E3 10: Hands-on with Golden Sun: Dark Dawn photo

All this week I am going to be giving ridiculously quick hands-on impressions of all the games I see on the E3 show floor. Since I think everything is a little amazing, they will be rated, from least to most favorite: 1 (A Little Amazing!), 2 (Kind of Amazing!), 3 (Pretty Amazing!), 4 (AMAZING!), and 5 (The Most Amazing Thing I Have Ever Seen!).

Ah, Golden Sun, how I've missed you so.

Not seen since the gone, but never forgotten Game Boy Advance, the Golden Sun series has finally been reborn on the Nintendo DS in the form of the sequel Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (SO FOREBODING!). In my hands-on time I got to try out the two main modes in the game: Adventure and Battle.

In Adventure, just like in the old games, you control a main character as he walks around between towns and battles. Instead of most role-playing games ignoring things like puzzles and stuff, what makes Golden Sun: Dark Dawn stand apart is its reliance on very Zelda-esque environmental puzzles and level design. Using the game's magic system -- called Psynergy -- you must traverse obstacles and solve puzzles. In the demo, you are given two Psynergy powers: "Move" and "Fire". Using the stylus and touch screen, you can activate both powers. "Move" literally moves objects on-screen like rocks and statues (a quick stylus swipe!), while "Fire" lets you shoot a fireball in any direction (flick of the touch screen!). What I love about this mode is the puzzles really are clever and well-designed. They don't feel at all forced just to make the game have more variety. If anything, they are the best part of playing Golden Sun!

Battle is much more obvious. It's ... a battle. In an RPG! Just like every other role-playing game, the battles are turn-based, with characters selecting their attacks from a menu. Fight, Psynergy, summons: all the stuff you are used to seeing in a Golden Sun game is intact. But what is worth mentioning is everything looks really good. The battles are beautiful, with some of the most dramatic and over-the-top magic spells and summons this side of Final Fantasy!

What else can I say. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn is exactly what a Golden Sun game should look and feel like on the Nintendo DS. The demo is short, so I had no idea what to expect of the story, but I only assume it will be something about dawn. A dark dawn.

Rating: 4 out of 5 (AMAZING!)

Those are the best 3d graphics I've seen on DS, better than FF4. I still prefer 2d to low quality 3d, but that looks pretty good.

I don't know why but the first screenshot in the article's header makes me think of Gaia Online in looks. I'm rather curious on one detail though, which I doubt will be answered until the game comes out. Will this be a stand-alone, or part 1 of a story? I loved how The Lost Age built off things presented in the first game and I hope to see that again. I doubt this game's gonna require a connection with the Lost Age for unlocks though. I hope not at least, I lost my copies of the GBA games XD

I actually can't wait for this game.

I'm probably the only person who wishes they kept the really awesome 2D art style instead of shoe-horning it into 3D. I'm still not sure if it's all the goofy blown-up pictures of a low-res game coloring that opinion, but that's my gut reaction.

I liked the 2D used in the old games, and I'm usually not a fan of 3D on the DS, but I was actually pretty impressed with this game's graphics when I saw them. Definitely one of the better looking examples of 3D on the DS.

What's the random encounter rate?

The biggest fault of the original was that the rediculously high random encounter rate discouraged exploring and took the fun out of puzzle solving. If there is a "repel" item, it would be extremely useful.

Interesting. Never played a Golden Sun game, but I've always wanted too, and if it has nice puzzles, I'm sold. I'm just hope the battles are interesting, 'cause I usually hate battles in JRPGs.

I agree with Hcapt, also what's the general speed of the battles, one of the things I loved about Golden Sun was how the battles could be played very quickly (good interface, fast animations, skipping through the big moves like summons) it made grinding much less of a chore, but usually the move to 3D comes with slower pacing.

What Hcapt said, that ruined those games for me. I don't want to be attacked while puzzle solving, damn it!

Golden Sun has a fairly standard turn-based battle system. They throw in a few tricks here and there, like the Djinn, which keeps things a little more interesting than generic Dragon Quest style turn-based combat, but if you can't stand typical JRPG battles I wouldn't expect this game to change your mind.

Golden Sun should be an impressive looking 2D game not a craptacular looking 3D game.

These folks all look like kids of the party from the first game with not enough distinguishing features to tell who the second parents are. I'm looking forward to the shippers in the Golden Sun fandom frothing at the mouth and whipping themselves into a firestorm as they argue over who married who after Lost Age.

Been soooo long since I played the first and I never beat the second...So now I have to go back and play these before this releases. Golden Sun is PERFECT for the DS with its Psynergy powers and touch screen.

So it's basically just a new Golden Sun game with polygonal graphics on DS? FUCKING SWEET!

Well, assuming that the framerate isn't crap like in the 3D Final Fantasy games on DS. That shit gives me a headache.

I am so glad they are keeping the same combat system. This classic turn based is my favorite, so I know I am going to waste tons of time on this like the first two.

I love Golden Sun so much. I am so ecstatic that they made another. I feared they had given up on the series, it has been so long since the last one.

I have never understood what anyone sees in Golden Sun. It was actually one of the most pedestrian RPG's I have ever played. So I'm obviously not looking forward to this.

Although I'd probably prefer 2D, I can't complain. It's a new freaking Golden Sun. The graphic style does have some nice touches, like the black outline around characters in the walky-around-adventure part of the game. And the style feels true to the original. I'm also liking the more detailed character models used during battles. Very FFVII.

There had better be some connectivity between Lost Age and this.
