E3 09: Will Modern Warfare 2 have less grenade spam? photo

When I sat down in a room full of proper games journalists like Brian Crecente, Adam Sessler and Nick Chester to watch some Modern Warfare 2 gameplay, I was quite excited. Not just because I was getting to see a very exciting FPS, and not just because there was loads and killing, and death turns me on. No, I was mostly excited for the fact that not a single enemy threw a grenade!

Grenade spam is one of the biggest bugbears I have with the series. It seems Infinity Ward has eschewed the respawning enemies, which was incredibly annoying, so does that mean they have reduced the grenade spam as well? I couldn't help asking once the demo was complete. 

"The grenades are randomly thrown," explained the team, after laughing. "Sometimes they've thrown them in the demo. It all depends on difficulty level, though. Higher difficulties will have higher amounts of grenades."

I think what that basically means is that Veteran Difficulty will once again be little more than a grenade dodging simulator, as enemies hurl infinite supplies of the little exploding assholes on your position. This is sure to thrill a great many people. This is sure to terrify a great many more. At least I thought to ask.

I got so tired of the grenade spam that I stopped playing the campaign on vetern about half way through. The way they scaled the higher difficulty was bad. It wasn't done right. That is the only complaint I had in what was otherwise a perfect game.

I haven't played World at War outside of the multiplayer beta, so I can't say much for how the campaign went, but I will say that CoD4's campaign, even on Veteran, didn't give me too hard a time with the grenades. Live the dev said, maybe it's just completely random. I just want them to counteract all of the grenades in the online modes. The ability to have up to four grenades with each spawn was cheap, and towards the end of my time with it, I was keeping as far away from people as possible just so I wouldn't have to hear the noise of a Martyrdom hitting the ground.

The nade' spam in WAW was a helluvalot worse. And like you, I found the veteran in cod4 to be fairly easy. Apart from No Fighting In The War Room. I hate that mission.

The grenade spam in World at War is bad on some levels, but I was able to train myself to throw them back pretty much instantly. Though, the odd one still go through. For some reason I can almost never throw one back in 4. It always explodes in my face.

Fuck. At least COD 4 was a cakewalk compared to WAW, which just seemed to have randomly spawning grenades along with enemies (I swear I never saw them throwing them, and I have no idea how they manage to get them at my feet no matter what cover I was behind). As long as this is better than WAW...

And hell, on Veteran COD 4 it wasnt the grenades that fucked me over, it was the enemies killing me in two hits, massive swarms of such enemies, and small amounts of cover (im talking the last part of the 'sniper' levels, and the level straight afterwards. Most frustrating part of any game i've ever played).

The grenade spam in multiplayer is much worse. I mean I can kill a guy in a window by cooking it so it explodes in front of his face. It's ridiculous. I just hope they make the nades a little more like they are in killzone. They're still lethal but it's very hard to cook it to kill someone unless they're standing still about 5 feet infront of you.

Ya know, I can't for the life of me remember any problems with grenades in the campaign. I'd always pick off a few guys, rush forward, rinse and repeat and it worked pretty well. Only problem i had was one section where you have to raid the 5 or 6 houses with infinitely spawning enemies. It wears on ones nerves when you're in the house and the clown car upstairs is still dumping guys on you.

As a gameplay mechanic the grenades are there to keep you from dawdling.

Also, do you think an enemy would spend his entire cache of ammo letting you sit behind a car for 20 minutes instead of using a more effective on you in a real war?

I totally agree with ajaxender, Egg and AgentMOO, grenades in CoD4 veteran weren't that big of a problem. They were in CODWAW though...

Sure CoD4 Veteran still makes me rage with the 2-shot deaths, but at least it's actually hard and you don't have to play it if you don't want to?

cod 4 vet was easy compared to what waw had. But they were developed by two different people yes? So they have very different ideas on how to level difficult AI

I never really played the campaign(single player mode) much at all. On multiplayer I didn't mind people actually throwing grenades but that Martyrdom perk was so cheap and annoying to deal with. You already killed them(played better/outsmarted them)and they are rewarded just as much simply because of a perk. So many people use it, you have to constantly sprint the opposite direction after every kill.

yeah you must be thinking of COD5 because COD4 vet was fine with nades. In COD5 I had 6 nades on screen at one time.

COD4 was okay with the grenades still bad but no where near as close as fucking WAW.

Oh my god so many greandes!

And seriously all the greande spamming is the main thing that makes veteran so hard. If you took that out it would still be hard but not as much.

I still havent gotten 1000 in WAW (Blowtorch and Corkscrew and the very last mission)

The grenade spamming in World at War was borderline illegal, it was that bad on Veteran. But I still managed to beat it after all that torture.

I'm glad they did this, but since enemies don't respawn anymore, they should have a limit on Veteran too.

I will agree with some of the other commenters here; I don't remember being bothered by grenade spam in CoD4's campaign, even on Veteran. Now, giving people the ability to spawn with three grenades did make multiplayer obnoxious, especially on Wet Work...

The problem is how prevelant they are. What IW should do is limit the amount of grenades that players find. That way it will encourage conservation.

As for COD4 multiplayer, I hated the martyrdom perk, not because its cheap kills, it's fun indeed, but anyone who has already thrown his grenade shouldn't have been able to throw another one produced out of thin air. If I had an extra grenade all along, I'd rather have thrown it where I liked, thank you. (-Oh, I'll keep this extra grenade in case I die. Lulz)

At least you could throw back grenades in CoD4. In R6V2, guys would chuck grenades through chain link fences, and they only thing you could do was run away. While getting shot at by a freaking helipopper.

Of course, R6V2 Realistic mode is alot easier than CoD4 Veteran. If only because bad guys in CoD4 could sprint and shoot at the same time. And if you hit someone, they would stumble, making it harder to finish them off. Also, shooting from the hip is garbage in CoD4, whereas in R6V you dont even need to aim with your sights.

Hope they test the multi player a bit better on this one so many glitches in 4, the graphic glitches that let you hide behind stuff and still see through should not get through testing. Hopefully wont see the return of insta spawn tubing and would be nice to see a rate of fire limitation on the weapons getting sprayed by desert eagles is getting old.

I always had a deeper hatred of the respawning enemies in CoD than the grenades, really. As long as they fixed infinite respawns it will automatically mean less grenades thrown at you since there will be less enemies on the field at one time. I'd wait to play it, but I'm pretty sure it won't be as big of an issue as before.

Whoa wait, they finally went back and dropped the retarded infinite enemies so I can play the game to actually kill people instead of running through the level as fast as possible? I'm marginally interested now. But not that much.

Grenade Spam is horrible. Especially in the small cqc maps. Getting killed in the first second of a game because the enemy threw their grenades high in the air at your spawn points is fucking gay.

Am I the only one who actually puts up with the grenades and beats the game on Vet? I will beat this one on Vet as well... even though it will be hell and i'll be shit on by grenades.

Holy shit COD 5 was hard because of grenade spam. You constantly had to jam the throw-back button just to stay alive. I can't believe I beat that game on the hardest difficulty. That is one of the hardest shooters I have ever played.

That cover would be better if it said Call of Grenade 4: Grenade Warfare.

Yeah, grenade spam sucks big time. I haven't played CoD4 but I own CoD:WaW and I think it's the same level Havoc Fang is talking about, Their Land, Their Blood, that I'm stuck on in Veteran difficulty.
