E3 10: Downloadable fatalities a possibility for Mortal Kombat photo

There's no doubt that NetherRealm Studios' just-announced Mortal Kombat is a throwback to the classic, 2D-fighting feel of the series. But make no mistake -- from the game's slick visuals that bring the gory world of Mortal Kombat to life, to its support for stereoscopic 3D on the PlayStation 3, the developer plans to make the game feel as modern as ever.

Also on the table? Extensive plans for downloadable content. The demo NetherRealm is showing on the floor hints to as much -- the game's character select screen features a single box that says "DLC" on it. While they're obviously not talking specifics, the obvious conclusion would be that we'll see post-release support for downloadable characters. But according to the game's executive producer, Shaun Himmerick, downloadable characters could just be the beginning.

NetherRealm is building the title with the future in mind, designing it for full downloadable content support from everything from additional fighters, to new arenas, and even fatalities. Yes, there may be even more ways to slaughter your enemies added to the game post-launch.

Check back soon for more details on the title, which looks to be the most brutal in the series to date.

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Charging people for a finishing move is a low-blow if you ask me, give everyone the usual 2 or 3 fatalities a friendship or two...etc and keep it that way.

This is like Street Fighter charging people for some new moves or something :/

If it was free it would be a pretty neat idea.

Downloadable fatalities are a great idea. They're going to be expensive, though.

...Wait, what's that? No plans to charge were mentioned in the above article, so they could end up being free? Wow, would have thought differently the way everyone immediately started bitching about it.

I have not once seen "DLC coming" that is free unless they state it as "Free DLC coming" like with BFBC2's VIP code and all that jazz.

Better to be let down easily then have high hopes shattered!

Isn't it Netherealm? And unless it is free, I am not going to spend my hard hard earned government check on MOVES. I feel gay enough having bought different costumes for my SSFIV characters -_-''

bitches crying in the comments confirmed.

This is much better than the Capcom idea of "LETS CHARGE A SHIT TON FOR NEW CLOTHING! SF FANS WANT TO PLAY BARBIE WITH THEIR SF TOONS!"

GTFO trolls, this is MAH JAM!

@mix

I guess you missed the DLC that was announced for SSFIV that was announced around release that just came out this week, and it was free.

And if they charge... guess what? You don't have to buy it. :)

@Sanious

Well that a good thing but I don't have SSFIV, lol.

Yeah I know I don't have to buy it but I still like bitching about it when possible as I will be buying this game!

One of the Naruto games on PSN has a ton of free DLC characters to play as your sidekick...

I don't see a problem with DLC for games as long as it wasn't part of the core game. Removing iconic Fatalities or any of the other "-talities" and charging for them would be pretty shiesty.

Why not add general finishing moves like, exploding kittens, or ideas voted on by the game community, BigRed made some good points.

I think the next generation of consoles should do away with DLC. Or not do away, but rework it. Somehow tie it in with whatever monthly charge there will be for online access and have an option to pay like 5 bucks extra a month. Then whatever DLC is available... its yours. Not saying this is a perfect plan, but you get the gist of it. Something needs to be done I think. And I am sure there is a better way to distribute DLC.

Ideas?

They just said "Downloadable Content", people.

I didn't see anything about "PAID Downloadable Content". Granted, I expect them to charge for a good bit, but that doesn't mean it'll be all bad. Don't forget that games like Burnout Paradise had tons of Downloadable Content, and the majority of it was free. I know there are a good bit of other games I've seen while browsing PSN that had free DLC.

It's not all bad, people. And I thought I was jaded.

Didn't see anything about FREE either. Sadly very few companies appreciate/respect their customers enough to give them a little something extra for free.
Big wig game exec "hey this guy was stupid enough to pay $65.54 for a rehash of the same game he paid $65.54 last year, let's toss out 3 new maps and 2 maps from that last game for I dunno $15 and see if he's stupid enough to throw some more cash our way"
Over paid peon #1 "yes sir! That's an excelent idea! Let's call it a "stimulus package"!"
Big wig "good idea I'm glad I had it. YER FIRED!"

Soon, companies will start providing DLC for button combos. Mark my words.

This could actually work.

Given how many moaned about Super Street Fighter 4 not being DLC, I can get behind the idea of buying new characters post-release, be they paid or otherwise. Obviously I'm not going to pay if they bring in crap characters for DLC like Drahmin or Stryker, but if someone like Ermac found himself cut from the main game and came in as DLC, I'd be all over it.

Bonus fatalities I'd only get if they're free, I wouldn't justify spending a Euro for an extra move.

What about compatibility? If Player 1 has X fatality in their DLC and Player 2 never bought any, will they be able to play together online?
