Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

I don't own a PSP -- an oversight that I have planned to resolve this year -- and this game is giving me more of an impetus to get one. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is easily my favorite entry in the series and it's exciting to know that there's going to be a direct sequel to it coming, even if I have yet to possess the hardware to run it.

Up above is the trailer that we've seen at the Sony press conference and again at Konami's event. Down below are screenshots. You should totally check out both. Even if you've watched the trailer before, that last bit of humor Kojima threw in is comedy gold.

I have a question for the Dtoid readers: Do you think it's possible that this whole "Love Pack" cardboard box thing might point towards a cooperative mode in the game? I can't seem to shake that thought from my head right now. Speculate away!

As soon as a saw the four snakes some sort of co-op has to be involved

I don't think that it is co-op I just think Kojima doesn't want to show all of the characters just yet. Seeing as how Big Boss and Grey Fox establish Outer Heaven I assume Grey Fox will be in it but Kojima doesn't want to show him off yet.
Of course I could be wrong but I doubt that it will be Co-Op.

Honestly, I think this was one of my favorite announcements this year. I love Big Boss's stuff.

Lame double posts but....

"1974:
August 9: President Richard Nixon resigns.
NEST (Nuclear Emergency Support Team) is set up by President Gerald R. Ford to be "prepared to respond immediately to any type of radiological accident or incident anywhere in the world".
The Events of Peace Walker: The army without a government, Militaries Sans Frontieres, commanded by Big Boss, help Costa Rica defend themselves from an unknown force.
1975:
The Mozambican War of Independance ends with Mozambique attaining independence from Portugal. But the Mozambican Civil War begins. It's a war between the ruling party, the Front for Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), and the Rhodesian/South African-funded Mozambique Resistance Movement (RENAMO).
Frank Jaeger returns to Mozambique and participated as a soldier for the RENAMO.
Big Boss rescues Frank Jaeger from a FRELIMO prison camp in Mozambique."

Yeah, WTF? Why has everybody forgotten MGS: Portable Ops? That game was my JAM, son. More Big Boss action on the PSP has got me excited.

Portable Ops wasn't a direct sequel made by Kojima, it was a spin off, Kojima said this at the conference.

Then taking them online to fight fools over WiFi - Fuckin Yeah!

I've got to dig that UMD out, and prise the Monster hunter UMD from my Monster Hunter loving PSP1000.

Um, tbh, the whole 'four Snakes with slightly different clothing all infiltrating together and joining up to take on a boss' seems, to me, to be a bigger hint at co-op play. The box thing all but assures it.

Still not a Direct Sequel.

@PenKaizen

It actually was a direct sequel to Snake Eater, but you're right in saying that Kojima didn't work on it. But it IS still a part of the main storyline taking place directly after Solid 3.

Ooooh man, this is gonna be SO SWEET.

So, this being the "missing link" means we can dive into the first Metal Gear on MSX immediately after this, yeah? Finally, the entire story!

I'd love for this game to have co-op but I agree with the sentiment that it isn't Kojima's or MGS' style, so I won't hold my breath.

This game may be my only reason to get a PSP, now--I'd love to see how things got started with Naked Snake and the three clones.

I dont even know what a direct sequel is anymore..

I wasn't a big fan of the mission structure in Portable Ops, so i'm hoping this will be more of a seamless experience than that. I'd rather see the journey unfold like in MGS3, than be sent into a bunch of smaller objectives.

That'll be my perfect PSP game!

If it is anything like Portable Ops, I'm buying this on day one. That game was the shit.

YES YES YES.

MGS3 was my favorite entry in the series, so a DIRECT sequel is an amazing announcement.

I'm excited for this but considering I've never played a MGS game, including 4 for the PS3, it must be for the PSP Go :p. I guess I'll be downloading this Oct 1st.

@celicacrazed:

The first time they mentioned this game but when they talked about it later they said it was coming out spring 2010. Plus kojima was talking about it like he hasn't even really started writing the script. The original mgs is coming out on psn June 18th though so save $9.99 for that.

Sorry for the double post but my last was confusing, let me clarify. Jack tretton said you could dl peace walker october 1st with psp go launch, but later reports said peace walker is coming out spring 2010.
