I had a meeting with Bungie yesterday where they were showing off Halo ODST's campaign and Firefight gametype. While Paul Bertone (Bungie's Design Director) was running through the campaign, I noticed that the weapon pick up icons weren't showing the dual wielding options.
Turns out you won't be able to dual wield in Halo ODST. It makes sense why, as you're playing as a regular soldier and it's not easy to dual wield oversized weapons like the SPARTANs can. The ODST soldier also loses the ability to make use of Equipment items (Bubble Shield, Energy Drainer, etc). You'll still see Equipment items as the Brutes can use them.
In place of the Equipment is the ODST's VISR and it allows the ODST solider to see in the dark. The environment gets brighter with VISR and there's no limit to VISR's power. You could play the entire game with it on in fact. VISR is also a target acquisition system that highlights friendlies/enemies and takes the place of the motion tracker.
Check back for a more detailed look at Halo ODST's campaign and Firefight mode later today.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

C'mon, I can believe people are still standing for this series. It honestly doesn't deserve the praises it once had.
What about melee? I know back in previous Halo games the Marines could at extremely rare times melee enemy units, but would the melee in Halo ODST be an extremely damaging attack? Or would it be just normal weak attack? Killing an unshielded Elite with two hits seems a little weird.
Also, when driving vehicles and the vehicle flips over, can the ODST instantly flip over any vehicles?
Dual wielding ruined halo in general.
I'm glad they are taking out the dumbed down features of the trilogy for this expansion.
It will be interesting how Combat: Nerfed plays to the ravenous multiplayer crowd...
its a separate disc containing all the h3 maps.
the only new mp is firefight, you will have on the odst disc.
That's kinda weird...
Also I've noticed that a lot of people complaining about this game just seem to rag on Halo instead of looking at this game for it's own merits. Try removing the bias in your mind before you type.
I disagree. Dual Wielding made weak weapons stronger (except for the EXTREMELY weak Halo 2 Needler)
As for gadgets. They made Halo 3 more tactical (Bubble Shield to block bullet damage, the Energy Drain to force your enemy out of a certain area, or Regeneration if you wish to stay alive in a certain spot.)
Regardless, I am still pretty excited for ODST. I've actually been pretty "meh" about the Halo series, but I like the vibe of this one.
@Dexter: Dual SMGs are deadly.
In my opinion, gadgets were placed in halo 3 mp for newcomers, people who need it. Deploying "time out" cards if you will. There's nothing really tactical about sitting in a bubble waiting for a kamikaze stick grenade or shotgun boom.
It slowed down the gameplay significantly. Whatever happen to shooting each other. Halo 3 to me, turned into a first person boxer, nade spammer, with deployable baby bibs.
I can't see why they remove the opportunity to pick up and use equipment?? but all other changes are expected and I'm going to look forward to playing the Halo3 engine in a completely different way.
