With all the fancy 3D games and their complicated controls coming out lately, sometimes it is nice to see something with some clean, simple sensibilities in mind. This refreshing, retro way of thinking is never more evident than in the just announcedNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.
When I first heard the announcement of this game at yesterday's Nintendo press conference, I have to admit, I was a little nervous. Because of its decidedly uncreative name, I thought New Super Mario Bros. Wii was nothing more than an upgraded port of the Nintendo DS version of New Super Mario Bros.
Luckily, I was wrong, as New Super Mario Bros. Wii is in actuality a brand new 2D Mario platformer with similar, but much shinier, graphics and some of the same tried, true, and fantastically designed gameplay of the Nintendo DS original. Even better, this new game allows for four-player simultaneous play throughout its many, classic Mario levels.
I will be back with my hands-on impressions of this remarkably charming and super fun game later today. For now, check out the above trailer that reveals two new Mario power-ups (propeller helmet and penguin suit!) and look in the gallery for some beautiful screens.
Who would have ever thought New Super Mario Bros. Wii was going to be one of the most exciting (and most entertaining) games at E3?

Chad enjoys punching old ladies in the face, Super Metroid, Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES (best system ever!), Final Fantasy VI, Day of the Tentacle, Shadow of the Colossus, Mother 3, Beyond Good & Evil, Contra III, Valkyria Chronicles, Punch-Out!!, Half-Life 2, and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Meet the rest of the team
It looks like it might control similarly to New Super Mario Bros. on the DS. Let us know if it's like that, or more like the originals in your hands-on, Chad.
It's been a long time since Nintendo has truly pleasantly surprised me as most of it's games are expeted and the name just says it all but I glad this isn't just a wiimake of a DS game and actually a new game altogether
Iam stoked. I would love to see this on a better engine though. COuld you imagine this on the 360 with multiplayer on live, and achievements. Mario in hidef would be amazing. Oh well
I'm really enjoying the fact that Nintendo is actually catering towards a few of its "Old School" fans with the 2-d-ish retro-ish feel. I was kind of fading away from Nintendo for a bit, but for now... They got me
It looks like Mario...again. This is hardly a breath of fresh air, it's as stale as my pants. I don't think all these Fancy 3D games with complicated controls are really coming out. Sure there's been a lot of new releases but there's also been a ton of retro themed or altogether retro games coming out.
How many times can we play mario? And at the press conference they said their awesome brains invented four player? Are they joking? Maybe nintendo were right, maybe all "Hardcore" gamers want is the same old shit over and over. Can't you just go back and play the old ones?
Are we just trying to find something to be happy about now or what? Someone send Arnie back in time to save us from Nintendo's regurgitated worms.
I actually got a LittleBigPlanet feeling from some of the levels shown later in the video. Then again, LBP gave me kind of a Yoshi's Island feel at times, so...
It's a breath of fresh air because it's a fun side scrolling platformer in a E3 of gritty FPSs and TPSs. Galaxy was fun, but I prefer my Mario from the side. I really wish they would use the Paper Mario design instead of this 2.5d bs. Sprites have way more character than 3d models.
Apart from a few little things E3 this year was the same as every other year. I made a comment about this in the "vote for your favourite conference" article. I'm getting pretty tired of playing the same games. Now I'm older I have drastically reduced my games purchases and it's not because of money problems. It's because most games just aren't worth it.
Punchout was great, nostalgic but actually a pretty good game. I welcome more Left 4 Dead stuff because that's a great game too and there hasn't been enough for me personally yet, that's because it offers something a little new at least. Modern Warfare 2 is, what, the 6th COD game? Halo ODST with the announcement of Halo 5/Reach coming. Things have (or at least should have) their limits. This game is, at best, trying to be a nostalgic distraction.
I urge you to listen to a great lecture by Jonathan Blow as to why most games aren't as memorable or affect us in the same way great books or films.

Simple fun is great at times, but I'm starting to crave some more imaginative and meaninful experiences and there are developers doing so but not enough.
Put it this way; Are you still playing with your paddle ball? What about ball in a cup? How about a hoop and a stick? Hoola Hoop? Marbles? YOYO? Hopscotch? Maybe you do ocassionaly. I should ask whether you get excited about the thought of playing with those? No? Then why the hell are we still doing it for sidescrolling mario games?
mario remembered where the house that built nintendo is, in 2d. i have no problems with his returning, i just want to control peach again like smb2 and watch her float dowm from the top of the screen. smb2 has a more multi player feeling to it and could work really well.
Probably most people here didn't have a gamecube, 4 friends, 4 gbas and a copy of Zelda 4 Swords, this is exactly that but with platforming instead of puzzles. There will be a very fine line between you needing your friends to overcome some obstacle, and you screwing them over for more points.
A more contemporary example would be LBP, but with a good (jumping) physics engine and 80 levels made by the experts of 2D platforming.
Can't wait! After hearing yesterday that there wouldn't be Wi-Fi, I got kinda sad, as I dont really have any gamer friends in the small town I live in. But this trailer implies that there will be 1P mode as well, so I'm happy!
I hope that there are obstacles in the game that would require serious cooperation as opposed to just having levels that you just race through with multiple players. Maybe only one person has a propeller hat and has to give a ride to the other three across a bottomless chasm, or maybe you have to lift and throw characters up a mountain while lava chases after you.
Yay!! Sssh, haters, as NSMB on DS was some of the best, 'master-able' platforming in a while - top stuff, and a wonderful blast down memory lane. With Muramasa, the demon blade, and this, I now HAVE to get a Wii. Plus, to play through Super Mario Galaxy.
@megaStryke
thats my only worry for this game, if there is no coop platforming bits all the extra people playing will feel pointless and maybe even annoying.
But they said it's playable in 1 player so I dunno...unless levels change a little when multiplayer is activated, bigger bosses, sligtly different layouts.
Also am I the only one who fucking hates the idea that these are called "new super mario bros" and not just.. oh i dunno.. mario bros 4 and 5?
how long can they keep calling them "new"? I don't like having to reffer to it as "new super mario bros." kinda obnoxious. FUCK i feel like such a debbie downer right now.
I'd probably complain about how this is rehashing and further make a fool of myself, but come on, I get to ride Yoshis once again. I can't hate against that.
I'm glad somebody mentioned Yoshi. that guy is awesome. I'm actually more excited for the game after watching this trailer. I was kind of unsure after they showed it yesterday.
Also, I hope there's more character selection. We don't need one Toad, let alone two.
maybe its me but i actualy didnt liked the new super mario ds that much.
i alway wanted a new 2d mario for ages, but somehow i was disappointed with the 2d ds one
i felt that the controls where a little off the past 2d mario games , power ups where worthless and not fun or well used in the levels and the level design wasnt very exciting andsort of messy for most levels.
dont get me wrong i love mario games, mario galaxy destroyed my expectations of a mario game.
hope this one will work better for me then the ds one , but i must admit i like what i have seen so far.
pinguin suit ftw

There are about 300 FPS's coming out for every system, and you whine when one classic platformer gets announced.
This will be good.
You know you're a huge nerd when a sequel is announced and your wish list involves improving physics rather than new content.
I liked the one for the DS but this one really looks to raise the bar on fun :)
Was this Nintendo developed, or did the mysterious outsource team that did "new" on DS?

or should i say KYOSUKE NANBAWWWWWWWWW
<3
And this shit looks so goddamn epic it's ridiculous.
Out of curiosity, what makes it not worth getting on the Wii?
