Nintendo really seems to be pulling out all the stops this E3, with a slew of first-party titles being announced. Now we can add Metroid to the growing list of games with a Wii game entitled, Metroid: Other M. Some of us had heard rumors about a new adventure for Samus being announced at the show but the one thing I think nobody expected to hear was that the cherished franchise was being placed in the hands of Team Ninja.

A full 3D adventure, Metroid: Other M promises to go deeper into the story of everybody's favorite power-armored bounty hunter. It looks absolutely stunning visually -- as one might expect with Team Ninja at the helm -- and I can't wait to get my hands on it. I don't traditionally go in for the 3D Metroid titles but I'm going to have to seriously reconsider my stance on that if this winds up being as hot as it looks.

Currently, the title is planned to have a 2010 release.

Looks pretty good.

Does not redeem Nintendo from a press conference overflowing with crap. Not even close.

This is the last thing I expected. To be honest I wasn't really playing attention so I didn't even know it was Metroid...even after seeing Samus.

So this is like a third person beat em up Metroid game? Like God of War meets Metroid? I know all beat em ups are compared to God of War nowadays, and I hate that shit as much as everyone else, but this really seemed like God of War with a Metroid skin.

Seeing as this is now a team Ninja game I hope this means Samus will get a new cleavage based suit, boob guided missiles, and a dynamic health system where you can tell how hurt she is by the bouncing of her funbags.

We'll see if Metroid Gaiden is any good. I sort of hope it is but my hopes are not raised all that high.

2010 can't come soon enough.

I'm wondering how the game is going to switch between First-person and third-person perspectives though. The first-person parts look just like the Prime trilogy, but the third-person gameplay looks a lot like Ninja Gaiden or God of War. (Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.)

I'm just glad that sick bastard Itagaki is not part of Team Ninja anymore. Still, you never know, so I just hope they don't turn Samus into a slut that happens to be a bounty hunter.

Did anyone think Shadow Complex when watching this?

Anyway, Team Ninja is gonna make it amazing, knowing their track record with Ninja Gaiden and platforming combination! I'm not sure how I feel about Samus speaking, but it's good to know her story.

2 things I noticed in the trailer:

First, is it just me, or do her breast look smaller than they were in Brawl?

Second, at the 1:40 mark...did Samus just speak?
jackal27's Avatar
jackal27 at 06/02/2009 13:09
Samus has always talked. She spoke in all the older Metroid, particularly Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. I'm not sure why they shose to keep her silent in the Prime games, but yeah she talks.

"I'm just glad that sick bastard Itagaki is not part of Team Ninja anymore. Still, you never know, so I just hope they don't turn Samus into a slut that happens to be a bounty hunter."

Based on the 1up interview, all the important people left Team Ninja, so you could say a newbie dev team is going to produce the new Metroid or at least with no real background.

Damn! I don't know how to feel about this. When I saw "New Metroid" on the frontpage I was pumped to see a video of classic 2D action with sweet-ass sprites hopefully made by Deer Force. Then I got this.

Gotta agree with Zarathustra. Team Ninja has never impressed me. Their games are overall flashy with not much substance. I'm not sure they are the guys to tackle a series that is based around claustrophobia, loneliness, and atmosphere like Metroid (as MCChampaign-Millionaire already sort-of said).

I can't say I'm looking forward to this. Everything I loved about the Metroid series seems to be gone in favor of flashiness as Team Ninja knows how to develop. I'd be very surprised (based on this footage) if it turned out to be a good Metroid game (it might be a good game, but I'm not sure if it will be a good Metroid game).

I want to be excited for this, and I would be if this were coming from Retro. It looks like an interesting blend of 1st person and 3rd person elements. I just hope Nintendo keeps Team Ninja on a short leash, as they've never really seemed to create games that were much more than flashy.

Well doesn't look as breath-taking stunning as Prime but it'll do as long as it's at least half as decent as the metroid awesomefest that is Prime Trilogy coming out later in the year

Looks like a mix of third person crazy awesome (I'd imagine something similar to Ninja Gaiden) and the first person shooting we've seen with the Prime trilogy.

EPIC.

Ooh, a joint development project. You'd think that Team Ninja would be making more Ninja Gaiden games. I guess without Itigaki they must've moved on to other projects. This game looks great anyways, although the action is going too fast to know what's going on.
