Ok, we get it. Halo 3 has a high probability of being awesome. Halo gameplay aside (I'm not opening that can of Shai Hulud), fans and haters alike have to agree that the Haloverse is one of the most immersive and rich in the genre. Think of it as the Harry Potter or Pokémon of FPS: the content may be derivative, but the narrative and the history are so well designed that players can't help but get sucked in. Look at the success of Red vs. Blue -- even people who aren't necessarily fans of Halo love it (like me).

Microsoft and Bungie know that they have an immersive world rich with financial milk, and Halo Wars, at a glance, seems like a good chance to suckle at its teat. And why not? People are going to snap up any chance they get to ruthelessly slaughter the Covenant.

But if the above gameplay footage is anything to go by, Halo Wars looks like it could shape into a very solid real-time strategy game. The video shows the standard trappings of RTS: lots of units and explosions. According to Dean Takahashi over at Mercury News, the game won't be out this year. Control up to 20 units via a circular, iPod-style menu (Secret of Mana menus? Be still my palpitating heart!). Warthogs still have the same physics, fishtailing and jumping crevasses with ease. Resources are brought from a mothership down to the battle field, a mothership that can also orchestrate "orbital bombardments."

The RTS genre has a checkered history on the console, but Halo Wars looks to have as good a chance of any at providing solid gameplay, with an immersive universe to boot. At the very least, it'll keep you occupied while you wait on Starcraft II.

The fact that this is only coming to the 360 is not only stupid, but it pisses me off because then I can't play it. D:

The fact that it's only coming to 360 is only stupid to you because you don't own one. That doesn't mean it's going to BE stupid.

I love the Halo universe despite it being derivative. This is mainly due to Eric Nylund rather than anything Bungie has done though. I'd play this game if I liked micromanaging games as opposed to playing them (not a fan of RTS if you didnt notice)

Ditto Magesx! Who are they kidding? RTS = PC first and foremost. Someone didn't do their homework over at Bungie/MS when they decided this.

The framerate, it BURNS! I'm sure that'll be fixed though. Yeah, I would rather play it on my PC as well. The fact that it is only on 360 doesn't bother me though. As long as I can play it, heh.

Eric Nylund is a horrible writer. His novels are passable due to the interesting subject matter alone, but his ability to describe a scene and write out action are absolutely pitiful.

Zanch, the only reason I thought it would be stupid in the first place was because RTS are more made for PCs, y'know, with the whole mouse and keyboard and whatnot.

Liar. Everybody knows Starcraft and Command & Conquer on N64 sold 1251723 more units than it's PC counterpart.

But yes, I don't understand why it wasn't developed for PC.

Well, considering Halo has been moved to PC from the XBOX I think we can see a possibility of the same thing with H.W. here. I'd hope so though because I honestly would much rather like to play it on PC.

What the fuck? Eric Nylund's Halo novels were excellent. They added much-needed depth and richness to the Halo universe. I loved them, personally. They weren't Tolkien by any means, but they were good. Who gives a shit if they were "derivative"? What the hell isn't, these days? So long as it's enjoyable, that's all I care about.

And yeah, an RTS is easier on the PC, but I'd rather keep the Halo content primarily on the Xbox. It makes it easier, instead of having to worry about whether or not I'm going to be able to play it or not.

I really don't understand what people like about the Halo story or it's universe. The game is ok, but everything about it from the design of Master Chief (which I liked more the first time I saw it on Robotech in the 1980's) to the story is unoriginal.

FPS is not a type of story, so the comparison to Harry Potter doesn't work.

And I also don't understand the appeal of Harry Potter either.

Also, cocks.

I hate to say this but, sometimes, originality is overrated. *gives self 40 lashes* But seriously, just because something has been done before, it doesn't mean that it automatically sucks. At this point in human history, there just isn't that much in the way of original content, like it or not. (I'm not saying that can't change, but let's be honest here.) And, honestly, I don't see where Halo's mythos has been done before. Maybe that makes me an uncultured swine, but Halo is mostly new to me, and I love it because it stirs my imagination and makes my boy-parts go tingly. And that's exactly what science fiction should do. Harry Potter does suck, though. ;)

And electro speaks sense, once again. I'm going to place my faith in... whoever the fuck is making this game. Bungie properties have yet to steer me too far wrong.

You know, if M$ really wanted to sell Vista, they could actually try putting some decent games on it. Like say, Halo Wars and Halo 3. What a bunch of morons.
