Another contender is stepping up to take on the MMO giant that is World of Warcraft, and this time it's the folks over at Vigil Games (the dudes who brought us Darksiders) and THQ, who are bringing us Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online for PC. For those unfamiliar with the Warhammer 40,000 universe, humanity has expanded into the far reaches of space, and they are dealing with the consequences of contact with both friendly and hostile alien cultures.

The gameplay appears to revolve around two of the main factions in Warhammer 40,000: the Imperium of Man and the Orks. Fans of Warhammer will have to explain more -- I could never get into the series. I bought the figurines once, but my art skills are so terrible that I painted one and then was so embarrassed I never touched them again.

Vigil Games has stated that more specific details about Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online will be available this August at gamescom.

Hmmmm, not sure how this is going to work. I know a lot about Warhams but not about MMOs. I was hoping it would be more like the Inquisitor game, but it does look quite good.

Oh, and dibs....

I was more excited about the 40K FPS/TPS Space Marine title. It actually looked decent...unlike the steaming pile of poo that is Fire Warrior on the PS2. That game is atrocious.

As long as we're showing models....Oh hey look at my Traitor Guard army...

Based on that trailer, I would not be able to play as a Tau Battlesuit. Thus, all interest has been lost.

Seriously though, Warhammer 40k isn't about unique individual units, unless you're playing Necrons, Eldar, or Tau, it's about shoving as many soldiers as you can possibly afford into your army based on your points limit and taking out the equally giant army of your opponent.

So yeah, looks interesting, but I'll need to see more of the gameplay mechanics before I make any judgements.

Oh sweet Jesus. I've been hyped for Guild Wars 2 for ages but this may well take my MMO slot. If there's any chance of Dark Eldar and/or Tyranids making an appearance, that's me sold.

It's the guy who does the voice of Zaeed Masaani (ME2), Lord Harrowmont (DA:O) and a few other characters. Can tell it's him easily.

Otherwise. Eh, looks alright, but I'm not entirely sure how everything'll work. Will keep my eye on it.

Was that a reticule I saw when that guy was shooting? Sweet...
Also, awesome vehicles. Where you in other games ride horses, here you fly helicopter-things? Again, sweet...

I might be down if I can play as a Grey Knight Space Marine....or a Terminator. Sisters of Battle would also make me so happy.

Never played an MMO before - but the sights of Walkers and Dreadnoughts in a field with dozens of human controlled players has awoken some sort of primal desire within me...

Would be sweet is you could traverse the warp to different planets ^^ if not, im betting its situated on Armageddon. Still does need alot of work, don't really get the feeling the titans are shaking the earth alot when moving around.

Is that the music from the Doctor Who trailer?

It's gained my interest, but you know what would've been brilliant? ...an MMO set during the Horus Heresy. Bring it!

It looks really good, but I fail to see how every MMO is "trying to take on WoW". They really aren't going to be the same target audience.

Quick plot summary: Humanity set out to the stars some time in the future using technology that let us enter another dimension called "The Warp" and we colonized many planets. Then Old Night happened, where the warp became too perilous to navigate, and many ships were lost and destroyed. Human colonies were isolated and to be preyed upon by vile aliens and the new arrival of psykers, or psychic beings. Then, a man simply known as the Emperor united all of Earth and set out to reunite humanity into one grand civilization exactly at the time that the warp storms ceased. This reunification of all human settlements was called the Great Crusade, and his armies were vast and featured many different military branches. At the front of the Crusade was the super human Space Marines, led by 20 artificial sons of the Emperor called Primarchs. By the 30th millenium, humanity almost dominated the galaxy when his favored son and smartest general Horus turned against his father and started what is known as the Horus Heresy. Within the Warp, sentient beings existed and were powerful enough to create daemons and be considered gods. Psykers use the power of the warp to manipulate the laws of our physical world, but now sentient monsters have made their presence known from this dimension and Horus sold his soul to them so that he may overthrow his father and claim control over all of humanity with his new blessed armies. The following 10,000 years are filled with humanity trying to survive in a dangerous galaxy against aliens, extra-dimensional daemons, and heretics.

Also, YESSSS!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D I want to play this sooo bad :O

Please be good!

@Ninfan1990 Why should they introduce Tyranids as a playable race?
They should really be like NPC race, because of all the swarm-feel around them, being controlled by Hive Fleet Brains etc. Necrons should be treated as NPC race also. Playable races should be : All factions of the Imperium of Man (marines, guards, inqisition), Orkz, Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Chaos (All divisions).

Oh and the trailer is super-awesome, will wait 'till 2012 for this because whatever you may think, this MMO will be EPIC STUFF!

There was a fair amount of Chaos (daemons and marines) in that trailer, so I wouldn't say it leaned only towards Imperium and Orks.

I was hoping for Planetside-type gameplay but this looks a bit WoW-ish to me.

lol well we have vehicles and some FPS aspects with the reticule. only two races seems a bit restrictive. they must make up for it in class selection or at least specializations of some kind!
