E3 09: Left 4 Dead 2 officially announced photo

Just moments ago, Valve revealed a brand new trailer for Left 4 Dead 2 at Microsoft's press conference. Gee, what a surprise!

L4D 2 will be out November 17 and is set to include melee weapons such as chainsaw, frying pans, axes, baseball bats and more. We're also going to see a deeper co-op mode and an advanced AI Director which will now be able to change the weather, world objects and pathways in addition to changing the enemy population.

Check back in a little while as we'll have the teaser trailer showing off some of the melee combat. Also, I TOLD YOU ALL, SUCKAS!

Check out our live blog for more on the Microsoft E3 09 press conference going on right now.

VALVE ANNOUNCES LEFT 4 DEAD 2

Sequel to Best-Selling Co-op Thriller Coming This Holiday

June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer thriller.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles.

"A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."

Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.

Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.

Supported by a $10+ million marketing campaign, Left 4 Dead has sold over 2.5 million retail copies since it was released in November of 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is targeted for release on Xbox 360 and the PC on November 17, 2009, and will be launched worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across TV, Outdoor, and Online.

"Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing on two platforms during holiday 2008," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising programs than the original."

Left 4 Dead 2 will be featured as the cover story on PC Gamer and Official Xbox Magazines this month. For more information, please visit www.l4d.com

Agreed, that's announced way too soon. I mean we just got the Beta Dev Tools for L4D1.

Ah well, hopefully this is better than the first.

Changing pathways sounds like just what the series needs. I was going to write something up on it earlier. Maybe I still will.

This should have been an expansion. Although I loved the first one, unless this one shows a larger number of new features than what is listed here I will likely hold off until a price drop.

This is a surprise. Valve, one of the biggest perfection-time-takers, taking ONLY A YEAR?!

Excuse me while I play Starcraft 2, Duke Nukem Forever and...Screw it, sarcasm does not cover this.

What the hell?! They take SO LONG on every single game they have ever produced, and on one of their most AMAZING games they have released, the sequel is only 1 year in development?! It better be cheap...

They couldn't just release this as an update for the first game?

Sequel's coming way too soon. TF2 gets all sorts of game modes, maps, and class updates, and it's been out way longer. Why can't this be an update?

Fucking show HL2 Episode 3, you assholes.

"the left 4 dead team just lost all of my respect. tf2 team, rock on."

I'm waiting for more info/price point/etc. before I make this kind of judgment. Regardless, how do we know they were really the ones to make the decision?

Starcraft 2 is essentially following the same model. Basic game with sequels coming once a year for a couple years.

doesn't valve self publish, ea just handles the packaging and such? Also l4d has gotten such little attention in comparison to tf2. 2 campaigns that many expected at launch and a new mode? We just now got the sdk!

I agree with what's been said. Far too soon, and what with the time it took to release the first and the bugs with that initially, I don't see how they could polish a game like this that quickly. Of course, they could always pull a "Mega-man" and add one or two new features whilst keeping essentially the same game, with the same graphics. But that would just be a slap in the face for those of us who anticipated and bought the original at full price...

This isnt surprising. L4D does not strike me as a totally finished game; its just lacking content. No melee weapons, six (very standard) weapons, and just four (admittedly well designed) campaigns, leave me thinking that it was a test of the concept of the game, and in particular the A.I director.

Clearly, the test was very successful, but that doesnt excuse this bullshit. I paid full price for a polished beta, I dont want to have pay full price less than a year later for the finished game.

So they release L4D for 60 with 4 campaigns and 2 VS maps, take almost 7 months to release the other 2 VS maps and a crappy survival mode and now they announce the sequel.

Fuck you Valve.

I just want to congratulate Destructoid on proving everybody wrong. I just listened to the latest editions of the Bombcast and ListenUP where they totally laughed at Destructoid for believing this rumor, and when I saw the L4D2 logo pop up, I was like "dude I can't wait to watch Dtoid chase down all the other journalists once the press conference is over and laugh in all the other journalists' faces."

Please tell me you guys are planning on finding the 1UP and Giant Bomb guys and everybody else and videotape them apologizing for doubting you.

Zombes in da sowf? I'm all for this as well. The game came out Nov 17. I think that Valve still had some tricks up their sleeves taht we're not aware of. This advanced director sounds intense.

Well, I was hoping this wasn't going to happen, but now that it is, there isn't anything we can do about it but just enjoy what Valve gives us. We're talking about Valve here guys, they do make awesome games, so maybe it's a little too soon, but they can deliver a great experience as well.

Don't let this game catch BioShock 2 syndrome, it's going to be great. Valve doesn't just pump out sequels for a quick buck. Hell, this might've been in development longer than we think. I'm looking forward to it.

Christmas 2009, a rickety house with no heating, a mother and a child beneath a bare Christmas tree.

"Here Johnny," says the mother, "I know times are tough, with the economy and all, but I sold Grandma's old brooch so I could get you this."

Johnny tears the cheap wrapping paper, little grubby hands working fast. His mother stares with excitement as the green plastic case is revealed.

"Left 4 Dead, right?" she says with a smile. "The guy in the store said it just came out a little while ago. Do you like it?"

"Fuck you mom I want L4D2"

Unless this has 4 player split screen there is no point in releasing a second one so soon. The only reason that I don't own the first one is because I am so pissed that they only have 2 player split screen for a game that is built for 4 players.

The pathway changing seems like it will break up the repetition quite a bit, but the melee weapons are a bit concerning. I mean chainsaws? That's kind of imba and will make it too easy for the survivors. I'm a little disappointed to say.

How can all of you say this is horrible until we get to play it. For all we know this is going to be a great game, and last I checked I'm happy when great games come out.
They took forever on games to come out before and everyone complains, now they don't and everyone still complains even though they've only seen one trailer.

Like most people, I am a little disappointed that a sequel has been announced so soon, but I don't need to pick it up on day one. I think L4D is still a lot of fun and there are a lot of other good games coming out this fall to keep us busy.

Who cares? I played L4D for months and it was well worth the money. Now it's grown kinda old. I'll gladly buy a sequel if it has new weapons and infected, as long as I'll play it just as much.

Valve (1): "I have an idea, instead of putting this out as a full game, we'll cut it in half, sell it for $60 a pop and make bank."

Valve (2): "Great idea, 4 hour games with super special 'anytime spawn' will definitely be a hit, despite the fact that it's the same basic pattern everytime!"

Cobra Commander: "Yes!"

Skeletor: "Brilliant plan."

Shia Lebouef: "I still get work, somehow. It's amazing."

Michael Bay: "I got your back dude. I suck, but I got your back."
