E3 10: Microsoft reveals ESPN3 on Xbox Live (Update) photo

I may never turn off my Xbox 360 again.

At this morning's Microsoft E3 press conference, ESPN anchors Josh Elliott and Trey Wingo announced an exclusive deal with Microsoft that will bring the sports network to Xbox Live. The first year will see more than 3,500 live sporting events aired on Xbox Live, most of them in HD. But whereas the PlayStation Network has an agreement with MLB.TV, ESPN on Xbox Live will offer a wide range of sports: college football and basketball, Major League Baseball, NBA basketball, and soccer.

ESPN integration includes Kinect support -- during a high-definition playback of an Ohio State-USC game, Elliott, a USC fan, simply said "Xbox: replay" after a touchdown to show it again, to the dismay of Ohio State supporter Wingo. "Kinect is gonna make taunting even easier," said Elliott with glee. Another Kinect application allowed Elliott to vote for who he thought was going to win the game by saying "Xbox: switch to USC." Finally, you'll have access to a full array of scores, statistics, and video highlights from ESPN.com...without ever leaving a live broadcast.

No release date was announced, but they did note that all of this content will be available at "no additional cost" on top of your Xbox Live Gold membership.

[Update: Since this agreement essentially brings ESPN3 to Xbox Live, the content will only be available if your ISP includes ESPN3. Many of the nation's major broadband players, such as Comcast, Verizon, Cox Commnications, and AT&T (DSL and U-verse), already support ESPN3, but one of the biggest -- Time Warner Cable -- doesn't. Check out the full list of affiliated ISPs here, courtesy of Engadget, and pray that yours is included. -Thanks, Joe!]

[Update 2: According to the New York Times, ESPN3 will make its Xbox Live debut in November.]

This was the only thing besides the Gears and Reach footage that I was interested in. Thank God that they made the wise decision to include it in the gold subscription. This will be MUCH more useful to me than the Twitter and Facebook stuff.

What's the over/under on the percentage of these 3500 live sporting events that are available on ESPN, The Deuce, ESPNU, or ABC? I'm going with 95%.

Woah... that is truly one of the best announcements I've heard this E3. ESPN, no additional cost, all sports pro/college, all at my finger tips with live replay. Hahaha, really sucks to be PS3 owner now even more.

I heard about this and got immediately excited, then even more so when I hear dit was free, then I realized like Hulu this probably won't come to Canada and I got very fucking sad.

hence espn's switch from espn360 to espn3. saw this coming months ago, however, that doesnt make it any less cool.

Best part of the conference imo. Trey and Josh actually know how to speak to a crowd/read teleprompters properly.

This is huge. I love baseball but I never really take time to watch it...but being able to hit the 360's home button, go to the dashboard, and switch to the game might be just enough motivation for me.

I wonder if they'll have cross-game chat for this feature? Maybe even cross-game video chat via Kinect? That'd be fucking life-changing.

This is one of the best things out of that conference. If I can watch a bunch of out-of-market stuff I will be so pleased.

I'm excited about this, if only for the sole reason that I do not have cable. I was hoping for a Hulu announcement, but this is awesome as well.

@Iceciro

You sound a little salty man. How exactly is this diluting your hobby? A channel on a dashboard that is completely unobtrusive to the gameplay in other games? I'll agree that some of MS's ideas are a bit contrived, but this does nothing but open the console as a viable entertainment hub. Videogames are still being released at a ridiculous rate, and a larger audience only means that development costs can be increased in the future. (allowing for bigger, better games in all genres)

They also showed gameplay from three blockbuster "core" titles, all of which look pretty damn awesome (Despite my hatred of Halo and GOW). I really just don't get the point that you are trying to make.

Eh, maybe I was a little strong, but I still feel like none of this is related to gaming - which is why you could see the gaming press yawning hard during microsoft's conference. Seriously, watch the e3 videos. I think one guy event went to sleep.

Also, sorry, Halo is frat-boy gaming. I get dragged in by people to play every installment of that franchise and I come out a little more saddened at Bungie every time.

I don't give a shit about sports in general, but I guess that's cool.

Where's the internet browser? PS3 has one. The Wii has one. Hell, the DS and PSP have one! The iPhone! Come on, man!

Eh...I am excited about this for sure, but I'm worried about the quality content. Sure, there will be 3,500 games broadcast a year, but I would be SHOCKED if they streamed MNF on this or anything that can pull high ratings on TV (I know the screen shot shows some "high profile" games, but that could all be for show).

Also, the idea of these sorts of mergers excites me. Netflix + ESPN3 = what is cable tv?

The ISP thing is a pain in the ass. I've had to run around town finding hotspots to watch World Cup on ESPN3 since my ISP doesn't have it. Why God?
