E3 10: Jimpressions of Sonic Colors photo

Dale North had told me while previewing Sonic Colors that he felt the game was better than Sonic the Hedgehog 4. I was hesitant to believe him, especially given Sonic's rather miserable history on the Wii. I'm not prepared to agree with Dale yet, but my experience with Colors was pretty positive. To complement our full preview, here are some quick Jimpressions for you.

So, Sonic Colors is like Sega took Sonic Unleashed, extracted the good bits and then threw 90% of the liquidy bullsh*t in the trashcan. At least that's what I felt after playing through two full zones and a boss battle. The game shifts between behind-the-hedgehog Sonic Adventure-style running and true 2D platforming seamlessly, and really feels like a continuation of Unleashed's "daytime" levels with the Werehog crap left firmly behind.

The "Color" powerups are easy to activate, although a little hard to control without practice. They're rather fun and clever, though, especially the Yellow Color, which lets Sonic drill through the ground in 2D areas. From what I saw, the game looked hugely promising. However, so did Sonic Unleashed when I first tried that, so I'll reserve judgment for now. Cautious optimism is the recommended stance until more gaming is done.

Cautious optimism is more than most people had when it was announced. Progress!

Sonic games always seem pretty decent initially.

Let's wait and see how awful it is next month.

I really like what I've seen so far of this game, but I know if anyone can screw it up it's Sonic Team. "Cautious optimism" is a really good rule to follow for any Sonic game these days.

This is the last I'm going to read about it until the review comes out. I can't stand another disappointment.

Jim you're supposed to bash the game, BASH!

I also reserve judgment until Sonic Team decides to default the game with only pressing the right directional pad for the entire game.

I dunno, I'll wait for it to come out before I... Oh who am I kidding. First time I hear of some crappy gameplay mechanic (ie, werehog) I'm going to kill myself.

I hope for Jim's sake that they put in some more girl-on-hedgehog action at the end. I know how much it'd disappoint him if they left that shit out.

Jim, does it have that whole "hold right and quick time events is the platforming" feel that unleashed did?

Here's hoping this is indeed decent. I LOVED the daytime missions in Sonic Unleashed. And let's be honest here, they were the only things you could like out of that game.

Yay! I really like that they stuck to the Unleashed level design. Those daytime stages were the most fun I've had with a Sonic game in years.

Salnax hit the nail on the head. It's progress for sure.

@Mortrialus
One is 2D running pressing right and all that jazz (Unleashed) and one is 3D pressing up or forward and all that jazz (Adventure).

@Mortrialus -- You DO remember playing sonic adventure right? Unless you were running at a different angle, the camera follows behind sonic, much like it is here.

But Sonic Unleashed is a decent game. I don't get it.

If it's anything like Sonic Adventure, then forget it. But if it's the good bits of Unleashed, then I'm game. The demo was excellent and it's too bad Sega needed to bloat the experience with an Overworld and crappy Werehog.
