E3 09: No new releases for the Xbox 360's 'Games on Demand' photo

The concept of being able to download full retail games on a home console is not new in the least bit, but it's always a nice gesture to see.

The recently-announced "Games on Demand" service for Xbox 360 is either going to be a success or failure based on three things, in my mind: the number of consumers with a large enough HDD, the pricing structure, and which titles are offered for download.

In the demonstration Nick saw, the original Mass Effect, for example, was available for $19.99. Not necessarily a "deal," but not monetary rape either. As for what titles Games on Demand will have, we know that the service will launch with 30 games, but according to MTV Multiplayer, none of them will be new releases.

At least that's not the plan currently. Microsoft's John Schappert said the service will be meant primarily to give consumers access to games that can't be easily found at retail, siting Civilization Revolution as one such game. Whatever you do Microsoft, don't let this end like Xbox Originals did.

Not impressed until they stop raping us with the prices and hassle of their replacement hard drives.

In reality, the storage space isn't enough. Microsoft really need to allow for custom hard drives in the Xbox for this to take off, and I doubt that will happen anytime soon.

A price drop on the bigger HDs would coincide nicely with this Games on Demand business. Get on it, Microsoft!

On the custom hard drive front, I wonder if they could get a 360 to support a regular ol' USB external HDD.

Hey, if I have the HD space, I'd buy a new 'Game On Demand' day-and-date of retail release over disc anyday. Why?

* Less plastic to later recycle and less waste created. I'd be copying the disc to my Elite anyway, you know?

* For big games later down the road, I wouldn't have to do those midnight lines; I could still indulge my impatient soul by just hanging out at home, waiting until midnight as normal, but just flipping on the console and then downloading the game. Meanwhile, other guys are outside at midnight in the snow and rain.

* Additionally, it'd be less money given to GameStop and more directly to the developer/publisher, I'd assume. That's always good.

The only drawback to this is that the Elite HD is only 120GB. I'd not buy every game 'On Demand', but I'd like to be able to if I want. Here's hoping the next Microsoft console offers a terrabyte HD.

I reckon if they offered rentals on the games this service would really take off.

Also, I hope everyone plans to get Civilization Revolution when it's on there. The games excellent and I wants a bloody sequel.

1. Micrisoft needs to do price cuts on all HDD for the 360s.

2. Microsoft needs to cut the price of online game so as to justify for not getting the retail box copy.

3. Microsoft needs to poll their consumers so as to know what games consumer wants to download.

My 500GB HDD for my PS3 only cost me a hundred fuckin' dollars. How can MS do this? How can they provide such awesome service but not give us the space to appreciate it? I still only have my 20GB HDD on my 360; consequently, I use my PS3 more. I also use it because of the HDMI output :D

I think that these sort of services are perfect to combat the used games thing that publishers and developers have been bitching about. Say Gamespot charges Mass Effect for $15, "Games for Demand" charge it for $12.99 at least the developers and publishers actually get money this would also lead to an increase in sales.
Or copy Steam, that's one formula us gamers wished that everyone copied, weekend deals for the win!

yeah games on demand are stupid unless they feature fresh content or a cheaper price. either way I like my physical copies as they don't take up 6gb of harddrive.

If they drop the prices of retail titles, as well as larger HD's. I'm all over this like white on rice. I'm a big fan of Sony's results of digital distribution so far, and Look forward to the form of selling to become a much larger component in video gaming.

What a load.

I'm sure bestbuy and gamestop would shit bricks if Microsoft started selling new games straight to your console.
