E3 09: What got the most buzz photo
#E3

Buzz. It's the noise a bee makes, and from that it has eventually come to also mean the amount of chatter and interest in something. Generating buzz is what E3 is all about for the gaming industry, and evidently, despite being something that isn't really measurable, someone has gone ahead and measured it for E3. A market research firm called BuzzStudy scanned the internet and found out which games/announcements generated the most buzz by looking at which stories had the most coverage.

The results are in the graph below and feature all the major hitters that you would expect. Of course Natal is resting pretty on top, but I'm suprised to see that Mario had so much more over Metroid. In fact I would have expected Metroid to be much higher on the list. Maybe I'm just out of touch. Activsion can't be too happy about D.J. Hero generating almost no buzz at all even though they displayed it on a really big stage, but if they want to look on the bright side, they did beat Scratch: The Ultimate D.J.

I notice it doesn't distinguish between positive and negative buzz, that would explain the vitality sensor being so high!

Also I think 90% of Bayonetta's buzz emanated from Jim Sterling.

@madfigs
Maybe! I did try to go out of my way to play Bayonetta 3 times, it had a flashy, big booth, and I really enjoyed the closed door presentation. IMO it was the best at E3.

I really think this "market research firm" is just wasting it's time. Most, if not all, of these announcements are no-brainers. Madfigs is correct as well in that there's nothing that separates the negative from the positive. For all we know, there was one guy sitting at a computer just Goggling everything and built a graph based on how many hits each one got.

Correction: 90% of Bayonetta's buzz came from Jim Sterling's PANTS.

What? Afrika, Nier, Bayonetta, Silent Hill, Heavy Rain, Crysis 2, Fat Princess, Just Cause, Ratchet and Clank, Agent, Ghostbusters, MAG, LBP2, etc... got almost little to no BUZZ. Hell, Guitar Hero 5 got more BUZZ! These numbers are off, I want a recount! Goddamn casual players taking over our game-floors.

Wow, Natal has almost twice as many people talking about it than the next thing on the list. Microsoft must be proud.

Positive or negative, it doesn't matter. People are talking about this stuff, it is in the minds of the consumer.

Why does Xbox twitter get so much buzz? I mean, it's a less convenient form of a website that is completely superfluous to 95% of the people that use it already.

I've looked at that chart about 20 times and I KEEP looking it over to see whether or not I missed Brutal Legend. I'm 99% certain that my eyes are not deceiving me and there is no Brutal Legend on the list. What's up with that? Also, I'd like to see Scribblenauts higher. That game looks completely amazing.

Wait there is no Brutal Legend.

WHat's going on?

It was one of the hottest booths in all the expo, maybe the hottest in EA.

Where's the lilac Hanah Montana PSP bundle buzz? Come on! That's all I'm talking about right now. Natal can suck my balls until it incorporates some tween girl color system.

I guess even my mum has heard of natal though and she doesn't know what a 360 is. She thinks it is some sort of weird sexual position cos she gets embarrassed and starts humming to herself really loudly when I start going on about it.

She knows Hannah Montana though. Everyone does. She's like a modern day Jesus. Except hot. I'm going to make sweet love to that lilac psp. Oh yes.

Of all the games I got to play and hear about, the one that deserves the most buzz is Split Second (especially since it garnered almost none). It's seriously the most fun I've had playing a racing game in years. DO NOT let it slip under your radar.

Exclusives:
---PS3:
Most of Sony's games.
---360:
ex.) Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Forza 3, and Halo 3: ODST probably got the most exposure for 360 at E3 2009.
---Wii:
ex.) Super Mario Bros. Wii, Metroid Prime: Other M, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Resident Evil: Dark Side Chronicles, etc.

Multiplatform Games:
---Modern Warfare 2
---Bayonetta
---Brutal Legend
---Assassin's Creed 2
---Batman: Arkham Asylum
---Blaz Blue: Calamity Trigger
---King of Fighters XII
---Tekken 6
---Battle Field Bad Company 2
etc.

There's a lot to see, play, and do at E3 2009.

Wish I was there to play all of those games at every booth.
