E3 09: Sony shows off new motion controller, not SIXAXIS 2 photo

When Sony showed off their SIXAXIS back in the day, it was pretty lame. Still is, actually. But, as Sony is announcing right now at their press conference, Sony has bigger plans for PS3 motion controllers.

It may be hard to see in the photos, but Sony is developing a motion controller that utilizes the Playstation Eye to track one-to-one movements of both the player and the controller. While still early in development, the tech demos shown reflect true motion tracking and included multiple types of games that can be enhanced from the motion controls.

While the presenter stressed that the appearance of the controller is not final and won't look as it does above, it is supposedly so precise that you can write with it. It wasn't stated when this controller will be released, but when it is Sony will also join Nintendo and Microsoft in the motion control arena.

LOL MOTION SENSING.

I like Project Natal a little more cause I don't have to hold anything, but I'm sure there are gonna be different kinds of games for both products.

I was pretty blown away by that part of the presentation. When he dropped to his knee during the archery part I was like WTF! I'm not big into motion control, but I could see myself messing around with this.

It looks like it could have some cool uses but... we'll see since it kind of depends on whether or not developers see anything in it.

It may not be as fancy as Natal, but it seems 1000% more practical for gaming purposes. The hardware doesn't seem like it would be that expensive to build either. If they can pull off the type of games they showed off in that tech demo, I'll be clearing off a shelf for a brand new PS3.

Project Natal does this a little better, even though I agree that this bit in the conference was pretty cool.

I dunno. It doesn't seem as innovative as the Eye-toy; which was the first motion sensitive controller, you know. If only Nintendo could learn from Sony's example.

I like how all the companies are now moving towards 1:1 motion sensing since I think that's the way the Wii should have been done from day one.

Seems pretty much all of them will be similarly feature-laden so, once again, it'll come down to who has the best games.

@SilverDragon: Nope, that was the first thing I thought, and from the look on the dude's face, it looked like he was embarrassed to be holding it.

Looks pants-on-head retarded physically, but seems like it actually achieves 1-to-1 control.

Wonder who's going to win the battle of

"Write on a Touch Screen with a Stylus : 2010 "

Microsoft where you can write on the touch screen but you don't need a Pen?
Sony with their DualShockSixaxisiimotestylus?
or Wii with their DSi.

This would be awesome, if they hadn't announced it before NATAL. Natal pretty much tore this crap apart. And who really wants another wii motion plus?

Ehh, although the technology looked decent enough I have my doubts about it and also the Xbox one. First since it is an extra peripheral that is not included with the system the number of games are going to be extremely limited. Plus out of the small number of games actually released for it only a handful will be anything more than mini-game collections that get old after 30 minutes.

I really think both MS and Sony would be better off holding off on these peripherals and integrate them into the next system. At least that way they would have a large enough user base to actually support any big budget games that may want to use it.

I'm skeptical of project natal to be honest. Seeing these live tech demos makes me more optimistc for this tech. Natal could be cool, but this looked so versitile.

So now we have 3 companies. 3 different motion control types. One uses a full camera. One uses a full device. One uses both. Whether this is a good thing or not, I haven't a clue.

I'm surprised none of them unveiled a motion control glove that allows me to strangle enemies, rather than point at stuff... Or in the case of the Natal, slap things. Maybe punch them.

They also seem to have an order of one to one control. PS3's Device seeming to be on top of one to one controls. Then Nintendo's Wiimote with the Motionplus peripheral. Last being Microsoft's Natal device, which - while still functioning, didn't look to be exactly one to one.

Im not really a fan of motion control but I think this is better than the pie-in-the-sky promises of Project Natal. Microsoft is big with promises yet they don't fulfill all of them, anybody remember "Surfer Girl"?

If the technology that MS and Sony have shown off is going to be expensive, it won't see the light of day, end of.

I am more curious as to what Nintendo will have to come up with to respond to that. They can't do anything for now, given that the WiiMotion Plus isn't even available yet. Nintendo R&D must be running all over the place to find some way to top those announcements. I was just expecting some "meh" motion sensing peripherals from the other 2 and a Wii 2 with only improved graphics somewhere down the line, but seeing where things are going, a Wii 2 with REALLY deeper gameplay possibilities and actually powerful graphical capabilities may be closer than I used to think. Maybe they could implement that Vitality Sensor in the controller from the get-go, associated with 1:1 motion-sensing controllers and body-reading cameras. That would be swell. And it's not like they need to have much scruples when copying anybody at this point, anyway.

The MotionPlus comes out in like a week, so it might as well be available now. I don't think they need to top these announcements, because the PS3 and 360 aren't built around motion controls --- They're just getting added. The Wii still has the edge in that department.

What's wrong with traditional controllers? it's not about the hardware it's about the games so I'll wait until I see some games to make my veredict.

While I thought Natal looked cool, I felt it looked too damn jittery. Like when the guy was turning around trying to show the bottom of his shoe it was spazzing all over the place. I dont see how you can play a game if the motion detection cant tell what the hell youre doing all the time. On the other hand I thought Sony motion controller looked a lot more stable and accurate, I can actually see real games being made around this controller as opposed to a few gimmicks here and there for Natal.

How hard would it be for Nintendo to come up with a new camera of their own? They're letting Ubisoft do one on the Wii this year, so who's to say that Nintendo won't take that idea, and make it work with the WiiMote itself? They have about a year, and a half to get something ready for Fall 2010, which is when Sony said they will have their remote out. Who knows how long it will take Microsoft to get Natal done and out.

This one looks like the most technically sound and precise. It also appears to be the most expensive since you have to get both a controller, camera, and game. But many people already have PS3 cameras, so good for them.

I really really really liked the archery in this demo.
I think this is definitely something I would buy, as long as:
a) the remotes come as a pair (or aren't 2X the price of a single one)
b) they aren't too expensive.

I have big doubts about NATAL tbh.
Seems too good to be true. :P

Natal was impressive, that is for sure. I still want to hold something though, I imagine the stupid camera picking up on someone getting up to the bathroom, or the voice software to work when you dont want it to all the time. Milo demo was NOT AI so people need to shut up about how cool that was, it was a very staged scripted event, even though its cool how you can interact with it by movement and facial stuff, very neat, but not as neat as some are thinking.

Natal seems like a interesting step, but moving your avatar around isnt anything impressive, i want to see this applied to real games, instead of party games.

It seems that Sony's motion sick will be a step in the direction Wii tried to make but fell on its face. This will do what even the motion plus can't do. The ability to have 1:1 movement was very impressive in the sword / arrow game demo, i thought that is what zelda was going to be like, and was so sad when all i was doing was shaking the controller. This should be interesting to watch, along with natal.

Sony shows their comitment to multipurpose gadgets. Not only will this allow you to play videogames, like wii-M+ and Microsoft's Natal. This device will also help you to aid traffic on busy streets!

its not the controller its the game? look at the games nowadays, theyre all repetitive, re-hashed concepts. the interactive aspect needs innovations for gaming to grow, and it starts with the controller, it has since day one.

owned.

Project Natal sounds a lot more impressive but I don't like the idea of not holding anything. I think of it like playing cops & robbers as a kid. Having a toy gun is more fun than pretending your hand is a gun.

Well, this thing seems to do stuff that is impossible with the Natal. I doubt you could play a first/third person shooter without a physical controller with a sensor in your hand.

Both Microsoft and Sony has presented different kinds of motion controls to us.

I think it was more interesting than Natal, with Natal they showed me a trailer with a chick choosing clothes... I mean, ok, I get it, Natal is cool in concept but it doesnt seem to be so great and i would look pretty stupid playing it. Sony gave me a tech demo and I was rather impress with it.

Not that Natal is not impressive, only that they gave me an ad video and I felt like they were not showing me the real stuff.

I prefer this over Natal. I much prefer having something to hold than pretending I have something to hold. Just might be the tech demo with the archery and sword play, but it seems like Sony would use this for more hardcore games compared to the casual stuff we've seen with Natal's presentation. So Chrono Logic's suggestion of a rail shooter where you have to move to dodge could very well come into existence. I remember playing an shooter at an arcade that was much like that. Fun as hell. I would gladly pay to bring the experience home.

@Chronic Logic: Surfer Girl was a rumor mill back in the day.

And I thought this looked really kickass... of course, I haven't gotten to watch the Microsoft version yet, but the fact that it tracked proximity and the velocity of the controller was pretty awesome. I especially liked the archery portion, though I felt the "RTS" applications were a little, well... sketchy.
