Call of Duty 4 -- the latest in Infinity Ward's war-as-interactive-cinema series -- has recieved the public trailer treatment thanks to E3, and you can catch the whole thing in the above clip.
It's refreshing to see that not only are they abandoning the overused WWII backdrop in favor of modern warfare, but they're also not jumping into the one-game-away-from-cliché Middle Eastern conflict setting. Placing the entire thing in neo-Cold-War climes gives it an air of creativity, and fills me with the urge to watch Red Dawn.
Oooh. It's nice to think about communists again instead of these damn terrorists. Can finally go back to the good old 'if it's red, it's dead' philosophy of killing.
You do realise that the "evil communist" is a misnomer manufactured in the 80's by a government afraid of being undermined?
Anyway, COD4 looks set to take up permanent residence in my disc tray. In comparison to this Halo 3 looks like the gaming equivolent of treading in a dog's egg but not realising until you've already paddled it across your living room carpet.
Banj.... that you for explaining the joke. Did you know that if the drugs fund communism, and anyone wearing red is a terrorist? Wait... or is it the other way around.
I don't know why so many people are saying this will blow halo3 out of the water. Compare how much actual STORY GAMEPLAY COD4 has to Halo 3.... Pretty much nothing in the halo 3 department :/. All of my friends are saying halo 3 will suck... Most of them didn't even play the beta. The beta, I admit, wasn't entirely that great, but in my opinion, better than halo 2 (because it felt more like halo 1).

ANYWAY....... COD4 does look good, and I couldn't agree more that it really reminds me of Red Dawn. (**Looks out window for commie invasion). The only problem I see is the "REAL IS BROWN" trend... God help us.
I hope you can play as the Eastern European faction. That might actually be innovative for a change. The fact that the CoD franchise is being commended for going with a slightly (and only slightly) less cliche theme this time around. The whole NATO vs. Warsaw Pact thing isn't any more original than it was 20 years ago when it was overused in every medium.
COD2 & 3 looked great too. It's when you realised that everything was scripted and you were fighting against dumb (and often infinite spawning) automatons along linear levels that it didn't look so great. They can put in as many cinematics as they like but if the core experience sucks as bad as it did in earlier incarnations it will be a terrible game.
