E3 09: Will we see Valve expand to other platforms? photo

It may be more likely than you think. According to Doug Lombardi, Valve considers the Wii to be a viable gaming platform, especially now that MotionPlus will be available. They're also pretty interested in the iPhone, with Doug claiming that input is a new revolution. That, of course, means that they're also intrigued by Natal, but we already knew they're tight with Microsoft. Still, we may soon see Valve games popping up all over the place.

It won't happen right away though, since Valve is a relatively small company, and they don't have a ton of resources to throw around to develop on multiple platforms. I always assumed that was the reason the PS3 version of Orange Box got very little support, although with a total absence of any Playstation 3 mention from Doug, I wonder if Valve and Sony had a bigger issue than I originally expected.

To be honest (and extremely selfish), I kind of hope Valve stays the way they are - small and focused. While I'm not ready to have a knee-jerk reaction and start hollering about how Left 4 Dead 2 means Valve has sold out and that working with Microsoft is ruining them, it does make me wonder a bit how teaming up with new console makers will change Valve and their core philosophy. Hopefully not at all, but you never know - all it could take is a massive buyout (*coughBUNGIEcough*) to totally change their direction.

Don't let me down Gabe!

I'm fine with Valve expanding to other platforms, as long as PC stays as their main focus. :)

Whatever they do, I hope their core philosophy includes Steam. It's one of the best things to happen for PC gaming ever, and Valve owns it.

The reason that Valve doesn't support PS3 is because Gabe Newell was a long time Microserf who believes (like the idiot he is) that the Microsoft way is the only way. Only the overwhelming opportunities to profit on Wii (huge install base) and iPhone (Apple users will pay for ANYTHING, even if it is available for free) would even make that idiot consider it.

The "bigger issue" between Sony and Valve is that Sony isn't Microsoft. No need to read more than that into it, because that's all there is to it.

It's actually amazing how good Valve games tend to be (though I have yet to play one that hasn't been highly over-rated) considering they're run by such a fat moron. Remember, this is the fool who had his source code stolen because he had his company running beta versions of Microsoft software.

I'm hoping L4D2 will be 20 or 30 bucks. That would be cool, I think I'd buy it at that price. Probably dreaming of course.

@hpv - did the guy kill your puppy or something man? Business practices aside, "fat moron?" Don't be that guy.

More platforms means more money potentially and that more money can be put towards faster HalfLife production.

That can only be good.

Again, the fat moron makes more money than you do.

Jealous that you're just not able to make bank like he does. You can admit it, I'm jealous of Kojima as well.

"According to Doug Lombardi, Valve considers the Wii to be a viable gaming platform, especially now that MotionPlus will be available."

He has been saying that for a couple of years now, that he likes the Wii and wants to work on it, but like always its just talk. If he likes it so much then why not put a game on it? Last time he was asked about the Wii, he said they're a small company that doesn't have the manpower to expand to the Wii yet. Making a team for a Wii project would take them off of their main projects, and they can't afford to do that. So either do something, or just stop talking about it. Because no one cares how interested they are, if they don't do anything about it.

It has come to my attention that Gabe Newell is fat.

Did anyone here about this? I was quite shocked, I thought Gordon Freeman's model was based off him.

What hpv said. Newell actually said he doesn't think the PS3 is worth it at all, which is just a way to not make as much money as you could be making.

Still, I'm one of the only people on Earth who thought the PS3 version of the Orange Box was just as good as the 360 version after they released the first update. I only had it slow down on me one single time, and that was it.

I've always been in the mindset that Valve should have dumped Orange Box onto Wii ages ago. If XBox 1 could handle Half Life 1 and 2, Wii should not have any trouble with them either, especially with that extra SD card space.

Portal especially is something Valve should consider, since its the kind of short puzzle based game Wii does well. And since its not all senseless shooting, some casual might buy it too.

Wii and Orange Box, its easy money to be made and less work to do porting it. Valve are pretty dumb, if they don't take advantage of that new audience.

I love my Orange Box on the PS3, I think it faltered mostly from lack of support and attempt on their end. Man up and admit when you fail to develop a game on the PS3 that is equal to the 360.

Anyway, don't really mind their games not coming to the PS3, got enough other games to play in the next year, multiplat and exclusive.

Was it Gabe or...Someone way up in Valve had launched a big diatribe against Sony's PS3 a few years ago saying the platform was too difficult to program for and how Sony fucked up, etc. etc. If they could only get passed the initial code Valve might discover how much more breathing room the PS3 has.

Valve aren't paying attention because they'e not that talented as developers.

Granted, they've made a flexible engine in source, but if you look at the games they've released on it since HL2, and the time it takes them to make these games, you'll see that many of their games are just about mods. Team Fortress 2 is CS:S with Cartoon Graphics and few other features, L4D is your basic shoot-em-up where enemies pop depending on how you're doing... Like Resident Evil 4, and L4D2 is basically an expansion pack. Portal was a funny game, but it wasn't groundbreaking on a technical, graphical or gameplay(ical? :P) level.

They're OK, but they're far from the Messiah the fans claim them to be, and they're reluctant to branch out into the Wii and PS3 because their game production talent isn't to the level where they can make games for those consoles.

I've always felt Portal, a game with a simple premise and controls (Especially considering it was a PC realease too), would be just what the wii needs. The wii is the land of simple control schemes with common sense (I just wish someone would tell that to the third party developers) and the orange box would be a welcome addition to the game library maybe even just Portal as a stand alone for a cheap price would sell pretty well.

I just hope my buddy EA bitch slaps Valve and ports L4D2 to the PS3. I too was fine with the job they did on the OB port. Actually I'm pretty sure all complaints came from 1Up at the time.

@HPV:
So you're admitting the PS3 is way small and not at all worth it because there's no real profits in it?

I don't think making an iPhone game would really too heavily tax Valve's manpower. It'd be interesting to see, actually.
Actually, Portal would work on the Wii. It's graphically simple as well besides portal recursion, Aperture Labs are far less detailed and expansive than City 17, the Wii could handle that.

Oh stop complaining about L4D2. Every other game company charges for the tiniest DLC, but Valve keeps giving out free additions many of their games. Now they're refining an already awesome game concept, with four new characters (who are far from the faceless drones of most online FPS games), five missions, four game modes, new weapons, new infected, new game mechanics, and more.

Millions pay for yearly versions of sport games with far less reason. Go bash them instead. Unless, of course, you're one of the people who pay just for a new number on the box. Yay NHL 2009! Now with individually modelled teeth on the players so you can pummel them out selectively!

Now, I wonder how many of the Gabe Newell bashers here have a BMI under 30...

I'd love to see them build an original Wii title from the ground up. They could do so much with it, it boggles my mind.

The reason Valve games are on 360, is because you develop for it in pretty much exactly the same way as a PC. Why should they bother to learn some wacky architecture like the PS3 just so a few whino's will shut up?
