Speaking to press in a small private Q&A session this evening, Nintendo visionary Shigeru Miyamoto told us that 90% of the content found in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be brand new.
After the development of the original Super Mario Galaxy, Miyamoto said the team realized there were plenty of great gameplay ideas they simply didn't have time to use.
"Let's make Super Mario Galaxy 1.5," he says of the original idea. But once the ball got rolling, they couldn't stop, taking the game in entirely new directions. In addition to new worlds, some new gameplay will include the use of Yoshi, as well as a drill that can be used to drill down through the game's spherical stages.
The game will contain roughly the same amount of content as the original, and with 90% all original content, fans have plenty to look forward to. About that remaining 10 percent? Miyamoto says you'll see some of the game's original areas and layouts, this time with different item placement and all new goals.
With New Super Mario Bros Wii shipping later this year, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will have to wait for a 2010 release.
"As long as there's none of my traditional over-turning the tea table," he jokes, "we should be on schedule."
sorry nick, your blog is awesome and informative! its just... its just ...
another mario game :(
Thanks Nick!
Now, could someone explain to me what the hell New Super Mario Galaxy Wii is? or did Chester mean New Super Mario Bros. Wii (likely)?
I'm actually more pumped for NSMB Wii with 4-player co-op than this.
I fail to see the problem with the game looking similar to Galaxy 1.
AND FUCK YEA MORE STUFF.
In b4 ur mar gay -_-
...
The problem is this:
100% of Mario 64 was a new game, and a completely different experience than anything before it.
Sunshine was the same way.
These games were consoles, and years apart. Now, Mario 64 easily could have gotten a sequel, but they didn't do it, because they wanted to work on a completely new idea: the Sunshine waterpack. I can dig that.
But here, we have Nintendo already working on Galaxy 2 seemingly right after Galaxy. I have a problem with them releasing and announcing this game so soon, and this "90%" quote is just odd. 99% of games are 100% new content (lol).
Seem par for the course to me, look at the Prime games, all 3 versions have been damn near identical.
If a game is good I don't have any trouble with them releasing a similar sequel especially when its to a game as damn good as Galaxy.
Like I said in a previous post, this is the Super Mario World of the 3D Mario games (and I don't mean because it has Yoshi in it). It takes what the previous game did and runs with it.
I'm excited about this game because I loved SMG and I want more of it. Also, this "we had several ideas we couldn't add to the game" happens so often with great games, why throw all these ideas away if you can release a sequel that explodes them?
Thank you very much Miyamoto-san!
