E3 10: Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy Tactics for iPhone photo

I just thought everyone knew. I found out by surprise, but I didn't think too much about it until I checked with Square Enix myself. I was at a little shindig last night, and Secret of Mana came up in casual conversation. Of course, I mentioned that the classic SNES RPG is coming to iPhone, and everyone threw their hands up and yelled "WHAT!?" or something similar.

So yeah, Squaresoft classic Secret of Mana will be an iPhone game, coming out very soon. I was previewing another game at Square Enix's booth, and I heard Secret of Mana music coming out of nowhere somewhere around me. My head whipped around and I saw a screen playing a trailer for the game. Checking with Square Enix, they confirmed that the game would be coming out this year. Excite.

In that same conversation I learned that Final Fantasy Tactics is also coming to the iPhone. Square Enix says that this is based on the PSP version, which I know is going to have mixed reactions. Still, it'll be great to have both of these games on my phone so I can never finish them again.

I don't get why people would give "mixed reactions" for the PSP version of FFT. Okay, it had minor slowdown issues, but...really? The translation is actually competent, and aside from a new character and battle or two it's basically the same exact game.

The slowdown for the PSP made it virtually unplayable for me. Sure it had extra characters and jobs, but that was no excuse.

The only thing wrong I can thing of in the original PS1 release is some translation issues, which are minor at best.

Final Fantasy Tactics might work okay for the iPhone, but how are you supposed to play an action RPG like Secret of Mana without a controller? This is not the kind of game that should be on the iPhone, but I admit it would be kind of cool to see that.

$5? Hopeful but doubtful, they are $12 on Wii ware, but that would be nice.

@Woogity: On-screen buttons and such. That's all.

I'd be surprised if FFT didn't have the slowdown at all.

@Los255

IMO, the original translation is nearly incomprehensible at times, and there are a few pretty huge bugs in there as well (such as some stats being WAAAAAAAY more powerful than they were intended to be). I believe the PSP version fixes a number of those issues.

But yeah, just seriously cannot stand the original translation. The story is confusing enough as it is, without the translation's added obfuscation :)

*whimper* Why do you people want to destroy my species so badly? It was bad enough when you could only do it at home. Now you're putting it on a phone? Our only salvation is the hope that the controls are horrid. Oh no no no this is not good at all

I love Tactics, but I don't see myself playing a game like that on my iPhone. I don't think I've ever spent more than 5 minutes at a time playing anything on there.

Secret of Mana, with crappy (no offense to Woolsey, it wasn't his fault) translation intact? That game deserves a remake, Square ended up cutting so much stuff from the game when it was decided it'd be a cartridge-based game and not CD-based.

There are a lot of changes for FFT from PSX to PSP. The game on the PSP is much closer to the original japanese release, especially difficulty wise.

on-screen buttons for SOM? didn't that utilize, like, ALL the buttons on the SNES controller? plus the d-pad? that's a lot of screen being taken up by buttons. But hopefully they can streamline it so that maybe they just have the d-pad on the left side of the screen, and attacking, menu, spells, etc is used as touch controls. I'd be interested in seeing how this pans out, SOM is definitely one of my favorite SNES games.

I wish Square would stop remaking FFT and simply make a FFTA3 that has the gravity of the original storyline-wise. FFTA1 & 2 were simply kiddy shit. I'd like an M-rated addition to the series, but not in the sense of "lol let's include sex in it like Space Dating Simulator 2" or "let's make it grimdark without having actual substance."

I love that the iPhone is getting these and I will pick up both, but I know they will just collect dust like ff 1&2 are, while I keep playing minigore and zombieville

@Keres: The biggest gamebreaker bug in the original Tactics, IMO, was a problem with how they implemented the menu such that on certain jobs, you could gain 999 RP (or whatever the skill currency was) and unlock all the skills free. While you were at the "Do you wanna purchase this skill? Y/N" option, you could still page-up/down through the menu to buy a different skill, setting off a pretty bizarre chain reaction of glitches.
