We all just got out of the Nintendo press conference with some decidedly mixed reviews. Personally, I loved it. Granted, appealing to my grandmother doesn't really benefit me in the long run, but I am a huge fan of what Nintendo is doing. Mixing up this crazy industry of ours is exciting and refreshing, to say the least.
Feelings aside, though, I think most everyone can agree that the new footage of Super Mario Galaxy shown at the show was pretty unbelievable. The graphics alone are a huge step up from currently released Wii games and, most importantly, it looks like a ton of fun to play. I may have to agree with Reggie's conference statement that Galaxy really is "the true successor to Super Mario 64."
Make extra sure, though, to check out the above video at around 37 seconds. Cued it up yet? Yeah, that's right, it's Mario in a BEE SUIT! This is exciting, not only because it looks to offer some sick, gravity-defying gameplay, but witnessing Mario in an animal suit hasn't been experienced since the glory days of Super Mario Bros. 3's tanooki suit. Ah, the amazing memories.
Super Mario Galaxy was officially announced for release on November 12. I am already ridiculously giddy with anticipation.
What do you think? Doesn't this footage look great? And did you giggle like a school girl when you saw Bee Mario (for the record, I surely did)?

I am not even kidding, I am officially obsessed with Bee Mario. Is something wrong with me? Please, Nintendo, implement some more suits into this fantastic looking game! :)
The game DOES look very original and they're doing a good job with graphics and art design, but am I the only one who still can't seem to grasp how the heck this game will control?
I mean, the parts when you're running around on planets look ok if not a tad strange, control-wise, but all of the parts where Mario is flying through space or is just away from or above planets looks like a clusterfuck of controlability.
They're really going to have to fight to find a good medium between making the controls too out there and frustrating and making the controls too connect-the-dots easy.
I'm not saying they can't do it, but I DO think it's going to be damn hard to get it right.
Though Nintendo aren't about graphics this time around, Galaxy looks incredible. After seeing exactly what the Wii can do graphically, games later down the road shouldnt have an excuse for looking like ass. The potential is there, developers just need to stop being lazy. And yess, bee suit FTW
smg does look amazing. better graphics ive seen is a wii game so far and the level design looks awesome. hopefully there will be other suits than the bee suit
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. I did giggle. I giggled, clapped, and jumped up and down.
Better than Reggie's.
