E3 10: New Mortal Kombat will indeed be gory photo

Sure, the new Mortal Kombat trailer makes it look like the game will be returning to it's gory heritage. Of course, WB could very well pull a MK vs DC and not always show you the gore. Thankfully, we can be certain the series will be as brutal as ever as evidence by the Mortal Kombat banners lining the West Hall entrance of E3 2010 this year.

As you can see above, the words "Finish Him!" are displayed right next to some poor guy who's getting his head ripped off clean. Another banner shows what looks like Sub-Zero proudly holding up the decapitated head with spine attached as the phrase "Fatality" is displayed.

It feels like the '90s all over again! We'll be sure to bring you some gory coverage of the new Mortal Kombat at E3 this week.

That's ridiculously cool. Surprised WB is taking such a risk, but hey, let's give them a fair shot first.

With this and Sonic 4, I am glad Developers are finally realizing that, even while in the minority, hardcore gamers are a vocal group. We like certain things and don't want you fucking up the mechanics by adding in new modes and characters that are losing touch with why the game was fun in the first place.

2010 is becoming the year of a return to my childhood....in HD!

Where is the "Link" button on nanowerx's comment?

Also, where is the "Ban" button on Corduroy Turtle's comment?

Seriously though, Mortal Kombat is my JAM! It was the first fighting game I ever played and even though I have been enjoying Capcom's releases a lot more as of late, there will always be a place in my heart for Mortal Kombat. If you've een following Ed Boon's Twitter account(@noobde) you would know that he's been saying it all along, this is a return to a more MATURE-rated Mortal Kombat and is what the fans have been asking for.

This, along with Marvel vs Capcom 3, makes this the best E3 in over 4 years.

There's only so many times a series can "come back" before you realize it should just stay dead. Nostalgia is funny like that. You remember the good and ignore the bad.

I'm not hating for hating's sake. It's just my opinion.

I realize this is a game site, but I was waaaay more excited for a movie- despite their past bastardization of the series, I really have little interest in a mortal kombat game, or a fighter in general, as they're all fucking stagnating as far as I'm concerned. 2/2.5D whatever, they're all treading water in my opinion. I love mortal kombat, but I can't see myself getting excited for a game. holding out for a movie, despite how long it's slated to take.

Oddly enough, I'm sure that the developers saw that there's actually nothing wrong with going back to the over-the-top gore after they played God of War 3, which has more "real mortal kombat" in it than the last 3 MK games combined.

@Corduroy Turtle,

Respectable fighters like what, exactly? Street Fighter? BlazBlue? King of Fighters? UFC? Smackdown? See what I'm getting at here yet, kitten?

Let me put it this way and in a very important way. Mk vs. DC has the best story mode of any fighting game ever. Period. These japanese developers couldn't tell a story if their life depended on it (see: Udon Comics Street Fighter content being lightyears beyond the native Japanese drivel). And some of us like the distinctly western look, feel, atmosphere, story, and mythology of MK. For us, we enjoyed these things and truth be told, we STILL enjoy these things.

The primary complaint anyone can lobby against MK is simply that it wasn't developed in Japan. That was it's biggest crime. Frankly, most other people (as in the 3 million who bought MK vs DC) don't live in the delusional fairyland where advanced knowledge of Neo Genesis Evangelion = Asian Girlfriend and hot 13 year old wetsuit sex. Thus I can see how this franchise doesn't appeal to you.

I know it's the "cool" thing to hate on MK. Meanwhile you forget the most important thing when dissing this franchise. ALL of the imitators are gone now. Wargods? Gone. Time Killers? Gone. Killer Instinct? Gone. Way of the Warrior, Kasumi Ninja, Eternal Champion, Revengers of Venageance, War Gods, Biofreaks? Gone. So when all the imitators are dead yet the original remains, SOMEONE has to be buying it AND enjoying it. Otherwise it wouldn't keep happening. So please keep this in mind when you decide to pass judgment on another franchise with a loyal fanbase.

And also, good luck making ANY sense of whatever the fuck is happening in SSFIV until the Udon Comics come out...

You do realize that literally every single Mortal Kombat game that wasn't a spin off has gotten both good sales and reviews, right? I don't know where this myth that Mortal Kombat is finished comes from. More Capcom fighters have bombed than MK games.

Wow. Sheppy, you must be playing a different game. Agree to disagree.

I was refering to Tekken and Street Fighter by the way. If you play a fighting game for the story mode then you're doing it wrong.

@sheppy- Wow! condescend much? Allow me.... Ahem

ZOMG!! MK sells millions still? Then it MUST be good!!! Along with Britney Spears and Hanson!!

Ok enough of that, in all seriousness, yes people like MK and I won't tell them they shouldn't. But to say that the ONLY primary complaint one can have about MK is that it wasn't developed by asians is utterly ridiculous (along with your assumption that an expertise in Evangelion can get you laid).

A valid reason on hating MK would be the gameplay mechanics aren't up to snuff as other fighting game series?

The 3 million people that bought MK vs. DC were DC fans.

Mortal Kombat was based on gore. It was cool when we were kids because there was lots of blood and that was thrilling for the time. As a fighting game, it boiled down to uppercuts and sweep kicks. Mortal Kombat is not respected at any major fighting game tournaments because it is not well balanced and it's characters all look like a 10 year old drew up the concepts. Fatalities are only cool once. Midway went out of (nearly) went out of business for a reason. They made shit games.

Mortal Kombat was ridiculous and silly but that's why I enjoyed it back in the day. As a fighting game it wasn't all that great to me compared to Marvel vs. Capcom or Rival Schools but then again I didn't really play Mortal Kombat for the fighting engine. I played it to murder Sonya Blade.

@ sheppy: Dude, I can see that you are a hardcore MK fan and you might be taking my hatred of the MK series a little too personally. I am curious how I've "defeated" my own points. I think the reason for some of my meaner comments is the fact that I'm tired of the MK series making a so-called comeback.
