E3 2007: Sony announces PSP hardware

We do have some news coming out of Sony's press conference, even though our team can't quite update: Sony has announced the PSP is getting a hardware "refresh." What does this mean? The system will be 33% lighter, 19% slimmer, and will feature a better battery life and faster loading times.

In addition, the system will be able to output to a TV! This means your pictures, videos, and games will all be playable on a big screen if you so choose. It'll support A/V, S-Video, D-terminal video, and component cables.

Sony will be releasing a $199.99 "entertainment pack," featuring the redesigned PSP in white, Daxter, Family Guy: Freakin' Sweet Collection, and a 1GB memory stick. There will also be a Star Wars entertainment pack (which I will buy), featuring Battlefront: Renegade Squadron (I'm assuming in lieu of Daxter) for $199.99, starting in October.

[Update: Press release after the jump, with more details, and the addition of what type of output the PSP redesign will support. Also, images from PlayStation.Blog!]

PSP(R)(Playstation(R)Portable) Becomes Slimmer and Lighter

New PSP Makes Its Debut To The Market Worldwide In September With Newly
                          Equipped Video-Out Port

TOKYO, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI)
today unveiled an enhanced design for PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) system
(PSP-2000) that has a more streamlined form factor and a video-out port which
will become available in stores from September in Japan, North America and
Europe.
   (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020701/SFM066LOGO)
While succeeding the basic functions and design philosophy of the current
PSP including a 4.3 inch wide high resolution LCD screen, overwhelmingly large
for a handheld device, new PSP is 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer
than the original version, making the all-in-one handheld entertainment system
even easier to carry around at approx.189g in weight (weight of current model
is approx.280g) and approx.18.6mm in thickness (thickness of current model is
approx.23.0 mm).
Adding a video-out port(*1) enables new PSP users to experience high
quality UMD(TM) (Universal Media Disc) Video, pictures and movies from Memory
Stick Duo and game software titles(*2) on their TVs at home.  Also, new PSP is
equipped with enhanced feature to temporarily store game data from UMD,
reducing load time during game play(*3).  Moreover, the ability to charge the
unit through PLAYSTATION(R)3 or PC via USB cable during data transfer is newly
equipped(*4), further positioning PSP as a true handheld device.
A new PSP comes in three basic colors of "Piano Black", "Ceramic White",
and "Ice Silver" to meet a variety of lifestyle and preferences for all
ages(*5).
During the two and a half years since the launch of PSP in December, 2004
strong support from users worldwide as well as an abundance of exciting
software titles from publishers around the world have resulted in PSP
achieving cumulative shipment of 25 million units for the hardware and 100
million units for software titles worldwide by March, 2007.  The expansion of
the PSP platform is being boosted worldwide along with its exciting lineup of
software titles as well as the introduction of color variations.
SCEI will continue to further expand the PSP platform and create a new
world of computer entertainment with innovative and exciting new titles and a
new PSP.

(*1) Video output cables (AV cable/S VIDEO cable/D Terminal AV
cable/Component AV cable) are sold separately.  Product lineup may
        differ by country/region.
(*2) Progressive TV and PSP specific cable (D Terminal AV cable or
Component AV cable) are necessary to output game software titles for
        PSP.
(*3) Effect of this feature varies depending on software titles.
(*4) PSP needs to be put in "USB Connection" mode.
(*5) Color variations may differ by country/region.

Whatever happened to the "Sidekick-Style" redesign they were talking about a while back? That would have been more capable of outselling the DS, don't you think?

That sounds neat. When's the software coming?

You know, something that isn't a PS2 port?

TV output is actually pretty awesome. It explains those 1920x1080 Chains of Olympus and WipEout Pulse screens.

Daxter isn't a port. Not even close to a port. Not much of anything on the PSP is a port, and I still don't know where people get these ideas. :/

But on topic. Lighter? Thinner? Goddamn. It's thin enough already that making it even thinner would be hell. Mine's only alright with that MGS:PO armor stuff.

@dvddesign - When is the last time you checked it's library? There is a decent amount of good original software either out or coming out for it, along with some ports/remakes you actually would want to see (Disgaea, FFT).

Assuming the custom firmware keeps up to date with this, it'll be pretty sweet. You can play Cave Story on it now y'know =D.

It's almost enough to make me want one this holiday season.

However, there's too many great games coming out on both the DS, 360, and Wii for me to even be able to afford it. Hopefully 2008 will be Sony's year for me.

Also, a white PSP is as much a ripoff of the PSP as the black DS is of the PSP.

What Nintendo does, no one cares.

was anyone else slightly suprised by the price? i mean a game, a umd disc of family guy[granted only 5 episodes, but they are the unedited episodes] no less, plus a 1 gig card all for $30 more than just the psp is right now.

makes me happy. i can easily fit something like that into a quick buy around thanksgiving-christmas. looks like i'm going to be buying a third psp. [: now if it only came in pink.... i would buy one release date. [:

one question i forgot about till now, will my current psp's do video out with the cable needed and maybe a firmware update? or is the new psp the only thing capable of it?

didn't dark alex quit, but some is working to keep up the progress? i'm sure this thing will ship with some super tight security but i don't care as i'll just buy a new one and use it for regular updates and such.

Where's my second analog stick!?

Doesn't really seem much point to update if you own one, unless this turns out really sleek I mean DS lite>DS sleek....

+ the fact it'll be difficult to downgrade as I'm sure they've put added countermeasures in this new version.

Adding an analog stick at this point would be a mistake similar in magnitude to creating dual SKUs for the PS3. Storage capacity is one thing, that's pretty minor. Controller input? Huge.

Fracturing your user base and introducing incompatibility with future games is a really bad idea, and I'm glad they managed to avoid making that mistake.

That's it. I want a PSP.

I've been teetering every so slightly on the fence ever since Daxter, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Metal Gear Solid were released on the handheld.

But this tears it. I need my Sony handheld.

I mean, seriously. A game and a Family Guy UMD for only about 30 more bucks? And video output?! FINALLY a reason to buy UMD movies.

Sony, you should have done this AGES ago.

But you have to admit that Aequitas is right. Adding a second analog nub would only alienate those who purchased the previous version of the PSP. If you're looking for another nub, you'd better wait for the PSP2.
