E3 2007: Killer Killzone 2 gameplay footage photo

Okay, so Sony did it. Killzone 2 looks wonderful. Some words were eaten when Sony rounded out their press conference at the E3 Media & Business Summit with real real-time footage from the game, and while it didn't totally meet the bar they set in 2005, it came pretty damned close - close enough to almost (almost!) reclaim some of the face that was lost a few years ago during E3. Nods of approval and "good enoughs" have made their rounds, and everyone in the gaming world seems pleased and somewhat positive.

When it comes down to it, the real gauge is going to be actual gameplay. A trailer is one thing, and even though we know that this is finally real-time footage, seeing Killzone 2 in action is what will really tell us the most about this game outside of actually playing it. Now, we have a clip of some gameplay in high-definition, and the quality seems to be on an equal level with the trailer from this year's event. Feast your eyes on what they've been working on for the past couple of years, and never mind the guy with the bad aim towards the end.

Is it just me, or is the AI incredibly dumb in this video? In any case the game is still pre-alpha, right?

Looks good. A couple more games like this and I think I'd almost have to buy a PS3.

Call of Duty 4 looks better, so this doesn't impress me much. Also, like I said before, if it plays as shitty as KillZone 1 did, then the graphics don't mean a damn thing. Good to know they included every shade of gray they could find too, heh.

idk, maybe they set it on uber easy or something for the purpose of the demo. I didn't see the guy get shot once. ALthough I have read what it is like when you do. apparently the screen goes all black and white to say you need to find cover.

Suppose we will see when the final game comes out.

(Oh and yes it looks gorgeous)

You can see that the game's still far from being finished. the AI, the crappy explosion at the end, the weird replay button pressing sequence.

looks damn promising though, i wonder what multiplayer will be like.

I gotta say, it looks pretty damn sweet... There's one thing bothering me though, the game has already been in development for around three years and this is the best stage they have to show off?

It makes me wonder if the dev team has spent the entire time working on the graphics attempting to match the unrealistic bar the '05 video set. The AI looked terrible, the level they show was a weak run and gun, and the "team" AI looked just as bad.

Comparing this to the CoD4 footage, I have to say, while KZ2 beats it in graphics, it's not by much. The KZ2 level design was kind of bland for such a sick looking game. Also, the CoD4 footage shows some very compelling game play that IMO blows away this footage.

Looks like another standard fare run and gun FPS, just with sick graphics... lets hope the actual game play ends up being as good as the graphics.

Great graphics. Yup. I see that. Enemies that get shot but don't show any signs of being hurt then randomly collapsing. Hmm. (It was just the one enemy, but still. Bullets either hurt you or they don't.)

The enemy seemed as dumb as a brick. But that doesn't surprise me. I keep reading the PS3 can't handle complicated AI.

I'll pass.

They had it on the backburner for a while after 005, when they were focusing on the PSP game.

I see lots of other things that make me happy. Yeah, the AI seems dumb, but somehow I think the "biggest multimedia project in Dutch history" will be able to work it out. This game has to be amazing and I feel Sony will put time and money into it. Their first party games this generation seem to be much higher quality lately (except Genji 2).

Geez, I played Genji 1, it was solid, but nothing spectacular. Genji 2 was sluggish to control and just bad, granted, I only played the demo.

Yes. I was wondering about this after they showed it off yesterday. I haven't heard anything about how it plays, or what sets it apart from other shooters? Do they have a design philosophy? If not, maybe they could show us a gimmick or two?

I really need to retract my statement earlier about this game looking awesome. I had only seen the web feed of the Sony conference and was blown away by the lighting and stuff.

Seeing this though, it really doesn't look like something that the year older 360 couldn't run. That video looks somewhere in between Call of Duty 2 and Gears. Not nearly as close to the CG teaser as I thought. The animations for death, reloading and navigating cover look excellent.

The gameplay looks terrible and stale otherwise. That 7 core Cell must be pushing the graphics as well because those Helghast things are dumb as shit.
And I realize that those antenna things probably have something to do with how the bad guys control the weather, but the "push the switch, fire some more shots @ antenna" was some lame PS1 shit.
I can't believe Sony fans are jerkin' their collective wad over this game. Does not live up to hype.

I'm going to have to agree with most everyone here and say that the graphics were awesome, but beyond that it was just "meh" (and I hate that word). gameplay wise, it was really generic looking. Like Quake 4 generic looking. And what the fuck was up with that 3 minutes of antennae blast/button press/repeat bullshit?

It's not done (probably far from it besides graphics), so I'll still reserve judgement. But I'm starting to think Resistance (which I have no problem with) will be a better quality FPS than this.

"Hey Killzone, you're making us look bad"

"Duh...me run duhnamic lighting thing"

"Are you even listening Killzone?"

"Mah pixels ur purdy"

"Oh fuck it, he'll never understand that graphics only make good games better..."

Well despite all the hateraid drinkers here, this game looks pretty darn sweet to me. I think we ALL knew that what was shown 2 yrs ago was not actual in game (motorstorm....come'on) but this looks very good graphical wise.

And it sure looks to me like they react when they get shot, flopping around and what not as they get hit.

Also, has anyone played any war style game besides Halo that incorporates every color of the rainbow? Cause I havn't

Let's just wait until it actually comes out guys before making any criticizing remarks. I have to agree though, the gameplay looks like KZ1 and hasn't seemed to add any new features. The game was fun (though sluggish -_-), so let's hope they bring some new stuff to the table. Still, it'll be awhile before I get a PS3.

@Mix I'm a "hateraid drinker" because I'm reserved about the game play? Since when did graphics dictate playability and fun? Beyond a doubt the game is a pretty as can be, but I'd like ONE reason this game is "next-gen" OTHER than the graphics, we didn't even see any scripted events in this "demo" stage (besides flying in with the drop ship). Half-life wasn't a huge leap in graphics over the other FPSs out at the time, but it's innovative story-line and scripted events were new and blew everyone away. Making it one of the top-rated and most played FPSs of all time.

Look at CoD4, it's introduced to the series (and FPSs in general so far): "realistic" Gilli suits, slow movement in shadows to avoid detection (due to Gilli suit), a partner that identifies threats and gives real advice in situations (also used realistic hand commands if you watch), killing enemies as they face away from each other so they don't notice (not all that new to FPSs, but new to CoD), going prone to avoid chopper detection, and ended with a really cool sweep of enemy troops honing in on you and your partner. This was all in one 3min clip. (Also we previously saw REAL FULL TIME BULLET PENETRATION! Drool...)

What did we see in the Killzone 2 clip that pushed the game play itself? I don't count hitting a switch and blowing up the thing when it opens new and inventive... There was nothing new... just pretty graphics. We all know the PS3 has the ability to make gorgeous graphics ($600 anyone?), what I'd like to see is an innovative change in game play made possible by this monster machine.

Until we see something other than pretty looks, I'll hold back my judgment, but so far it looks standard fare FPS, and I don't know about everyone else, but I've had my fill of standard run and gun FPS's.

I've got to admit, this has me excited to see what Sony's gonna do in the near future. The recent PS3 price drop has me thinking of picking one up, and this really made me think about it even more.

But yeah, the AI didn't seem to be too great just yet, but we'll see how it ends up when the full game comes out.

If you want to get a cheaper ps3 you better hurry, Brian Crecente's hair palace is reporting a sony ceo said once the 60g on the market are sold out (supposedly by the end of the month) that 60 gig will be phased out and the 80 gig for $599 will be the only choice. Shortest price cut ever.

Does the gunfire seem weird to anyone else? It seems inacurate or slow

I think that the character motion was very nice indeed, and an explosion or two was pretty sweet, but overall, I did not really think this looked that great.
When they were flying into the city, you could tell all the processing was going into the characters and the ship they were on, the city was looking quite flat at that point. Also, what's up with the million-shades-of-grey color palette they have going on?

Seriously, fucking Bioshock looks much better than this, from gameplay (fo shizzle) to graphics.

Oh yeah, I fucking hate the Playstation!

I'm glad that everyone just accepts the fact that they fucking bullshitted everyone with a pre-rendered video and fucking passed it for in-game. thats enough for me to not give a fuck about this game at all. That and how fucking TERRIBLE killzone 1 is. You assbags can make fun of halo all you want, but halo 2 is hundreds of times better than killzone, and halo 2 sucked.

Thirst the haterade! If this game were on the 360, you'd all be singing the praises and you know it. I guess "uninspired FPS" titles are only good if they're sporting a color palette that makes My Little Pony look like Geli Korzhev's, Before a Long Journey

Sony made a fantastic showing this year and met the bar they set. Yes, yes, I know, this isn't the typical Sony bashing, it's something different, something positive. It might be hard at first, but I'm sure you'll be able to cope with it.

Considering this is probably Sony's attempt at a halo killer(even if the developers don't mean it...) it seems to have generic gameplay.
Graphics look good though, and its not bad. But considering Games like Bioshock look pretty AND have interesting ideas... that's just not going to cut it.

Hopefully it will be fun.
I'm looking forward to Haze more than this... even though I has no PS3.

@ frygar

Actually, if it were coming to the 360, I'd be just as unimpressed, maybe slightly less since it's supposed to be the "inferior" machine. But, anyway, why should I can about this generic shooter? Graphically it's good but ultimately ruined by being damn near black and white, and gameplay looks boring and generic as hell. Why should I care about this game? Call of Duty 4 look much better in my opinion, and the gameplay is far more interesting. This is a game that comes out on both consoles, so on either one if KillZone 2 came out for both consoles I completely ignore it and just get Call of Duty 4. Also, BioShock as already stated, even if it doesn't look as good, at least it looks like it has some great gameplay mechanics and the water effects are still some of the best I've seen to date, though that still really doesn't matter since gameplay means the most.

It's a 2:35 trailer, and a nearly a full 1:00 of it is shooting at a tower, pressing a button to re-open the tower, then shooting it again. But now I can do it in full grayscale and have motion blur eclipse all the cool details of my weapons. How riveting.

Is it just me, or did anybody else notice the fact that the guy in the demo had to use almost the entirety of the 40 rounds in his clip at the beginning (judging from the hud) to kill two guys? Including a couple headshots? Are the controls so imprecise and the enemies so durable? I mean the player seemed to have had a couple problems aiming at a HUGE STATIONARY TARGET. Looks like one button is bound to picking up weapons, melee, and activating things to boot, since the guy even has trouble fiddling with the 'open tower' button.

Luckily all this can be fixed before release.

Please. For the love of gawd. Fix it before release.
