E3 2007: Disney now offering movie rentals for download on XBL Marketplace photo

As Haley's been telling you, like NOW. Seriously. Go turn on your 360. Titles like Bridge to Terabithia and The Fox and The Hound 2 are among a growing library of Disney films available for download. We're not kidding about the "growing" part, either. The list is getting longer by the minute.

Microsoft is making good use of its partnership with Disney-ABC Domestic Television in an effort to reach the younger market, but don't let that fool you. With movies like Touchstone's Deja Vu and Miramax's The Queen, there's more than just cartoons on the way. Hi-def new release rentals are 480 points, and the standard-def new releases are 320 points.

With a big name like Disney releasing its movies this way, do you think disc media is headed for extinction sooner than we expected? Hit the comments and tell us what you think, if you're not busy watching The Queen.

Spoilers: The girl cracks her head open falling off a log, the retarded dancing penguin saves the day, and there's no fucking way I'll ever watch Fox and the Hound 2.

And who'd want to when you can watch that Queen Whats-her-name movie? :D

I don't see this phasing out discs when the only normal version of the system comes with a paltry 20 gig hard drive. Yeah sure there the 120, but that's not exactly mainstream (overpriced upgrade or overpriced Elite). Has Sony done anything like this on it's network? Considering their assets, I can't see why not, unless they are THAT desperate to push the Blu Rays.

If they're smart, they'll put up some of those old Donald Duck, Chip and Dale, Mickey Mouse cartoons that you can't find anymore.

I agree with BeeDog, that's a great idea.

I like how the guy tried to make it sound like the Disney classics were coming our way. When I think classics I think Aladdin, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, ect. Maybe it's just me but Sky High and Happy Feet aren't classics in my book.

Hello peoples! This announcement means a lot more than: ZOMG!! There are Disney movies available on Live! What you're seeing here is Microsoft's attempt to disrupt the rental market. Not to mention the Comcast monopoly.

Hey, Happy Feet isn't a Disney film! Do you guys do any simple research?

Disney movies are coming out on Blue-ray. This is Microsoft's way of not having to say "you can't play a disney disc in this system."

Anyone who thinks that Xbox-style short-term rental-only media rights on Disney movies are significant obviously knows nothing about the viewing habits of young children. I've seen kids wear out VHS tapes. They're not going to be happy with one- or two-day rentals.

D-tiod at least put a picture of a disney cartoon on there instead of a non-disney film...

@cryocide: Somehow, I don't think MS is seeing that notion as a flaw in their plan. The parents paying for every download? Maybe. If they care enough. I can see plenty of them just shrugging and saying "It's cheaper than buying the disc."
