MGS3 on 360. I know Hideos been kinda on Sony's side, but then you look at everyone else that works and Konami, and they all want it on more then just the PS3.

Like with everything in life, money will tell this tale. If MS wants to pony up the money, you will see it on a 360

I will buy a PS3 for no more than $200, unless it has more than 10 PERFECT exclusive games on it, the way that Resident Evil 4 and Mega Man 2 are perfect.

I can't think of more than three PS3 exclusive games on the horizon that even looks good, let alot perfect.

...Does the 360 have 10 PERFECT exclusive games? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything, but does this requirement extend to Microsoft?

Didn't anyone else read into these "exclusivity" deals the way they were stated? They said all the titles mentioned will be exclusive for this year or for next year or whatever. Sounds to me it'll be just like GTA eventually coming to the Xbox.

UT3 is already confirmed for 360, it'll just hafta wait 'til at least the winter/early spring time. Even MGS4 was only said to be exclusive for 2008. Same situation. Haze was already confirmed for 360 as well, it'll just be a matter of time.

I bet all of the titles will be like the Oblivion PS3 release where extra content is included for free, too. Plus any bugs or problems with the PS3 release version can be ironed out. Too bad I don't even care about MGS4 or Haze (losing UT3 this year hurts, but only a smidgen). I'll be far too busy playing GTA4, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Too Human, Orange Box, Halo 3, and even Smash Bros. if I can find a Wii.

Ho-hum.

it looks like i actually have to start saving up $500 for a f-ing PS3 after all...

hehe let all the wii-360 fanboys thirst the haterade!

Guys, whether you like it or not, Sony came out very good, strong on this e3, specially after that *cricket* noise when Moore announced another friggin console... gad how many boxes of RROD can MS push? ya a nice little trailer of the Hailoes but honestly I would like something fresh... something like lets say... KZ2? where heads XPLODE n all u know? realismsmsmms. No mistake, I bet yall will have fun with ur little Halo3, but its the same shit re-done.

Nintendo had a better presentation than MS, they made more jokes and for shytNgiggles I wanna try that Wii Fit (lol, Shigero call us american Fat-bastards) D: hey, loosing pounds is never a bad idea in gaming, or is it?

And honestly, sony came with a pricecut, a WHOLE bunch of F???in exclusive games with big names, new PSP with TV output, showed more games than Wii & 360 combined + CHEWBACA + Home (ok mayb take out home :P). what else can u ask for?

even if your a fanboy, u need to clap for Sony doing so good, even when they give a pricecut, they still get wacked by NBC (msnbc *cough*)

Killzone and realism on the same line. My head asplode.

Sony has had a good showing. The new PSP is much more tempting than the old one, although I still dislike that Sony is so anti-homebrew. If they just gave up and said, "Here, use this new interface we made to load and run homebrew apps," PSP sales would go through the fucking roof. I would buy one the same day.

The PS3 still has a ways to go to capture my desire. They dropped the 60GB model by $100, that's good. But they introduced another that is still $599. I don't fucking get that. One game and 20GB of disk space is not worth a hundred damn dollars. I know they need to recoup some of their losses, and bundling a game (which costs them fuckall nothing to include) is a good way to do that. But man, I really don't see that new unit selling nearly as well as the 60GB.

Maybe by this time next year, the PS3 will be affordable and interesting enough to warrant a purchase.

PSP sales would not go through the roof if you introduced homebrew that was legit (which kinda defeats the purpose) because the people who care is such a small fraction of the overall whole of its consumer base.

Okay, that’s a semi-fair jab at the PS3, but you don’t have all the facts. Yes, the PS3 is still $20 more expensive than the Elite which has a hard drive that is twice the size. And yes, it is somewhat dumb that Sony pushed the PS3 to the forefront of the HD revolution, yet decided against including any HD-compatible output cables with the PS3. But he console does come with an Ethernet cable, and if you look hard, you can get a six-foot HDMI cable online for less than $5 (plus shipping).
