E3 09: Super Mario Galaxy 2 contains 90% all new content photo

Speaking to press in a small private Q&A session this evening, Nintendo visionary Shigeru Miyamoto told us that 90% of the content found in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be brand new.

After the development of the original Super Mario Galaxy, Miyamoto said the team realized there were plenty of great gameplay ideas they simply didn't have time to use.

"Let's make Super Mario Galaxy 1.5," he says of the original idea. But once the ball got rolling, they couldn't stop, taking the game in entirely new directions. In addition to new worlds, some new gameplay will include the use of Yoshi, as well as a drill that can be used to drill down through the game's spherical stages.

The game will contain roughly the same amount of content as the original, and with 90% all original content, fans have plenty to look forward to. About that remaining 10 percent? Miyamoto says you'll see some of the game's original areas and layouts, this time with different item placement and all new goals.

With New Super Mario Bros Wii shipping later this year, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will have to wait for a 2010 release.

"As long as there's none of my traditional over-turning the tea table," he jokes, "we should be on schedule."

I'm going to be up in this shit pretty fierce. I love Mario Galaxy. Probably would have had the same reaction as Chad did upon hearing the news.

Another Mario game sounds splendid, thank you very much. Although I can't lie, I'm more excited for New Super Mario Bros Wii.

I don't like it when great developers say their gameplan was to come up with a 1.5 version upgrade. Just because its Miyamoto he might get away with this. I just can't help but think Super Mario Bros. 2. It led to SMB3 but still.

I saw some of Good Egg used in the trailer so I guess we'll be able to the original locations for some quick nostalgia. 1 star each?

Now, could someone explain to me what the hell New Super Mario Galaxy Wii is? or did Chester mean New Super Mario Bros. Wii (likely)?

You know, I freaking loved Super Mario Galaxy, but I just can't get excited for this one. It just looks so similar to SMG that it seems more like an expansion pack or modded version than a full game in its own right. :/

I'm actually more pumped for NSMB Wii with 4-player co-op than this.

Are we supposed to be excited about "90% new levels"? I'm pissed about "10% old levels".

Considering that I just recently finished the Luigi side of SMG, I think I need this game to be in development for a long time in order to refresh my 3D Mario batteries.

@Kyo
The problem is this:

100% of Mario 64 was a new game, and a completely different experience than anything before it.

Sunshine was the same way.

These games were consoles, and years apart. Now, Mario 64 easily could have gotten a sequel, but they didn't do it, because they wanted to work on a completely new idea: the Sunshine waterpack. I can dig that.

But here, we have Nintendo already working on Galaxy 2 seemingly right after Galaxy. I have a problem with them releasing and announcing this game so soon, and this "90%" quote is just odd. 99% of games are 100% new content (lol).

@Mags

Seem par for the course to me, look at the Prime games, all 3 versions have been damn near identical.

If a game is good I don't have any trouble with them releasing a similar sequel especially when its to a game as damn good as Galaxy.

@Magnalon: There is a ton of new content. A lot of new power-ups (for Mario and Yoshi alike), new mechanics (that yoshi swing along with being able to swing Yoshi's tongue), and new worlds (that snow world looks more open than anything in Galaxy).

Like I said in a previous post, this is the Super Mario World of the 3D Mario games (and I don't mean because it has Yoshi in it). It takes what the previous game did and runs with it.

Like Chad said, SMG2 is like a new chocolate bar: the first bar was delicious and the second one is another chocolate bar, but it's as delicious as the first one.

I'm excited about this game because I loved SMG and I want more of it. Also, this "we had several ideas we couldn't add to the game" happens so often with great games, why throw all these ideas away if you can release a sequel that explodes them?

Thank you very much Miyamoto-san!
