E3 09: Hands-on with The Conduit singleplayer photo

I was ambivalent about The Conduit before playing it. It's presumably meant to be the Wii's version of Halo: a space-centric FPS that looks pretty much like every other space-centric FPS, apart from the fact that it's remarkably pretty for a Wii game and sports some supposedly cool motion controls.

After playing the game, my opinions have not changed.

Hit the jump for more.

The Conduit feels like a good game. It is not mindblowing, or innovative, or life-changing, but it's goddamn good. The controls feel crisp and can be customized in pretty much any way you'd imagine (you can change your turning screen, your bounding box, aim sensitivity, etc). It's the best FPS I've ever played on the Wii, ever.

But that's not saying much, and that's probably what you were expecting. There aren't really any surprises to be found in the singleplayer campaign so much as just a totally functional-if-generic FPS that won't surprise you, but also won't disappoint you.

If you like games where you shoot aliens, you will enjoy The Conduit. If you expect it to singlehandedly revitalize hardcore gaming on the Wii, you're probably gonna be bummed out.

fair enough. competent FPS + excellent controls + above average multiplayer makes this a must-have for me

Well maybe it needs multiplayer to make it really sink in even so I play games for the crazy good singleplayer I replay games for the multiplayer so it looks like I probably won't be doing either with this

Not a shock, but given what The Conduit is supposed to do, it seems to do it well. At the very least, it's proof you can do an original FPS title on the Wii and have it be good.

well a game does not have to be innovative to be good. It just needs to do things right and make it fun.

If your reading this and don't know this game has online multiplayer.
That is one of the selling points.

Thanks for that in-depth look Rev.
>_<

Couldn't you elaborate on a why it wasn't any different or what you did like. All you've said here is that nothing is different.

I've got it pre-ordered so I'm glad to hear its "goddamn good".

Single player should be fun but I'm really looking forward to multiplayer.

FNF anybody?

Rev likes something.

This game MUST be good.

Unless the devs are some indie games which explains everything.

Isn't this the only fps on the Wii?

Anthony, why are you trying so hard at being negative? I can see that you enjoyed this; is it so wrong to feel good playing a competent and fun Wii FPS?

Ambivalent article is extremely ambivalent.

'It's goddamn good' and 'it's the best FPS I've ever played on the Wii - but that's not saying much'? While I agree that it being the best FPS on the Wii isn't saying much saying it's 'goddamn good' is isn't it?

I don't mind. Sometimes you just want a fun game. This comming from a guy who gets his indie fag on whenever he talks about Braid.

Please tell me someone other then me noticed this picture and the picture in his post right below this look INCREDIBLY SIMILAR. I know it's just a coincidence but still...pretty awesome.

I mightn't be able to judge the game from his "preview" but one thing the article makes very clear is the unbridled hatred this guy has for the wii..

I feel sorry for him that he has to put his hand on a wii remote to provide for his family.

I dunno I found the preview to be pretty much what I was expecting, a fairly standerd FPS thats fun to play. I hate to bring it up but your kidding your selfs if you think this game would get the huge amount of attention it has got on wii on any other console.

Just be glad it's sounding pretty good and it is on the Wii. :)

I find myself somewhere between flabzill and hyp3rlink on this one...

Sure, its probably not going to set the entire world on fire. But the voice on this preview runs a line like a good thing *can't* be said without tempering it, thickly, with a statement of disinterest.

I dunno. Its like sending a scientist to write a poem.

This isn't even the only High Voltage Software FPS on the Wii. They also have the Grinder, which is coming out in late 2010.

Holy shit, really? I was planning on getting this game before, but now I'm definitely buying it. I don't care whether its "innovative" or "original", I just want a fun game to play.

Thank you Destructoid. All i wanted and expected from the Conduit was to be a good game which is fine. Besides, the main selling point are going to be the sweet ass controls. I can't wait to play it.

Really? That surprised me! I remember it was a cool title back in the days, but I don't dare to go back and play it as it's probably going to suck ass.

I feel like exactly what the Wii needs is a good, if generic, shooter. Halo, when it came out in 2001, did not impress me at first. But the reason for its popularity was not that it was innovative or mindblowing. It was simply good at everything it did.

So, it just may revitalize hardcore gaming on the Wii. But then, this is 2009, not 2001. So yeah, probably not.

If this game came out on any other console, I wouldn't give a damn. But since this is for the Wii, I guess I can cut it some slack.
