E3 09: Very interesting details on Warriors: Legends of Troy photo

Koei invited us over to its booth today in order to find out the latest on Warriors: Legends of Troy. Although there was nothing playable, I was able to speak with Koei Canada and discuss how this brand new action title will work. What I heard was quite surprising indeed.

Legends of Troy will indeed be part of the Dynasty/Samurai Warriors franchise, taking the familiar hack n' slash, one-versus-many style of action to the legendary battle featured in Homer's Iliad. However, it will come with a number of key differences that will set it apart, and hopefully help break the series onto the mainstream stage.

Hit the jump to find out all about it.

Warriors: Legends of Troy will be the first M-rated title in the Warriors series. While Koei's signature franchise has always steered clear of blood and guts, Legends of Troy will be providing a darker, far more brutal experience. The hack n' slash combat will remain the same, but there'll be some real violence this time.

Koei Canada is taking the reigns, but will be working with original Omega Force staff to help produce a game that remains true to the series' roots, while appealing directly to a Western audience. The team at Koei Canada is gearing this series predominately to the West, with the battle of Troy serving as an ideal premise for the new game. Unlike previous games in the series, Legends of Troy will tell a cohesive story from beginning to end, rather than assuming that people already know the source material and creating cutscenes that make very little sense unless you know the history upon which the games are based.

In terms of combat, we've been told that Troy will be very similar to previous DW titles pre-Dynasty Warriors 6. This means there'll be nothing like the Renbu system. The combat may be deeper however, with perhaps more similarities to popular Western action games in order to keep up the game's ambition of becoming popular outside of Japan.

You might also be very pleased to learn that Legends of Troy will also feature online multiplayer. Four-player co-op and verses battles have been confirmed, finally bringing the Warriors series into the 21st century.

Warriors: Legends of Troy is sounding very promising indeed, although we'll need to see some gameplay before making a firm judgment. If the violence, story and online works out well though, this could potentially by the title that makes Warriors a respectable series outside of Japan.

Is there an option to NOT have that stupid ad start playing on every page I open on Dtoid?

Here's something interesting about the Canadian development company under Koei.

I guess you won't have to worry about a western company making a japanese game.

No no no. Blood is so last decade. Gore, now that's the new black. Tearing apart someone's stomach and watching their organs and entrails splash on to the ground is ten times better than watching blood.

Excellent. Were there any heroes confirmed outside of what everyone expects? Achilles will be the new Lu Bu, as well as Hector, Paris, and Odysseus being given characters as well.

A modernized, upgraded Warriors game, with an ancient greek setting? What could go wrong?

Ok, many things, but still, this interests me more than a normal DW game.

Four player co-op? M-rated? This is gonna be awesome. I've also just last week started reading David Gemmells Troy trilogy so I hope to see some recognizable names. Damn this will be awesome. Finally, blood & guts in the battlefield!

Could be nice, but I really, really liked the Renbu system. Why they would dump it in favor of the much less user-friendly "Tack a charge at the end of your attack string" system is beyond me.

YEEEESSSSSS, I've been waiting for Koei to grow some balls and start up with a little bit of the ultra-violent.

Warriors with proper multiplayer and blood? That's it, gaming's done, no need to bother developing any other games. We have arrived at the promised land.

i buy all warriors game up to date(yes, gundam is fun too), and of all story to make a warriors game out of, they chose my favorite story, i know i must buy as long as its hack n' slash. i can do without online, it was hell for me to spend four hours to get dw:gundam 2 online trophy, i hate online mode with warriors game and it was hard to join a game and that make the online experience worst.

I've always found the DW game too much, because of the you vs hordes aspect. Yeah I know you love this stuff, Jim, but there's nothing worse than a developer stuck in a rut.

I think I'd rather see a game covering the whole of the trojan war, since the dumb film only cover a fraction of it.

Koei have talent, there's no doubt, but I still find their rehashing of this DW concept really tired now after many years. I'll keep an eye on LoT, but I really feel Koei could be doing so much more than they are. Sure, they tried Fatal Inertia (poor) and Bladestrom (average to good), but more is needed.

And with Wii Ware, PSN and XNA, there are now cheaper options to try out new ideas, without compromising high dev costs. Must it always be about the fighting millions? All the same, I'll watch this game.
