Halo 3: ODST's Firefight mode was worth the purchase of ODST alone. The mode is fantastic and it's coming back in Halo: Reach with a ton of improvements. The biggest -- and most important -- change is the implementation of online matchmaking. Just like the regular multiplayer, you simply go to Firefight's matchmaking, pick a gametype and jump in.

Another addition is the ability to create custom Firefight game modes. You can set what skulls appear, make custom skulls, what type of enemies attack, loadouts, weapons and more. Imagine playing Firefight at 200% speed! These custom gametypes can also be shared with others.

If you're not about custom matches, Bungie will of course have their set of gametypes available. On top of the classic mode (where the match ends when all lives are gone), there will be the default gametype where Firefight last for just a set for those looking for quick Firefight action. Also, the Black Eye skull is removed ... thank God. Generator Defense will also have a home in Firefight and there's a mode called Rocketfight where everyone will get unlimited Rocket Launchers.

Hit the break for more on the enemies, new weapons, new armor abilities and just more Halo-ness.

As this was Firefight, I got to see the new enemy types and how the old ones have been tweaked. Most notable are the Elites and they are nothing like they were in any of the other Halos. You thought the Brutes were fierce? Just wait till you have to deal with Elites. Gone are the Drones in Firefight but in their place are the kirmisher and they are insanely fast. You almost don't want to blink as they can disappear from view within that fraction of a second. Lastly, you can now shoot the methane tanks on Grunts causing the poor little creatures to fly around like a balloon and explode. The two levels that were shown -- Waterfront and Beachhead -- saw no signs of Engineers and it's not confirmed yet whether they'll be back or not.

On to the weapons! On the UNSC side, there's a weapon called Paint. Point at a target, wait for the meter to fill up and then sit back and watch as a rain of hell falls from a UNSC spaceship. You can get hurt if you're too close to the target's location. Over on the Covenant side, the Fuel Rod Gun is back and Covenant forces have a grenade launcher like the new human version called the Concussion Rifle.

One new armor ability was also revealed called the Drop Shield. It's a deployable shield that acts like a Bubble Shield from Halo 3. People can hang out within the shield and the shield will heal players as long as it's up.

All in all, this is basically Firefight 2.0. The original Firefight was great, now it's just perfect. Halo: Reach will be out on September 14, 2010 for the Xbox 360.

I'm no Halo super fan but Bungie does multiplayer right. Haters be hatin' but it runs silky smooth and they can't argue with that.

Firefight was a blast, and these improvements sound fun.

They need to do matchmaking for this. It would be a serious oversight to repeat ODST's mistake.

Paint sounds pretty cool, like Gears' hammer. Also Elites in firefight year!

@mrsancho:

Periods mother fucker. Use them.

In other news: Looks great. Firefight was easily the best part of ODST.

Firefight was awesome and I agree that it's worth the admission price of odst (especially now that it's rock bottom dirt cheap).

I have to say (and I'm not hating or wanting to flame) but firefight is essentially horde from gears 2 and it seems bungie has ripped off the hammer of dawn now. Not that I'm complaining, who doesn't love raining down death from orbital objects after painting them with a Lazer?

Not me Debbie Mcgee.

THANK GOD for matchmaking. And a new armor ability? Sweet, I hope there's more!

I'm renewing my Live subscription just for this game.

The degree to which we can customize Reach sounds just insane. I'm going to be playing this for a long time.

I'm all over this thing. Not that the multiplayer didn't normally grab me, but I like these sort of things much more. The sort of infinite game mechanic is such a good indicator of how well built the standard gameplay of Halo (and Gears, and other games with successful modes like this) is.

So yeah, more Firefight, plus customization (which I think is always a plus) and Reach's core gameplay sounds brilliant.

You mean I can turn that freaking Black Eye skull off now? YES. My biggest peeve with Firefight was the flying bugs + no recharging stamina.

Drop in drop out? Nice! I've wanted to see that from the start. I got spoiled from the system boarderlands uses. On a after thought though. Will players with low halo skills wreck this? I would hate to get another endure with and get matched with bad players.

@Bakewell

Gears 2 popularized "Horde mode," but it was by no means the first. I don't think it's fair to say Reach copied Gears b/c not only was Gears not the first, but a large number of multiplayer FPS are now including a similar mode. I think it's more of a trend on the upswing than a case of mimicry.

@mrsancho: you really think halo 3 failed? I'm not sure being one of the best selling console exclusives is actually failing. You can hate all you want but Halo appeals to more than just halo fanboys. As long as the title keeps that mass appeal (beyong fanboys) the game will continue to be successful and you'll continue to look idiotic for making those sort of comments.
If you were being sarcastic or satirical then it went over my head and I apologize :)

Word is on the street that it was the ONLY thing worth a purchase of ODST.

@dustyblue

possibly. I quite enjoyed the singleplayer, and having a multiplayer disc with all the dlc on it
was very useful. But if you didn't enjoy those things, then yeah, I guess not.
