The smaller Xbox 360 250 GB Elite models cannot physically display the oft-gotten "red ring of death," according to a system specification sheet Joystiq got its hands on. Why is that, you ask? Because if (when) one of these new consoles experiences technical issues, it will display green lights instead.
That's right -- a green ring of light will be used to alert us when it's time to phone up Xbox customer support. How delightful! There are a few other takeaways from the side-by-side specs, but really, nothing can top this funny design choice.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Good job Microsoft.
I hope this is NOT the case!
Ha, I could totally see that happening.
I'd like to see this in court and see how it plays out.
You're never going to see a GROD.
Jasper is 65nm for CPU/GPU, Valhalla is the 45nm CPU/GPU revision, and you're never going to prevent hardware failures altogether, that's impossible. Though given there have been close to nothing about Falcons or Jaspers getting RROD on the tubes, it's pretty much given the problems are small enough it's not worth reporting anymore.
Only other issue is the disc scratching if you move the console, which they still haven't fixed. Never had the issue myself, but there are a lot of well... let's just say less than bright people out there, like a certain Dustructoid writer...
Hopefully you're not talking about while the system is on. That's like moving your computer around while it's running (or any other console for that matter).
Which is to say: fucking stupid.
How prone are the newer 360s to failure? I want one to play Gears 3 and after that price drop I'm certainly in the market for another one but I just don't want it to die. After being out for 5 years have they finally figured out how to make one that doesn't conk out every other year?
That includes you, safari 5.
Pretty much any system that uses a 175W power supply or lower no longer have high failure rates. The whole issue is due to heating up and cooling down too fast causing the solder connections to crack, and systems made 2008+ with the newer chips just simply never get hot enough for it to become a problem.
There are still a lot of older launch-2007 systems out there though, and there's really no way to fix them, and that's why you still hear about people getting RROD. The people still claiming it's a big deal on the new consoles are either trolls or idiots, probably both.
Congrats Microsoft!
Actually it's overheating the motherboard (which isn't supported well) which, over time, warps it. The warping causes the solder connections to break away, hence the xclamp fix which secures the board and components down.
It's not the speed of heating or cooling, it just gets too hot. The hottest your xbox gets is right after you turn it off. The fans stop running but everything is still hot and it goes through a short period of superheating. Always quit to dashboard for a while after playing to let it cool down before turning it off folks!
"What do you propose we do about it?"
"Just to 'troll' the fans as they themselves put it, let's change the color and not fix it.."
"What color do you propose we change it to?"
"Green."
"It already lights up green though, we discussed that last week..."
"No, make it green when they have a 'green ring of death'."
"Oh, haha. Now I get it. You'll know nothing is wrong with it, and then you'll figure out that we are too lazy to actually fix it! Hahaha! Promotion for you!"
I assume the meeting went down something like that.
Now that I think of if, they actually did a study of their warranty claims on the three consoles a while back. If you check page 7 of the PDF you can see how the RROD claims dropped after Falcon and Jasper released. There was still a lot of stock of older systems on shelves when Falcon was released, but you can see after mid 2008 after those dried up how much an impact it made even after the first revision.

I feel sorry for all xbox owners lmfao.
Wow, nice trick! I'm surprised it's taken me this long to ever hear of it.
I'm guessing this goes not just for the 360, but all electronics, right?
firstly though- most devices are designed to handle the heats they get better than the 360 board.
but yeah, technically goes for any device that heats up, has fans and traps air in a small space. Unmoving air over hot components heats very quickly.
Though not all devices have a cooler running mode (like xbox dashboard) which it can cool down to.
...Other than the Xbox360 having a MAJOR hardware problem and Microsoft not doing a damn thing about it except sweeping it under the carpet and pretending it was never there and it never happened.
But I finally got so used to saying RRoD! Now I have to start using GRoD? First Natal to Kinect, and now this? Ugh!
