This is the question I've been seeing all over forums and throughout my Bloglines account. I've seen fanboys scream one way or another. After a while, the mindless screaming can be irritating, but it's always a fun debate.
So, between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, who do you think won? Well, thanks to the community blogs, we can tell what you're thinking! Just to start off, imbeta's blog had quite a few of us on the staff laughing, so I figured y'all might want to see it too.
Alright, let's get down to business, since this is the Internet and all.
Let's start with Microsoft's E3 press conference. From what we saw, Microsoft really didn't bring much to the table. Sure, we saw footage of what the Halo movie would be like if it existed, along with some impressive stats on the 360. We also got to see Peter Moore play guitar, as well as a Halo edition of the 360.
There were rumors abounding of Microsoft announcing a price drop for the 360, though, and that's one of the things that would have been a kick in the nuts to Sony's big announcement. That didn't happen, although I personally didn't expect it. As it is, the improved processors aren't even rolling off production lines yet, and it'd be a bit premature to announce it now. It'll most likely happen at X07, or sometime in between.
Microsoft definitely doesn't come out on top, by the simple fact that they had nothing to gain. Like their stats said, they had a huge install base over the PS3, their closest competition, technologically. The Wii is their competition in the casual games market, which they've had some steady increases in, but really couldn't make any ground-breaking announcements over.
Oh, a friend of mine sent me this comment from Kotaku's debate about the same thing:
Microsoft didn't really have any new announcements. You know, except for the one about all the games they showcased (minus one) being released this year. Sony showed the games, but would anyone like to count how many times 'blu-ray' or 'cell processor' was said? Don't kid yourselves - they're still trying to sell the hardware. Jump back to the Haze video, I'm still trying to figure out what the game is actually about. Seriously, Microsoft put on the best show. Entertaining and fun. Wii Fit was just a total joke. No thx, non-games.
Wow. Let's just move on.
Next, there's Nintendo. What we've heard from them is as follows: we've got EA Sports games online, Resident Evil 5 and Medal of Honor on the Wii, a new Wii channel, and Wii Fit. The thing is, the press conference had me going everywhere from jumping for joy (Destructoid appearing on-screen) to yelling at the computer (Wii Fit).
Let's go with the good first. I'm glad to see that things like Resident Evil 5 and Medal of Honor are proudly being displayed by Nintendo -- it certainly does work towards keeping that kiddy image away, especially when you don't wait until the end of the system's life to introduce the games. Oh, and the fact that they didn't announce a price drop, either, made me rather happy. Now I don't need to carry Alex around on my back for a week.
What disappointed me, though, was that there's still a lack of third-party support. We're still getting the same things over and over. The cancellation of Project H.A.M.M.E.R. was crushing for me, because I really wanted to see Nintendo bring out a new IP. Third-party exclusives for the Wii that aren't just mini-games (sorry, Rayman), is something that the console desparately needs. We need some RPGs or other long games (not just long-winded ones).
So, what does Nintendo pursue even harder? The casual market. I can understand this -- they've managed to break through into it, and are the definitive spearhead for it. Microsoft is a more distant second, getting mention in the Wall Street Journal and other tech-heavy mainstream publications. Nintendo needs to keep up its steam and sell as much software as possible, so that casual buyers will feel like they've made a good investment in buying their Wii.
The thing that pissed me off about Wii Fit wasn't so much the fact that it was announced (I'll probably get it just to try it out), but more so how Nintendo announced it. They teased us with a "big announcement," to which all of those present thought it would be something for the hardcore gamers. Yet Nintendo went ahead and announced something for the casual market, unable to pander to the crowd that was sitting right in front of them. It's just about choosing when to say things, Nintendo.
I think that right after their conference, I was really pissed. bethecoffeebean, in his community blog, summed up my feelings the best at that point:
Really I'm gonna be honest and just say that most of the presentation was Nintendo patting itself on the back and showing how theyr'e gonna widen their scope even more dragging in even more casual gamers, while apparently alienating Hardcore Gamers who bought their console to play videogames, and not get in shape or lower their brain age.
Finally, there's Sony. I've had a bit of a soft spot for them in my heart all my life, so take my praise of them with a grain of salt, I guess. Coming into E3, Sony was really down. Ron said so himself that he was worried Sony had gone too far down the road and might not make it out of all this unscathed.
Well, the good news started with the leaked $100 price drop announcement. From there, Sony was lucky to keep its closeness to the Elite's price point, for reasons that I mentioned before. Now, at the conference, they've given a reason for us who have been on the fence about the PSP a reason to buy it -- the announcement of the PSP redesign and all its goodies. If Sony can manage to meet its slightly outlandish claim of 11 million units sold for the PS3 this year, along with selling a ton of the new PSPs right around Christmas time (it'll be on my list), then they'll be well on their way to recouping all those R&D losses.
Sony showed us everything that we wanted to see, mainly because they know how to run the show right. We got the Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2 trailers, which excited all of us who are hardcore action players, along with Folklore, which interested most of the RPG players. Finally, we've got the announcements of all the additional titles coming to Sony, including their 15 first-party games, and a bunch of exclusives, which they've been in desperate need of.
The only thing that I can knock them for is the fact that there's still nothing coming out for the PS3 right now that is worthwhile. I mean, let's say I get a PS3 at the end of the month. So, I'll pick up Resistance: Fall of Man and Virtua Fighter 5. Now what? Well, I sit around and watch Talladega Nights until the fall, it seems. That, or play me some Warhawk beta. We need Home to be released ASAP, Sony.
So, am I just blowing smoke out my ass, or is this a fair assessment of things?
Nintendo did a 'nintendo showing' with lots of great stuff coming. I finally feel a bit positive about the Wii
Microsoft was just sad and plain. But they aren't going anywhere either.
In all, I feel that sony Won. They're the comeback kids this time.
wait let me play Moore's crickets!
Moore: and now, I PRESENT TO YOU!!! ANOTHER 4th! NEW HALOES EDITION XBOX 360!!!!!!111!!!one.
*cricket* *cricket*
... ... whoo... ... ...
Moore: YES THANK YOU!!!1!
Fair enough, but if you want to unveil Disney HD movies, Scene-it, katamari and a pinata party game...well maybe do it during The View.
I guess since the event is more about the media now, Microsoft had to push the shit that they want the mass media to report on. Hardcore gamers who tune in for megatonz got nothing. That is what X07 is for, we better see Banjo, Alan Wake, Wolfenstein 360, and Fable 2 to name a few.
Mass Effect looked better than anything at the show, Mario Galaxy looks nice. Killzone is pretty over-rated, the graphics are good, but it looks like tight quarters for the most part...Do ya think Doom 3 would have looked as good if it was as open and epic as Half-Life 2 or Halo 3?
I think Halo looked fine, but it fucking better have online co-op, and if it does why didn't they announce it? Killzone will NOT have online co-op with those type of graphics, guaranteed.
wii fit looks like it would be fun for 1-2 weeks. just like any diet or exercise plan.
i WANT sony to be successful. and this holiday will be a turning point.
I think Tecmo did the right thing keeping themselves away from this thing. I wanted to see ninja gaiden 2 but oh well... looks like Tokyo Game Show is my new utopic fantasy.
Best game shown out of all three is Phantom Hourglass.
PSP redesign sucks. Still poor form factor, still just one terrible nipple, no built in memory.
Don't get me wrong - Home looks cool, Little Big Planet looks great as always, the weird black-and-white Escher-style game looks really interested. I'm excited about some of the remakes (FFT especially). But those few things are the only real exclusives Sony has that would make me play PS3. After Gears, and with Halo coming, I don't need any more FPS in my life.
Nintendo needs to get their shit together, because they had some great stuff to show but their presentation blew. Mario Kart Wii, release dates for the big three, playable Mario Galaxy making people cry, Wii Fit, indie development, proper online.. there's so much interesting Wii stuff going on, but they didn't get me excited about any of it. Reggie is a horrible presenter (even worse than the rest of them), and I'm sick of people telling me that "anyone can pick up the Wii and compete."
I don't want an endless stream of minigames and casual pick-up-and-play shit, I want some substance. Which they have coming, but they refuse to highlight. How about a decent RPG? The next Zelda? Some more Smash Bros tidbits? Some better info and footage of Mario Kart Wii (fuck your plastic steering wheel) - anything, guys. Throw me a bone.
I think the third-party non-exclusive stuff got me the most excited. Rock Band looks insane. Assassin's Creed made me shit myself. I was hoping for some details on Skate.
I don't know who won. As far as exclusives go?
Sony wins presentation by a longshot.
Nintendo wins games by a hair.
Phil Harrison and Jack Tretton swallowing swords and breathing fire would have been far more interesting making me sell a kidney and buy the PS3 and RFoM... and saving the rest for about a year to buy a handful of titles.
Some parts were so ridiculously stupid that they were funny. Am I the only one who thought the Tretton Home avatar came across as creepy?
Microsoft kicked the shit out of Sony. Nintendo is kind of doing their own thing, so it's a little hard to compare the Wii to the 360 or PS3 (still, they held their own).
*hides from rabid fanboys*
Killzone 2 suprised me in a good way.
And that Vamp and Raiden fight was pretty awesome.
Also interested in that Infamous game.
Ill give it to them, Killzone looks pretty cool, but honestly, any better then gears? And as far as MGS, thats not SONY making that game, its Konami, so props to them. Cant wait to see u on the MicroSide.
And poor nintendo, their in a whole different league it seems. Not even really caring about the old school fans, and dealing with the hear and now thing. I love nintendo, always will. But I just have a gut feeling that unless they get some new higher ups in the company, youll see them ending up like sega. Hell the only reason they HAVENT yet is because they have a bigger piggy bank.
Owell, my two cents!
Nice.....
1. Sony showed games. Games that appealed to the "hardcore." (guh, when did that get coined?)
2. Nintendo had its moments, but it was almost unrecognizable in some portions. There was an aire of arrogance, I barely caught sight of Mario and the gang, and all I could do to tell that this was Nintendo was look at the logo. Of course, for this E3, it wasn't about the conference for Nintendo: it was about the hands-on time.
3. Microsoft... Well, they had Halo. If you're a Halo die hard, you can die happy knowing Microsoft will supply the Halo-branded coffin.
Yea, that's completely logical considering everything Nintendo has touched for the past year prints money.
1. microsoft pimped what they have NOW and what they will have by the end of the year. and don't kid yourselves, this definitely is one of the most impressive looking holiday lineups evar.
2. wii mostly pimped they're casual sector and announced wii fit. THAT'S MINUS TEN POINTS RIGHT THERE!! but, mario kart/galaxy, metroid prime, res evil 5... awesome.
3. sony pimped the hardware again and showed a bunch more stuff that won't be out till godknows/when/08? but they had haze, ut semi exclusivity... cool. and i'll be the first to say that the killzone 2 stuff has phenomenal graphics, kudos.
i don't think there's a clear winner here. clearly they were all aiming at different things.
Microsoft showed way more than just Halo and was playing the realist. "IF you want Halo and GTA and Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon and Katamari and Call of Duty 4 and Splinter Cell and Bioshock and Eternal Sonata and Ace Combat and Disney movies, you can have them within 3 months, and only on Xbox 360"
How is that a terrible showing? Tokyo Game Show and X07 are around the corner and we should see a bunch of game that didn't even get mentioned like Ninja Gaiden 2, Wolfenstein, Gears 2, Silent Hill, and maybe some Metal Gear and Final Fantasy.
I think Sony had a good showing of the future, but Xbox has a far better library and quite a few more 3rd party exclusives, not to mention Microsoft Games Studios funded games (Halo/Gears/Forza/PGR/Viva Pinata/Mass Effect/Blue Dragon/Lost Odyssey/Crackdown).
But I agree with the whole assesment, Sony won. I won't be picking up a PS3, because while the exclusives look nice, they don't excite me as much as the 6 or so titles I can get on the 360 this holiday for cheaper.
Sony had MGS4, hurray. It was some cool stuff. Then they had Killzone 2. It looks neat. Ok, so that is two games. And guess what, only one of them is exclusive. Everything else was the same footage of the games that we have seen before that are multiplatform.
So lets look at Microsoft. I will admit that they showed plenty of stuff that wasn't exclusive. But they had NEW footage of CoD4, they had a live demo of Assassin's Creed. It was a bit glitchy, but it was NEW content.
They showed new footage of Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey. They had Peter Moore playing Rock Band with the developers. They announced live during the conference that you could go and download Golden Axe and Sonic. They announced new videos to be available for dl with content from Disney.
Why would Sony focus so much on non exclusive games when they could really show off Haze, Heavnely Sword, and Ratchet and Clank? They showed that new trailer of HAZE and that was cool but they need to start showing the game off. And for crying out loud, they had a wookie come on stage. Jack Tretton is just patronizing us with that, it was terriblem
If you've ever watched a company's keynote at a trade show, you know that at least the first 1/4 of the presentation is bragging about their past achievements. Sony's keynote was more exciting for more of us at home, because (let's face it) they don't have that much to brag about this year. So they went straight to the "this is what we're going to do next" section (read: sweet, sweet gamer candy).
I thought Microsoft had a decent conference, but nothing of any real excitement was revealed. "Scene It"? "Naruto"? "Viva Pinata"? Thanks, but no thanks. The Xbox Live Arcade montage was pretty good, some interesting entries in there. Overall, I'm still positive on Microsoft, but I really wanted to see some new stuff.
Sony had at least one surprise, sort of: a new PSP. Not much of a redesign actually. I still won't buy one, but it's getting better. The PlayStation 3 looks like to be getting some decent games finally, but not until later in the year. I think Sony did fairly well, but we need more time to tell if everything pans out well for them.
I dunno, Nintendo was the worst, by far. It's a toss up between Sony and Microsoft, and I don't care enough to choose a winner. I own an Xbox 360, and I know what games I want for that platform. I don't know what games I want for a PlayStation 3 should I buy one, so I guess I'll go with Microsoft for best press conference of E3. It's clear what their heavy hitter titles are.
Microsoft came and did their thing, but for the great majority of the show - they didn't really show or do anything new other than give people some chuckles. After the majority of the announcements, you would primarily hear only the speaker clapping and no one else cheering or clapping at all. The entire place seemed dead at what Microsoft was bringing to the table. They didn't thrill the attendee's, and they didn't thrill me.. What it seemed like was that they were so comfortable and confident of their newlyfound position at the top of the battle that they figured they would show us nothing new.
Now, many people argued "But Microsoft was only covering this year for the most part".. And yes, that was a big problem. But I came about to wondering as I was watching it.. "These ARE the big titles that I have been hearing about.. What could they possibly offer in 08?" Regarding future designs on games, there seems to be a void.
Nintendo came in. They did their thing. They gave a decent show at the very least.
Sony came in and really hit people with new footage and new things. New unveilings that people actually gave a damn about. And hype on games that people would actually like. Not only that, but they showed things that would be coming this year, and the following year in one single go. Their presentation and ability to reach up from the ground whilst Microsoft is doing a Captain Morgan on em really showed that they are verily much in the game.
Microsoft would have come out on top - but I feel as though they dropped by ball by doing nothing new and showing us all the majority of trailers that have been out since last month and the month before that.. Nintendo gained a little bit more momentum from that and will likely bypass the 360 on consoles sold in less than 15 weeks.. Sony gained a truckload of running distance while Microsoft seemed to be laying on the floor.
Zero Iscariot (can I call you Z Iscizzle or... Zero, or... Iscariot... troublesome handle, there), I'm well aware that Microsoft did indeed show games other than "da halos." I'm just finding it hard to resist jumping on the bandwagon here. It's just so darn fun. To be fair, I am fairly interested in a number of the 360 titles showcased; but everyone knows E3 is about dropping megatons the size of Iwata's wallet.
...There had to be something like that...
Wait, Nintendo had Bee Mario. How many E3s does that win, sir?
I love that Bee Mario. Cute as hell.
How did this one slip past me? Can we get a clarifier on this one?
