E3 09: Sony drops price of PSP dev tools by 80% photo

In this morning's Sony press conference here at E3 2009, a lot of the excitement surrounded the announcement of the PSP Go and its design and online features and capabilities, but an interesting change on the developer side of things was mentioned Kaz Hirai's presentation.

With the new 16GB of built in flash memory and downloadable games library, it seems that Sony is going for something similar to the Apple App Store. But, to compare, they'll need a lot more titles for consumers to download. Maybe that's why Hirai mentioned that Sony would cut the cost of the PSP development tools by 80 percent today. Surely his goal is to kickstart PSP development, making it easier for developers to jump onboard and get to cranking out games.

Get to work, devs!

I know that, as a consumer, the show isn't "technically" for me. It used to be for the retailers, after all. But as E3 has turned into a show for the press, to showcase all the games and get consumers excited and keep the games journalism industry going and feed speculation/analyzation, I feel like almost all the announcements are targeted at me now.

So when I saw this, I could not help but shout out, "Thanks, Sony! I really appreciate it! As an average consumer, I've been dying to get one of those for a long time, but those kits are just too much money! This is the price cut I've been waiting for!"

I'm sorry but if I want to play Phone games, I'll play them on my phone. Sony needs to either make the thing into a a phone or make it into a handheld gaming device. Not try for both and subtract everything that would make it one or the other. This PSP Go! is made of fail.

well this is awesome! now can someone come with the actual price? 80% sounds GODLY GOOD but what is the final price to get a devkit to start developing for the PSP?

The PSP Go is...ugh. Who would want to make games for that? Even reduced prices won't make people want to make games for that.

Hey Sony, how about you lower the price of your console like we all want instead of this crap.

*looks over Sony press conference* still 400 bucks? I'll pass.

This is an excellent opportunity and a good thing for the gaming community. Making dev kits affordable to the people with great ideas opens up the possibility of those great ideas coming to fruition, rather than being considered "economically unfeasible" or some such.

This actually has ME interested in the fucking thing. Anybody have any idea how much this actually amounts to though? My internet Matlock is taking a nap.

Crunshii, PSP Devkit used to be $5000, so this means it's now down to $1000.

This is really atrocious design.

"Hey, let's cram the start and select buttons into that little divot beside the left analog stick instead of putting a second analog stick here! Our customers do not need a second analog on this system, so we will taunt the ones who do!"

Hard lame, pathetic.

Sony will not sell me one of these.

I'm a little worried about how far away the nub is from the left side. No touch screen either, which is a shame... as one person put on another forum, I'm so glad that the screen slides down to protect the buttons from being scratched... :P

The PSP Go is...ugh. Who would want to make games for that?

Because it has bigger userbase than X360 and PS3 together?

Sony must do something to prevent piracy, and bring more 3rd party develeopers back to PSP. We need more games, who gives a f*ck about touch? I'm using my fone for browsing, I bought PSP for games.
aye, no second analog = fail

Second nub would make 50 million PSPs on market non-compatibile with future games. Think.

This isn't the PSP2 people!! Just another hardware revision. And one that I personally really like. Lowering the dev tools is good news and there is no way to spin it negatively.

We understand it doesnt have a 2nd analog stick. My god.I'm sure the PSP2 will have a nice new set analogs as well as a much of other new shiny things. But until then you will have to deal with the option to buy this.

@ Serboid make it so the different directionals on the analog mimic the face buttons, up mimics triangle, left mimics square, etc......

not too hard when you think about it

To be honest, as long as Capcom has a devkit and keeps pumping out Monster Hunter Games then my PSP needs are filled.

I'm addicted to Hunting Monsters.
