E3 09: Hands-on with New Super Mario Bros. Wii photo

When I saw the unveiling of New Super Mario Bros. Wii I got all traditional Chad excited and all (ya' know: arms flailing, high pitch screming), but it wasn't until later when I realized what is pretty darn significant about this upcoming Wii release: New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be the first traditional 2D Mario game played on a big, normal television set since the days of the SNES. Seriously, that is crazy!

Once I realized this, of course, I got even more excited and couldn't wait to get my shaky little hands on the game on the E3 show floor.

But did I like it? Well, it is me we are talking about, so unless the game actually figured out a way to punch my own mother in the face, I was probably going to love it. But, hey, maybe that happened? You won't find out if New Super Mario Bros. Wii punched my mom in the face until you hit the jump and read my hands-on impressions.

As most of you know by now, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a sequel of sorts to the best-selling game of the same name (sans the "Wii" part) for the Nintendo DS. Luckily, it is a brand new game and not just a simple upgraded port. Whew!

Most significantly, the game features simultaneous 4-player co-op, which is a first for a Mario game. And before you jump into the comments, yes, playing it reminded me a lot of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures for the GameCube. And that is most definitely a good thing (I love that game!).

Oh, and one more thing before I give you these impressions: I was a little concerned that New Super Mario Bros. Wii would be nothing more than a multi-player party game without a significant story or any really emphasis on playing by yourself. To my relief, however, the Nintendo associate informed me that New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a full, traditional Mario adventure (world map, bosses, and all) that can also be enjoyed with up to four players (obviously this way of playing being the best).

So, while the game was designed with multi-player in mind, there are no worries about being able to tackle this epic Mario adventure with none other than you, a bowl of ice cream, and your cute puppy sleeping at your feet. Great news for single players like me!

As for the game ... well, how should I put this: it is quite the awesome experience.

Imagine everything you love about every Mario game and putting it together in a slick, polished, multi-player package. At the Nintendo booth on the show floor, New Super Mario Bros. Wii could only be played with four players. If there weren't enough people to play (that was never a problem), the Nintendo associates would jump in to give you the full experience.

Playing a Mario game with other people on the screen at the same time sounds like nothing special, but in practice it is unique, addictive, and gloriously entertaining. Everything about a normal Mario game is intact: you run around, collecting coins, stomping enemies, and bashing blocks to find hidden power-ups. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, however, all of this is a given a slightly competitive edge. At the end of each level, when playing with more than one person, the game tallies how many coins were collected and how many enemies were defeated. Each type of coin and each type of enemy is given a point value, and whoever has the most points at the end of a level is the victor! In a cool twist, whoever hits the traditional Mario flagpole at the end first gets a little bonus, while the other players only have three seconds to grab the pole as well to receive any extra points at all.

The demo offered a whopping ten different levels to play, each displaying classic Mario settings, from a desert landscape to a field of ice. Inside each of these levels is some of the most creative and giggle-inducing level design you have every seen: platforms sway from side to side, giant gears turn in out of huge pools of lava, platformers twist and turn in the air over bottomless pits. And all of this looks absolutely beautiful. If you missed 2D graphics before, you will almost start to cry after playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The way the sprites rotate and the backgrounds scroll -- it's all classic stuff and will leave any retro fan with a giant smile on their face.

As far as control goes, I know there are a lot of people that are concerned it may feel like the far too floaty New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS. The good news: it feels much better than that game -- characters move a lot less like they are constantly walking on a bed of ice. The bad news: it still is not as tight (as of now) as some classic SNES 2D Mario games like Super Mario World or its sequel, Yoshi's Island. But, rest assured, it feels fine and just as intuitive as any Mario game that has come out before it.

One of the best things about the game is just how clever the multi-player stuff comes into play. For example: there are three giant Mario coins in each level that are worth a ton of points. A lot of times they are in tough locations that can only be accessed with the help of another player. And by "help" I mean, you have to use their body to grab it without them really knowing it. Like, if you jump on another players head you will get a huge boost in height. When there is a Mario coin just out of reach, and all players are clamoring to jump on each other's heads to reach it, it's hilarious ... and so much fun!

I could go on about all the little touches I adored about the game, but I will force myself to stop here (besides, finding this stuff out for yourself is part of the fun). I will mention that Yoshi is back, and you can eat fellow players and spit then into pits (amazing!). A bunch of new power-ups are going to be introduced, but only two were available to us: the propeller hat (jump extra high and float around!) and the penguin suit (slide on your belly to break blocks and look cute!). Oh, and the Koopalings are back. Um, yeah ... awesome.

I will leave by saying New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a must buy. Not only is it a new 2D Mario game (best thing ever!), it is an endlessly fun multi-player game and one of the most unique and entertaining games I have played at E3 thus far. It goes without saying that I was pleasantly surprised with what New Super Mario Bros. Wii had to offer. I loved it!

Based on my hands-on time with the game, I am giving my impressions of New Super Mario Bros. Wii a 9.5.*

*This is a ridiculous scoring system and has nothing to do with the final game. I just thought it would be fun to score all the games I play this week based on my hands-on time with them all.

Great preview dude, it's just making me want the game even more, which I thought wasn't possible!

Looks pretty cool, I'll probably get it.

Also Mr K approves of the scoring system. Because you obviously need my approval.

I'm so glad to read that there is a proper single-player mode. All of the other previews that I read never really cleared that up. So even curmudgeonly old hermits like me can play!

Why does the word amazing only appear once within this article, and without caps??

Is the pause when another player gets a powerup annoying? I heard naia say it was the only problem she had.

I'm even more psyched for this than I am for Galaxy 2. New 2D Mario FTW!

This sounds great! I think I was one of maybe 12 people worldwide who thought playing LoZ: Four Swords was worth the hassle with the link cables and GBAs and everything. This sounds like a Mario version of 4 swords, and that's amazing!

Glad to hear that it will be just as fun for one as for four. And I can't believe I didn't realize this was the first TV sidescroller since the Super NES! Words can't describe how excited I am for this game!

Also, KOOPALINGS!

Looks like a DS game. Really though, the graphics look like shit. I know it's Mario, and the main appeal should be it's fun factor but something is wrong when another game in the series that came out 19 fucking years ago, 3 hardware generations ago looks ten times better. (Talking about Super Mario World here.) I guess Nintendo no longer necessarily means quality.

2D graphics? Sprites? Isn't this game fully polygonal like New Super Mario Bros. DS?

I'm glad you said that it has great level design. While I loved NSMBDS, and the idea of playing a 4-player version on my Wii sounds great, the clip they showed during Nintendo's conference yesterday had lackluster stage design. It just seemed like their were running and jumping for no reason. The stage looked very bland. This preview gives me hope, though. :)

It looked like more of the same, but then suddenly, I was blown away by the multiplayer, yoshis, and the return of the Koopalings. And to think, I thought Nintendo didn't care about the Koopalings after all this time. How wrong I was.

@Monodi: I'm sorry, trying hard at what exactly? Giving my honest opinion? Because that's what I was doing, and I must say it comes pretty easily. If you'd care to refute anything I said, or share a different opinion I'd be glad to hear it but I stand firmly behind what I said. I'm disappointed with the graphics. After 19 years we finally get a new sidescroller Mario for consoles and it looks butt ugly. Sorry, I'm a little disappointed. SMW had gorgeous art; I can't help but see a loss of potential. I'm just tried of seeing this happen, on both the Wii and especially the DS, since 3D almost always looks like shit, yet the majority of devs seem to love doing it.

@Spooky Electric,
Actually, good point: The characters are composed of 3D polygons, so "sprites" was a bad word. When you see the game in action, though, everything is rendered to look like retro-era sprites, especially the environment. Seriously, when you see some or the platforms rotate and move you will be very pleased by how beautiful everything looks. :)

@eternalplayer2345,
Huh. Interesting. Now that you mention it, I didn't even really notice the pause at all. I guess that means it didn't bother me. :)

No specific release date, but I think it is coming out later this year! :D

... but don't hold me to that. I have heard so many release dates today I am getting them all confused. :)

I would have loved if the four character choices were the same as Super Mario Bros. 2, with the same unique strengths/weaknesses. That would have been a nice nod to past games.

As long as it has a 2D platforming design, the koopa kids and actually tries to appeal to us rather than Nintendo saying "Here's a game you hardcore bastards now go back to the basement before I change my mind" I'm cool. BTW what's the control scheme? is it Wiimote sideways or wiimote and nunchuck because I would love it if it was wiimote sideways like super paper mario except GOOD

This might actually make me touch the Wii my parents bought themselves to play Wii fit on. Ughhhhhh.

I've been saying since before the Wii hit shelves that what they need to make is a new Super Mario Bros. side-scroller. I mean, how hot would a redone Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3 (or whatever) sell? Same level design, just with cool updated graphics and some new tech in place. I'd buy it, and I'm not a Nintendo fanboy.

This totally needs a level editor. It's practically screaming for one. LBP-style level creation and sharing with Mario controls would be pure win. Unfortunately, since that would just be too awesome, we know it will never happen.

I love the return to 2D gameplay, but why even bother with the 3D models? The High-Res sprites used in the Paper Mario series are so much more beautiful than this. Hopefully the Boy and His Blob remind people how great 2D can be on a powerful system.
