I've heard some rumours that the reason it's not called Contra is that the creator of Contra didn't want the Contra name attached to this.

Anyway, if that's the case, the creator of Contra is being silly. There are far worse Contra games out there than this. In fact, I'm willing to say that based off my time with the game, Hard Corps could do a lot to lift the Contra name to new heights of prestige.
It's a game that I think every Contra fan would at least like, while also making non-Contra fans happy as well.

@ epic-koryuken- I think your talking about Contra 3, and I thought it was just the Konami code again at the title screen; up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start.
Contra 4 is on the DS, and I don't think the Konami code works. There is a way to get 99 lives though. You have to die at the exact moment the first level mid-boss explodes. When you respawn, you'll have 99 lives.
That's the only way I ever beat that game on Hard. It's so evil.

In the NA version of Contra 3 for the SNES there is no Konami code as far as I know, you can only boost your lives up to 7 in the options.

Now they just need to separate "Castlevania" from "Lords of Shadow." That or just permanently divorce Castlevania from 3D.

I love Contra.......this looks like Metal Slug. I have no doubt that this will be a good game, and to me it looks like they dropped the "Contra" moniker to allow some breathing room for creativity (always good).
I think I would feel more comfortable if they called it something else, but of course this is incomplete work so a lot could change from now to release.

@ Hemogoblin: Yeah, that's the vibe I get from all the news on this game as well. Looks fun. Now we just need a spiritual successor to Gunstar Heroes (or a revival of the franchise) and we'll have all 3 of the platforming shoot-em-ups I adored as a kid: Metal Slug (which is still going), Contra (I'll go ahead and file Hard Corps Uprising as a spiritual successor), and Gunstar!
You were drilling this guy and, still, he refused, under Konami's orders I'm sure, to agree with you. Konami should have just called this "new" game Kontra. In either case, it looks pretty cool. =)
This actually makes me want to play a Contra game, even though I never have.
But looking at the graphics of the current games for Wii, the charm of this is lost.
Arc System Works definitely have me more interested in this game than any of the others. I only wish it'd show up on WiiWare as well.

the game looks good but those ain't contra-like characters...they look like ninjas! like ibuki from SFIII xD good they didn't attach the contra name to it!!

I doubt that Nintendo would pay for exclusivity to the Contra name. It's not exactly a multi-million selling series.
