Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi told attendees of a Gran Turismo 5 roundtable that the version they saw at E3 yesterday was mostly finished, and that a final version would be shown at Gamescom later this year. He was happy to talk about car counts, but only a few new stages were shown off.
For the cars, there are two types. The Standard cars cover models you know from the first four Gran Turismo games. They used the original models but have optimized them for the PS3's shaders. Yamauchi says that there will be 800 Standard cars in the final game.
A lot of the new cars are included as Premium cars. There are about 200 premium cars making the total car count at about 1,000. Note that only the premium cars will have a fully modeled interior. Even the bottom side of the cars have been modeled as cars can now roll over in Gran Turismo 5. Physics-based damage will be applied to both car model types, as will scratches and dent damage. The displacement of body panels and such are only on Premium cars, though.
We saw several detailed shots of how these in-game cars compare to real ones. I actually guessed wrong in the comparison shots of a wheel and a car engine. One of the most impressive comparisons was of the interior detail of a racing car from Super GT 500 class. The very highly detailed interior was almost identical, including harnesses, wiring and even the panels. You could see that the safety wire coming off the parts has even been modeled.
Yamauchi joked that maybe they went a bit too far with the detail work in Gran Turismo 5: "We've kind of worked too hard. The models are actually better suited to the next generation of game consoles."
You'll find several comparison shots in our gallery below.

What the fuck have they been doing?
And No Yamauchi, you're game doesn't look that good.
In b4 they delay it to the ps4.
Can't wait to relive Rally New Zealand with a Subaru Impreza 555 or the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix.
I'm not sure how well Gran Turismo 5 will sell overall but for real racing fans its just the best and most complete racing game point blank.
I'm also excited about the Top Gear track being featured. Will try and beat the Stigs scores :P
Well that really sucks. A lot. But I can't stay mad at this game as long as it's got the Top Gear test track in it.
Or do they just mean 200 of the cars have rear seats modeled out? Still, the fact that they're reusing existing models with updated shaders is kind of odd considering this game has been in development since the dawn of man itself. I don't see why there has been such a huge delay if they're essentially reusing existing assets for a good portion of the game.
Hope the online is going to be good mainly though.
Hopefully gt can take the crown back (and justify all that development time) well just have to wait (some more) and see
at all.
Then the trailer came.
and ...
THE STIG.
WHO CARES ABOUT 1000 CARS. FORZA HAS NO STIG. GT5? STIG.
I am still super excited for the game but I don't lose my shit over the 1000 cars deal.
Honestly I think the job forza 3 did in that aspect was great as they have some 400 cars all with interiors(although some of the gauges don't work on a lot of the race cars).
Now if they include my 2000 Acura integra GSR along with the Type-R all will be forgiven.
I really hope GT picks up the pace from the time trial demo and Prologue. Both disappointed me, physics-wise. They both felt like driving on winter roads when you spun out.
I concur. I really feel that in GT5p the cars felt too light, grippy and floaty. The cars in forza 3 really feel like they have some weight to them, so powersliding or even turning a hot lap feels satisfying.
It will take me a while to adjust back to GT.
Wait. What does this actually mean? Are we looking at GT4 cars with respect to poly counts but new texturing work? GT4 looked damn fine - better than Forza 2, IMO - but this sounds somewhat disapointing. Then again, it's really the shaders/texturing that make alot of games pop these days. But still, somewhat dispointing.
Does gt have a livery editor? It's been so long since I've played one. Sold my ps2 (STUPID MISTAKE! Sure do miss playing the Warriors with my bro) shorty after getting my 360. The livery editor is my favorite feature of forza 3, I've probably got over 100 hours logged.
Planning on getting a ps3 (someday) and this game is deffinately gonna be purchased when that day comes.
polyphony designed the computer display for the skyline so it's only natural that they'd have a buttload of em in the game.
Not really. All this talk about the quantity of cars featured in the game is silly in the first place and it's PD's fault for falling for it.
Forza 3 has 400 cars and I barely have driven around 100, a lot of them only once. PD should have focused on a lesser quantity but make them all with fully modeled interiors.
Engine bay
Full interior deformation in an accident
Suspension, & chassis visible when panels get damaged/ripped off in an accident
Higher quality dashboard modelling
"All" (yes "all") models will have a cockpit/dashboard view.
This argument has been raging for months on GT Planet Forums.
The standard models don't have as good a damage setup, panels, doors, bonnets etc won't be ripped off, & you won't see the chassis or engine etc underneath, but they will still have cosmetic damage, & scratches.
Hope that clears thing up so that all the Forza fans can stop bitching about something they want to fail because it's not Forza.
I'm not dissing Forza, never played it, don't have a 360. Really, really looking forward to GT5 though.
You have only driven 100 cars in Forza. Which means? Nothing. Look, you can bitch all you want but what is there against more content? Especially a game you weren't going to buy anyway.
@The guy with the hat
Deep you say? I kept it deliberately shallow so even the people you can't count to 1000 can understand what the hell I was saying.
