I think that microsoft, instead of trying to be brave and push forward with something new and experimental, are trying to say "look, we can do what a wii does. Give us money instead of them"
It seems to me like they are actually scared of the competition.
Think about it, they didn't just show kiddie games. They appealed to children with Kinectimals, went after moms with Your Shape and video chat, and offered something for dads with the ESPN presentation, movie controls without a remote, and hot sweaty car porn. As well as showing how the whole damn fam can get together and play some Wii-type games where everyone can play without having to buy 4 controllers.
MS knew who they were going for with their Kinect presentation and I think in that regard, they nailed it.
If they continue to follow Nintendo's example, then all you hardcore gamers can look forward to some rehashed fan favorites for Kinect in about 4 years.
In many cases they bought the Wii and have probably stopped using it - hence the massive gap between console sales and software sales.
I'm pretty sure seeing that the Xbox now has the SAME games as the console they bought, played with for 6 months and forgot about isn't going to make people buy one.
Nintendo has already done it, they've already gotten non-gamers into semi-gaming and now they're pushing the real games to finalise the conversion. However microsoft seem to be going the other way.
Gamer? Here have the Halo and Gear sequels you've been expecting and shut up.
Non-gamer / Wii gamer? Come play Natal! Like the Wii but without a controller and in HD!!! It's so amazing that the fucking Cirque du Soliel are here to show you how great it is!!! (that's right, mesmerized by the pretty, now all of you hypnotised people go out and buy the new Xbox and Natal) - Shit we had better launch the Xbox soon, while the hypnotism is still in effect!
I for one will probably buy it (because after all, it's The Gooch!) but will anyone who isn't familiar with The Gooch's work buy it? I heard about Child of Eden a few days ago, watched the trailer and went "huh? WTF did I just watch?" Even after reading this and seeing the Ubisoft presser demo, I still don't quite know WTF it is. But it's The Gooch so I can't ignore it.
But what if I'd never played (or didn't like) Lumines or Rez? I wouldn't be giving this a second thought. This isn't the kind of thing that would work well in a Big Three press conference.
See the problem with kinect/natal is that you are already comparing it to the nintendo wii and you already realise that we will be getting rehashed wii games for it. They shouldn't be targeting nintendo's market with a 'we can make wii games' attitude. they should be innovating.
By the way, I know it's being released on the PS3 but will it be Eye/Move compatible? I can't find any mention of it in official material.
Well, at least it looks like they know they fucked up by passing up the chance to showcase Child of Eden, and they probably learned that E3 is not the place to go full-casual, see Nintendo circa 2008.
Regardless, Tetsuya Mizuguchi is doing it again, and I and excited.
Seriously, it's like saying this game will cost 60$ instead of a couple hundred. That's fantastic.
The game just looked like a screen of randomness with a guy who looked like he was seemingly just randomly moving his hand, sometimes it would correlate with aiming over something on screen, other times something completely different to what he was doing happened.
@Shael
Nintendo didn't dig any grave. They are swimming in money and drying themselves with gold bars. Like it or not, they nailed it this generation (in a bussiness sense) even if long time fans felt abandoned, and now, after hitting it big with grandmas and kids, they are trying to get that small minotity of "true gamers" back.
Related bit: Mondo Grosso (aka Shinichi Osawa) released a new album last week.

@Cynical Gamer
Child of Eden actually supports the Move, just for the record.
"They appealed to children with Kinectimals..moms with Your Shape and video chat..dads with the ESPN presentation..the whole damn fam can get together and play some Wii-type games..
MS knew who they were going for with their Kinect presentation.."
I think anyone who viewed the presentation knew as well. It's just too bad that NONE of these demographics attended, watched, or even remotely care about E3...Something MS should have learned from Nintendo's show last year.
Bottom line is, MS isn't just diving into this without thinking. It's all calculated. They said every negative thing they could about Wii in an attempt to slow Nintendo down, and when Wii's motion-controlled install base hit 70 million, they realized the mud slinging wasn't working, and jumped right smack-dab into Nintendo's game...4 years late.

I liked him on 1up, and still like him now. That other guy ranting needs to chill.
E3 is not for gamers, it's for media and to entice people to invest/buy products. It doesn't matter that the mainstream people that MS was targeting don't huddle around their computers like us nerds to watch press conferences at E3. The mainstream media puts it out to the rest of the world through clips and articles about it and Kinect ends up on the Today Show and Oprah. MS knew exactly what they were doing from a marketing standpoint which should also be obvious by how much money they spent on the Cirque de Soliel (sp?) event and the fact that they paid to broadcast it, commercial free, on MTV.
And if you all think they failed by not catering to the diehard gamers this year, go check out the top selling products in the video game department on Amazon.
Also, anyone that thinks that Nintendo came out with that lineup this year because they "learned a lesson" from previous years or are paying back hardcore fans for their loyalty, is being naive. They learned a lesson from how much money they made off of New Super Mario Bros. Wii and that is the ONLY thing that they care about. If it was you or their fans that they were doing this for, those games wouldn't be $50 games. And don't forget that first party Nintendo games don't ever drop in price.
