E3 10: Slimmer Xbox 360 shipping now for $299 photo

Microsoft just ended its conference on a high note. Don Mattrick showed off the new Xbox 360 hardware, and it's hella shiny. Here's what the slim 360 is packing: 250 GB hard drive, built-in 802.11n wi-fi, and it's supposed to be Kinect ready and "whisper quiet."

How much does this bad boy cost? $299. Also, it'll be available for purchase this week. In a move that got everyone in the audience to yell like madmen, Mattrick announced Microsoft would be giving this newly designed Xbox 360 to all of the people in attendance for free.  Damn, guys!

Destructoid had a hands-on look with the new system - continue reading for the gritty details.

2 questions before I run out and get this.

1. HDD non-removable?
2. How can I transfer stuff from old to the new?

I'm praying the hardware is compatible, as Alexei said.

Also, I hope this will FINALLY do away with all the problems the console has.

I have to say I was a bit impressed by the show. And if this thing doesn't die on you, I'd have a great interest in purchasing it.

wait, does this mean the new one doesn't have an ethernet port?

For some reason I was impressed by this. Of course, built-in wi-fi should have been there from the start, but the whole same price for more strategy is one I like.

Quite cool of them to give a bunch away too.

Yes, DeltaBurnt. As soon as this E3 madness ends, that is.

Look's like Sony is set to come in second again just like last year.. I own both systems Live blows PSN out of the water.. Kinect is a first day buy for me as well that thing looks so freaking cool.. And now with new hardware as far as the 360 is concerned im stoked..

I am interested to see what Sony has in the bag better not let the fans down like they did at E3 09.. Move has me curious and if they impress that also be a first day buy for me.. More importantly they better bring heat and better changes regarding the PSN its so tired stale and lame..

I'm simultaneously jealous and glad that they got new xbox's. Being game reviewers, they probably aren't lacking for 360's. On the other hand, free is great for everyone.

Kind of evil to release a new console one week after announcing it. Of course the old ones will stop selling when they announce the slim version, but I know I'd be pissed if I bought an elite a few days ago.

$199 is not too bad a deal at all. Especially with the free wifi. Is there a new contoller is what I want to know.

Obvious Question Time! Will this version piss it self and die as much as the other versions?

So instead of making the wireless contained with in the unit in the first place, they spent the best part of three years releasing "new" versions of the console and forcing consumers to pay an extra fee to get a wireless adapter,
They then bring out a console with wireless built in and what seems to be a non-removable hdd.

You can really see how Microsoft is run by business people and not computing engineers.
Nice marketing, but its a shame consumers are starting to slowly catch on now.

They showed a better look at the console in the after show. Hard-drive is hidden under a little panel and slides out.

Very Nice, I was wondering why that 360 had been sitting on the side for the whole time, and then he goes and lifts it up to reveal the new one. Nice...Once again, nice.
Nice.

@Statik: Um, you mean third? You're forgetting about Nintendo...

Oh, and I personally predict the PS Move beating out 'Kinect' and bringing Sony to second.

anyway, i think the re-design is very sexy. :) Very good! now lets hope it doesn't break down like the old one, yes?

Kinect, on the other hand, can go die in a fire. >_>

Smaller, quieter, and in all likelihood still possessing the same propensity for overheating and RRODs as its older siblings.

Would be nice if, you know, MS came out up front and said "we took steps to make sure that the design flaws of the previous versions have been fixed." But their lawyers probably won't let them say that.

"Kinect-ready"

That's such a false feature...aren't the previous, "fat" Xbox 360's Kinect-ready? DURRRRRRRR

If anything, this redesigned 360 should've had Kinect installed in the hardware, or at least bundled with a different price.

Eh. I still think it's ugly, so I've got no intention of ditching the 360 I have now just to feed them more money for features it should have had from the start.

Does anyone know the specs? Will it have an ethernet port? Will it be compatible with old Xbox 360 Hard Drives, and will the 250GB it comes with be a standard Xbox 360 Hard Drive? How many USB ports in the front/back? What is the little button and slot thing on the front? What does "Kinect Ready" mean? Can't my old Xbox 360 use Kinect?

edit: the button and slot thing that is not the disc drive, of course. I'm talking about the smaller one in the bottom.

If it doesn't have the Red Ring failure rate of the previous console design... then this is the biggest news to come out of the MS conference. I might seriously consider getting an Xbox if this unit proves to be reliable. I've long said that MS needs to introduce an entirely new design to get away from the red ring issues - you can't tell which of the current units have the new chip and which don't... and the new chip hasn't seemed to make much difference. A new design might make all the difference in the world.

I'll still wait and see... and see what the failure rate is over the next year, but if they've kicked the previous problems, then the only thing holding me back is the annual fee for gold membership... and it might be worth it to play Halo online.

If you have a 360 fat, Kinect will require a second power source to use, where as the slim model will run Kinect with only one power source. That's what Kinect Ready means.

There is an ether net port (shown in the after show) and the HDD is removable, but looks different from the normal HDD. Didn't say how you can transfer things over, but I assume it's the same deal you did when you bought a new HDD for the 360 fat.

I understand that, but the picture gives the impression that they removed the ethernet port and replaced it with a wireless card.

Good thing I bought a spare or as I like to call it an xtrabox
