E3 2007: Halo 3 campaign trailer and screens put nightmares of Halo 2 to rest

1:20 AM on 07.11.2007, William Haley 36 comments

     E3

So, this actually looks good. Even the most diehard of Halo fanboys had to admit the multiplayer was graphically underwhelming and the sneak peak at the single player was not so hot either. Holding on to all hope, they insisted things would get better, and for once... they were right.

I will admit, Halo 2 really derailed my love and devotion for the series, so I was a devout non-believe of part 3. Until now, that is. It looks quite good, and seems like theres going to be plenty of wild, diverse action that truly is reminiscent of the spirit of the original. It's no Gears of War or Bioshock aesthetically speaking, but that's not going to stop it from being as fun as it looks. I am always the first to criticize a game for not being all it could be, but on the odd occasion a company actually delivers, I certainly don't mind being proven wrong. Well-played Bungie, well-played...

There weren't any especially showstopping announcements like MGS4 or even a price drop, but the lineup of gamings coming out this year truly is phenomenal.

Microsoft is ahead and it's because of Xbox Live and great games, so that's all they really need to focus on. Why fix what's not broken?

I think I might be the only one in the world that is completely in love with the Halo story now, but I don't care. Years from now, when all modern graphics are out dated and there are games with better functionality and more novel multiplayer experiences, long after the Gears of Wars and Bioshocks have lost their visual appeal, this series will be remembered for it's story and presentation. If nothing else, the people at Bungie know how to tell a tale.

RaspberryJowls, I love the Halo story also. At this point, though, I don't really think I can muster up much excitement for the game. Once it's in my hands and I'm playing it, then I'll get really excited. Until then, there's not much Bungie can reveal that would give me a fanboy boner, right now. (Online co-op would be one of those things.)

While the graphics are good, considering the scale, enemy encounters and gameplay, it left me thinking that it better be online co-op campaign for the graphics to be just "good"...

Meh, I hated both Halo 1 and Halo 2, both were boring and bland to me, so this game holds no value to me. But, I suppose it's good to see that it doesn't look as horrible as the multi-player demo they gave people. I was starting to think this game would just end up looking like Halo 2 Vista.

I didn't even like the first Halo that much. The second I bought just because everybody with an Xbox on planet Earth plays it multiplayer. This one, though. I'm actually filled with anticipation. The 360's outlook just gets better and better.

I don't care what anyone says, I will never hate Halo...ever...and I'm nowhere near some of the fandom my friends show off. This looks awesome, and if I had a 360, I'd already have it reserved.

It looks... well it looks like Halo. With more shaders. Which I guess is what it's supposed to be.

I'm really digging the remixed up theme music though, that was sick.

From someone who disliked halo from the day it was first released on the Xbox, this trailer makes it look like fun.

Um... correct me if I'm wrong, but if a sequel already made you lose your love for a franchise, I don't see it as being a good franchise. IMO, halo sucks. It's a shitty version of age old games for the PC with virtually nothing new. Granted, it's nice, pretty, and fairly new for the console generation, but FPSs will always be home on a PC (just like RTSs and RPGs). But 2 games being released, 1st was meh, 2nd was apparently hated by many, 3 better blow everyone out of the water for the Halo franchise to be considered worth saving for round 4.

Imagine if people had said that Final Fantasy II turned them off to the FF franchise? Hell, it's not even a franchise at that point, it's just an IP.

In short, between PC FPSers hating on Halo, the flop of Halo II, and the fueled debate over PS3vs360 graphics, Halo has a LOT of hurtles to overcome, and it doesn't look like they're living up to par.

To be honest, I couldn't care less about the graphics. They are nice, but the two things I want from this game are fun and the story. From the trailer, it looks like the first thing will be delivered.
As for the story, after playing through both games and reading all four books Bungie had better not ruin this for me. I do not think they will, seeing as their old games (Marathon and the like) stories still fascinate people today, but I will wait until I play the game to pass judgement.

1) For those who do not like Halo: Posting that fact in every post about Halo grew tiresome long ago. Please just stop. We know. And if you're going to continue, at least expand on your arguments rather than posting the same thing over and over. I'm beginning to think you just copy and paste your comments.

2) Bungie has created such a fantastically detailed background universe for their game, and this trailer has given me hope that it will finally show through in the game. rather than having to delve into the novels and other media.

3) Halo has become what it is today because of its immense community and an online multiplayer system that easily outmatched (and probably still outmatches) anything on consoles. This provides players with a fun, exciting gaming experience where no matter what time they go on, they can play with thousands of people from all over the world.

4) I need to clean up the semen that went everywhere. Excuse me.

Halo was the first game to bring vehicle based combat into a FPS. It completely changed the whole concept of how multiplayer AND singleplayer was played, and also the map design for the developers. Maps suddenly became HUGE and it wasn't a problem. Also, with halo 2, it was the first game to do xbox live multiplayer RIGHT. So much fun to be had on halo 2. I think i played it once for 20 hours straight. I don't know why there are so many halo haters anymore, but most of you're points are, well, pointless.

Anyway about the trailer, I need to go get tissues.

Sorry HawtPwkitHero, but Halo was NOT the first game with vehicles, nor the first game with HUGE maps. Hell, if you come down to it, Halo is a HUGE rip off of the artistic direction of Tribes. Also, it was 2 years AFTER Xbox live came out. Sorry, but your info is all wrong.

@DeusPayne

In fact, when Halo was in development for the PC (shortly after its transition from a Mac-based, sci-fi version of Myth and about a year before it went to the Xbox), it was aimed squarely at the Tribes set. As far as ripping off the artistic direction, I find that connection dubious at best, but the mechanical structure of the game does have a lot of similarities.

That being said, I don't think any of that stopped Halo from being one of the most polished and well-produced games in recent memory. I've always felt that was Bungie's strength. As much as everyone loves to rant about the series in vague, general language in an attempt to sidestep the considerable effort of conjuring quantifiable evidence for one's opinions, I think it would be hard to argue with its finely-tuned pacing (though the Library would be the exception there). Things are revealed precisely when they need to be, and the player's progression through the game is directed just as much by "what's gonna happen next?" as by the simple mission objectives. It's hard for me to talk about Halo 2 because it wasn't quite as smooth a ride, but there's a lot of context and backstory to the world that makes everything feel coherent, and as far as I'm concerned, that's priority #1 for a game that wants to be remembered.

Did someone replace the Purple Drank with Haterade around here?

i guess my expectations are just too high. come on bungie, back up that sickening elitist attitude of yours with next gen gameplay since you are barely harnessing next gen graphics. and please . . . kill off the arbitor in the first level.

K, I am stoked now I wanna play with a gatling gun!!!! Sadly, I don't do consoles anymore, so I will have to wait for them to butcher it for the PC before I get to play it.

I have a feeling one player will be MC and one Arbiter in co-op...considering a the screen of him and MC walking right next to each other with turrets in hand. Unless you have him along as a much stronger AI in some missions.

@LordRegulus: Once again, well-said. I'm not a guy who usually enjoys FPSes. They usually get on my nerves and frustrate me. Halo, however, was the first one that was a delight for me to play. It plays smoothly, it's intuitive, it's interesting, it's fun. And honestly, I don't think Halo 2 is all that bad. It's certainly not as immersive and accessible as Halo 1, but it did improve on some things and did have some memorable levels, such as the earth missions and Delta Halo. And certainly, Halo 2 is unrivaled in its online-play system. It's hard to play any other games online, once you're used to the smoothness of the lobby and matchmaking system. And what I love the most about Halo is the immersive, well-written mythos behind it.

On a related note, I don't understand the hatred directed at the Arbiter. True, I'd rather play as the Chief, and most of the Arbiter's levels were on the crappy side, but I love the character. The shamed Covenant commander whose entire fleet was defeated by one human - the Chief - becomes the Prophets' bitch and, subsequently, discovers that they're really full of shit. Plus, he's a badass. What's not to like? I look forward to seeing the interaction between him and Master Chief.

Anyway, yeah, if you don't like the game, please don't point it out in every fucking post about the game. You basically become the asshole who feels the need to tell everyone whenever something they like sucks. You don't like it, just ignore it. That's life.
