E3 09: 'Rare is intimately involved with Project Natal' photo

Like Kotaku, we've been wondering what Rare's been up to as of late. As it turns out, the developer has been deeply involved with Microsoft's Project Natal technology. Microsoft corporate vice president Shane Kim recently gave them the inside scoop.

"They're doing an awful lot of work, even outside the traditional game space," he says. Any specific details? If you guessed "not at this time," come on down to receive your prize.

Kim did give a hint at what the developer's involvement might entail, saying "Rare is alive and well and really having a broader impact on the entire Xbox world than just doing the games they traditionally have in the past."

To echo comments I have been hearing from some of you, I'm not entirely sold on Project Natal. Is it strangely futuristic, and cool as hell? Absolutely. Would I want to play games without any sort of physical object to hold, like a controller? At this time, no. But that's not to say I couldn't be convinced otherwise.

It reminds me of the "Virtual Reality games" at some arcades back in the day that was just green screens and red you touching objects. It was cool at first but after 5 minutes it seemed boring as hell. I could obviously be wrong though.

Doesn't suprise me one bit. I guess they were from the get-go mind, considering one of the demos was via using their avatars.

I would like to reflect Chronic's anger, but don't feel I could do it so eloquently.

I guess it's OK as long as none of that "intimate involvement" involves Milo. Intimately.

I'm definitely not sold on the Natal shit. The Wii's controls have just been a joke and I'm not convinced that Microsoft and Sony's efforts aren't just going to end up doing the same thing, but with different sticks (or without sticks).

I just want to sit on my ass after a long day at work, play some games, chat with friends, and have fun... not dance around the room or stand in front of my tv playing with an annoying little kid.

I wonder how many developers from the "golden Rare age" are still working with them. Nuts and Bolts was cool and all, but it missed that extra edge that most of their games used to have, as in taking one gameplay common-place and pushing it forward. I really think they've lost the touch, if not by the creative beating they took from Nintendo, from losing import developers or from Microsoft's apparent indifference. They keep on saying "but we've got Rare. Rare is good. You love Rare games." Not so sure anymore.

"At this time, no."

Don't you mean, "Not at this time?"

Why is it that when Microsoft acquired a golden knuckle, they use it as a paper stomper?

As an advocate against motion controls replacing buttons, I would normally hate this idea, but my memories of the golden years of Rare cloud my judgment here. Cautious optimism is the order of business today.

*aside* Banjo-Threeie dammit!

OMG! I'm so pumped now that a first-party development studio is implementing the never before seen technology if you discount all of the other technologies of similar nature having come before it!

I mean, honestly, voice recognition from the software company that still hasn't been able to get it to work for their document applications? Facial recognition, which is so new in concept that my last 4 computers have had it. Oh, and let's not forget motion sensing of the body, which will always be able to read exactly one person's body movements regardless of other movements in the environment or body parts that overlap.

Man, who couldn't get excited about this new technology?

They probably should have kept that to themselves. If Rare's involved, it can only suck.

I'm no pissed that they're working on this instead of other games... I'm just hoping the time they put into Natal is actually worth it.

I remember when Rare mattered. Long time ago. About the time Microsoft bought them out.
