E3 09: Red Faction dev hopes for a 'word of mouth' success photo

With the utter chaos that is E3 currently taking up virtually all of my free time, I won't be able to try out Red Faction: Guerrilla until this weekend at the earliest. The game came out today, and although our review won't be going up until after the convention is over, plenty of other reviews have. The verdict? Unsurprisingly good.

But strong reviews doesn't necessarily mean strong sales. Gamasutra bumped into Volition community manager J Goldberg on the show floor to ask his thoughts on a certain analyst's prediction that Guerrilla would fall short of expected sales.

"There are a lot of gamers who are aware of the game," he says. "Our community site is going nuts. With the acclaim that we're getting from the review scores, we know that word of mouth is going to carry this game."

And if it doesn't? Well, THQ has a backup plan: marketing the hell out of the game. It's not like I have personal gain riding on Red Faction or anything, but please, let this be a commercial success, instead of Imagine Babyz 2: Look Who's Talking Now.

I think they should market the hell out of it regardless of poor sales or not. I mean, the more the merry right? Anyways, it still looks like a great game and I hope they get some great sales. Also, ostrich.

I hate this game.

Its nothing like the old red faction, hell red faction 2 felt more like red faction than this game does.

The only thing I like is that its back on mars besides that I'm very dissapointed.

It feels to much like Saints Row 2 on mars without all the crazy shit of course.

Why they had to go and make this a 3rd person open game rather than a FPS is beyond me. Since even the series excellent MP is gone now and replaced with this forgettable mp in it now.

Hopefully the story can keep me interested in it to finish it since nothing else is

I'm playing it now, and MAN is it a great replacement for those Anger Management classes I got booted out of.

I love this game.

I also hope it a success. The online is pure fun and a healthy population will help to keep people playing.

For the first time in a long while I totally lost track of time whole playing. I started around 2 and suddenly it was 6 pm and I had to force myself to stop.

It's by no means perfect and the story & characters coulda used some development. That said, I better go back a liberate mars.

Man, if someone would decide that contest or something about Red Faction here that could help....

Don't listen to any naysayers. Go Get It Now! It's 1st rate big action science fiction hotness. Atmosphere, Action, mission structure, mission variation, sound design and of course the physics. One of the most impressive games I've ever played, easily..

I really cannot understand how anyone who spends at least a couple hours with the game would not totally love it. 1st person would not work at all with the type of world and gameplay they have created. This coming from a hardcore original fan and map maker. 10/10

As long as I can destroy buildings and make tunnels with rocket launchers, I'm buying this game.

@Chronic Logic

Well, the former is definitely confirmed, but if the tunnels you want are through the ground, no such luck. It seems Geo Mod 2.0 has no "Geo" in it, at least from what I've seen so far.

Weapons seem a bit weak, can't really tell if you hit the enemies, max ammo for the guns seems low (though you might be able to increase that later I'm not sure).

That said blowing up buildings is fucking awesome. They collapse all purdy like. Also from what I've seen in the Gamestop preorder book thingy there aren't really a lot of weapons. The game is damn fun. Rating: 8/10

Word of mouth is working. Four people I know, when the demo came out, had no idea about it. I told them how brilliantly fun it was and the day after, one said they pre-ordered it and the rest said they'll get it.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this game. I was looking for something to help tide me over until MW2 comes out, but with the excellent destructible environments I';; probably be playing this for a while.

Playing the demo, I didn't think anything of it. Yeah the remote mines were cool, but that was about it. Then I got to the part where you get in a big ass vehicle, and just walked through buildings. I could have a game of pretty much just that, anything on top is just bonus.

The nano rifle has got to be one of the best guns ever. The effect is so freaking cool.

Although I can't get it right now, it has definately been on my to buy list since I was able to bust a building down with a jack hammer.

Wifey hooked me up with this last night and it's pretty cool. Single Player is actually pretty fun to bust shit up in, and the MP is nice too.

I feel like I cannot use half the guns, but that's what a Private Server is for. I am a little bummed @ the lack of Deep building holes a la RF 1, but it still seems like a pretty solid game.

Gonna get some more heads to tinker around with maps and weapons over the next week and beyond.

Of note, CTF modes and such will require you to play a match or two to unlock. I was grumpy until I saw how fast that mode unlocked.

As for a complaint, why is there not a CTF only Game Mode?!?!?! I loved RF 1 explicitly for CTF, and I'd rather like to be allowed to have a map rotation with CTF-only games, as it looks now, you have to make a custom server, then after the match, go back to the lobby and pick another map.

The reviews are good because the PR company handling it are blocking anything under 90% until the embargo is lifted this Friday. My review can't be posted until then unless we want to sever ties with them.

By "we" I mean Thunderboltgames.com, and I don't mean to plug.

To update my Bold text, there is a thread on the RFG community boards where they mention they do intend to open the playlists up more, once the game is more mature - they know what people like to play the most.
