You might recall a recent post from Dale "Yellow Soul" North regarding Killzone 2 (see footage above), one game in a series that has been lauded as Sony's answer for everything from Halo to global warming. Of course, in the end it's just a game, and honestly, it doesn't even look as pretty as Epic's Gears of War; a title that has been available for the Xbox 360 since man first stepped from the primordial ooze, realized how much work creating fire would be, and instead decided to call a fourteen year old a f**n***er over Xbox LIVE.

While I'm sure it will assume its place as yet another FPS on a console whose entire library consists of a single FPS, I'm still waiting for the gimmick. Perhaps in this one, we get to ride around on the back of an tortoise Advance-Grade Mechanized Tuatara, or maybe we'll have an additional button allowing us to e-mail the corpse of Stanley Kubrick screenshots from the game emblazoned with the heavily-drop-shadowed caption "Anti-War Sentiments Are For Naught In A Society Forged From Rampant Manifest Destiny! Bitch!"

If they add that last one, I'm suing ...

Yeah, that clip isn't really the most impressive in terms of graphics and gameplay. It's almost like you want us to hate Killzone 2, Nex.

I don't think that clip is indicative of the final gameplay. It looks unfinished really - too few enemies and a boring button pushing thing which is unlikely to see it to the final release.

Its all objective really, the last fps game I bought before vegas and rfom, was timesplitters 2. Personally, I'm really enjoying the stuff thats coming out at the moment, can see how everyone else is fed up tho.

Personally I thought the graphics looked lovely. Hopefully the gameplay will supercede the standard run-gun shooter definition that was the orignal.

Though it is only in early beta (or even alpha stages), I must say that I am really disappointed. Where the hell was the specular lighting?

Wow this article seems helluva biased. None the less, Killzone looks great, but too bad it isn't going to the 360, so I won't be able to play it. That helluva sucks.

The entire second half of that video was lame. Press a button, shoot, rinse, repeat. PSone style gameplay FTW!

Im hoping the person playing just didn't know what they were doing or something. Hoping the final game doesn't feature action that monotonous.

Killzone, more like thrillzone! minus the thrill, and with twice as much zone! Take that!....I literally have nothing left...there are so many goddamn fps's these days, their cumulative mediocrity is ruining me.

A single FPS? PS3 has 5 FPS.

Resistance, Rainbow Six Vegas, Call of Duty 3, FEAR, and The Darkness

Unless you were talking about exclusives, in which case one would be correct.

if this video is an early beta, or even an alpha, it think its leaps and bounds ahead of the halo beta. so what the explosions suck, keep bitching about it and they undoubtedly will be spit shined. but in all seriousness, look at this game, it is FAR above par and u can still say confidentially that it can only get better.

don't hate nex, especially if you are hating on a GENRE of games. the game with the most skeptics should not be your whipping boy, it should be the game that is selling the most and that fills out the definition of a generic fps.

personally i can't wait to get my hands on this one.

Meh the only thing that looked done was the animation for death and everything. Stop complaining its in beta/alpha, Nex is saying that this video is looking fairly underwhelming. What did it show? A guy killing 1 guy then shooting a spike while pressing a button. The video was fairly underwhelming, same with the graphics, the gameplay, everything cept the way people died looked fairly bland.

Still doesn't stop me from wanting the hell out of this game though.

Did everyone suddenly forget that the first Killzone game was complete crap? It had terrible controls, horrid graphics, and a cliched storyline that made players roll their eyes nonstop.

Now with Killzone 2 everyone seems to say it looks great and will be an amazing game. But why? That video looked about as exciting as a snail, but my money says that it was the most exciting moment in KZ 2.

That is to say if the second game is anything like the first.

Funny no one has actually commented on the bit of color pattern while jumping to the conclusion of Kilzone 2 being a better game than Halo 3...I admit I never did like Halo 2 from any angle but this trailer just had a very distinctive environment to it...the grey pallette has been done a zillion times and if anyone remembers this the original Killzone had this Monochromatic pallette cause it was grosly underpowered to handle the game which is why it shuttered so many times...Halo 3on the other hand has a variety on Environments...the more the variety the better the gameplay mechanics are..I wonder this time If The chief does another Space walk, maybe on a covenant ship...eh...

Does not look like CG trailer. That barbed wire looks terrible and the textures of the environment are shit. Gameplay also looks like shit from what I can tell. Character animations are superb. Everything else screams Killzone 1.
That CG trailer set the bar too high and I'm suprised everyone thinks Guerilla nailed it. Good dev house, average shooter.

Boring. Pushing switches over and over to shoot at a structure is less than compelling gameplay. How funny it is that people magically seem to "forget" that the original Killzone was crap; mediocre at BEST. Shinier graphics (or greyer in this case) aren't going to turn Guerilla into a AAA dev. You can polish a turd all you like, but it's still a turd.

The only thing I like is the sound design.

What I don't understand is why people keep saying that this game is alpha software and unfinished. That may be true, but this game has been in development for quite a long time. Bioshock is also still in alpha status and it looks a hell of a lot better in every regard, including animation.

* Nex: "The glut of current FPS games in ANY form is utterly lame."

Indeed. They're not terrible, but the FPS is not the right genre for a console. I'd like to see more 3rd-person strategy games that don't need so much aiming precision or button mashing. The PS3 needs more sophisticated software... and I don't mean epic games that fill up a Blu-ray disc.

"The glut of current FPS games in ANY form is utterly lame."

what about the form that's made of fucking awesome? bioshock, halo 3, orange box, ut 3, metroid prime 3, etc.

these should all prove to be great gaming experiences. fps is my favorite genre, so i'm in for a treat. i can imagine getting tired of the genre after awhile but who says you have to play them all at once? take a break with your pinatas or italians plumbers, no?

but i will say this, all three platforms are dying for more variety in their library.

The gameplay looked so rediculously bland. It looks pretty, but all he did was shoot a guy, push a few buttons, and shoot some thing else a lot until it exploded. I could find more innovation in a sports game made by EA.
Trevor McGee's Avatar

The gameplay looks bland, the game in general just looks bland, and like someone else who posted in here I have not forgotten how shitty the first KillZone was. Why is anyone suddenly expecting this to be better than anything else? It looks like shit. Oh, it graphically impressive, to bad it looks bland as shit. You know what? I hate Halo, and yeah, this probably is a better graphical achievement but that game looks better simply because it's colorful and more pleasing to the eyes.

Anyway, screw both this and Halo 3. All of the non-exclusive third part games are looking better anyway. Call of Duty 4 just flat out looks better, and the gameplay looks like it'll be great, at least the past Call of Dutys were well received so you know to expect something good from them. BioShock, again might not be a graphically impressive, but it's color scheme it more pleasing to the eye and the gameplay damn sure looks better. This game is just being over hyped and it's just sad because there are already better looking games being made: Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Heavenly Sword, Alan Wake, Lost Odyssey, etc.

It's in pre-alpha, so it can only get better than this, and it probably will. Probably.
