With the utter chaos that is E3 currently taking up virtually all of my free time, I won't be able to try out Red Faction: Guerrilla until this weekend at the earliest. The game came out today, and although our review won't be going up until after the convention is over, plenty of other reviews have. The verdict? Unsurprisingly good.
But strong reviews doesn't necessarily mean strong sales. Gamasutra bumped into Volition community manager J Goldberg on the show floor to ask his thoughts on a certain analyst's prediction that Guerrilla would fall short of expected sales.
"There are a lot of gamers who are aware of the game," he says. "Our community site is going nuts. With the acclaim that we're getting from the review scores, we know that word of mouth is going to carry this game."
And if it doesn't? Well, THQ has a backup plan: marketing the hell out of the game. It's not like I have personal gain riding on Red Faction or anything, but please, let this be a commercial success, instead of Imagine Babyz 2: Look Who's Talking Now.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Its nothing like the old red faction, hell red faction 2 felt more like red faction than this game does.
The only thing I like is that its back on mars besides that I'm very dissapointed.
It feels to much like Saints Row 2 on mars without all the crazy shit of course.
Why they had to go and make this a 3rd person open game rather than a FPS is beyond me. Since even the series excellent MP is gone now and replaced with this forgettable mp in it now.
Hopefully the story can keep me interested in it to finish it since nothing else is
I also hope it a success. The online is pure fun and a healthy population will help to keep people playing.
For the first time in a long while I totally lost track of time whole playing. I started around 2 and suddenly it was 6 pm and I had to force myself to stop.
It's by no means perfect and the story & characters coulda used some development. That said, I better go back a liberate mars.
I really cannot understand how anyone who spends at least a couple hours with the game would not totally love it. 1st person would not work at all with the type of world and gameplay they have created. This coming from a hardcore original fan and map maker. 10/10
Well, the former is definitely confirmed, but if the tunnels you want are through the ground, no such luck. It seems Geo Mod 2.0 has no "Geo" in it, at least from what I've seen so far.
That said blowing up buildings is fucking awesome. They collapse all purdy like. Also from what I've seen in the Gamestop preorder book thingy there aren't really a lot of weapons. The game is damn fun. Rating: 8/10
I feel like I cannot use half the guns, but that's what a Private Server is for. I am a little bummed @ the lack of Deep building holes a la RF 1, but it still seems like a pretty solid game.
Gonna get some more heads to tinker around with maps and weapons over the next week and beyond.
Of note, CTF modes and such will require you to play a match or two to unlock. I was grumpy until I saw how fast that mode unlocked.
As for a complaint, why is there not a CTF only Game Mode?!?!?! I loved RF 1 explicitly for CTF, and I'd rather like to be allowed to have a map rotation with CTF-only games, as it looks now, you have to make a custom server, then after the match, go back to the lobby and pick another map.
By "we" I mean Thunderboltgames.com, and I don't mean to plug.
