E3 09: Hands-on with Cave Story Wii photo

Cave Story is probably one of my favorite games of all time. It has everything a great game ought to have; fun gameplay, a variety of weapons, a compelling story, and best of all, amazing sprite work and music. When it was announced that Pixel agreed to work on a port to WiiWare, I was pretty much ecstatic. Ever since then, we've only been strung along with images of the game's progress. They show that Pixel is making some great graphical changes to the game, but I really wanted to see those polished pixels in action. Today, I got my wish.

At Nintendo's booth, they have coupled all of their upcoming WiiWare game demos into one station. There are a few other really interesting game to play there, but for the duration of my time at that specific console, I only played Cave Story Wii, my mouth agape at what I was doing. I was playing Cave Story, the little indie game that could, in front of a whole crowd of people at E3!

Hit the jump to read my impressions of the game after a bit of time spent alone with it.

Cave Story Wii is pretty much a straight port of the PC version of the game, as we all were expecting. It will have exclusive content, but everything I played was pulled straight from the original. And really, I don't feel any disappointment toward that. More than anything, people deserve to play the game in its original, pure form, and that's exactly what the Cave Story Wii demo provided.

The controls feel exactly the same as the PC version, even though there was a controller in front of me, rather than a keyboard. The game uses the sideways Wiimote control scheme, and it's as simple as simple can be: 1 shoots, 2 jumps. The D pad controls the direction of the shot and movement. It is pretty much perfect in its simplicity, although the main character keeps his floaty jump from the PC version of the game. I had a bit of trouble making a few jumps over deadly obstacles that required a little more precision than usual, but the floatiness never made things harder than they needed to be.

As I've mentioned several times by now, the game looks simply amazing. Once you start a new game, there are all the cutscenes and areas that fans of the game have been familiar with for years, only much more strikingly beautiful. The characters and environments have all been redrawn to be bigger and more detailed. Even the game's simplistic title screen has had a complete overhaul. It may not sound like a big thing to say that the main character now has a mouth that you can see, but it most certainly is in this case. As for the sound, I couldn't really tell you about it. The one thing that I wish I could have gotten a better grasp on during my playthrough was the music. I've been worried about the updated sound ever since I first saw the Cave Story Wii website, and noting that the music samples, while enhanced, didn't quite capture the same spirit of the game as the chiptunes Pixel originally produced did.

All in all, I truly believe that Cave Story Wii is a WiiWare release to look out for, if you haven't been looking forward to it already. The game translates very well to the Wii, and it will finally grant us a chance to give Daisuke a little bit of compensation for all of his years of hard work. It may already be available as a free PC game, but it will most certainly be worth purchasing on the Wii, if only to support the artist.

Ashley, I wish there was a device that I could use to instantly switch places with you so I could have experienced this greatness. Even though Ive already played through Cave Story on my PC, I can not wait for the Wii release. I wonder if they have "Hell" in the game. Also this would be an awesome chance for Nintendo to implement stats for Speed Runs.

Sounds great, and it is a good thing you can play it in its original state, or updated.

It's still slated for Q2 2009, so, soon! But I don't know anything more than that. :( I couldn't finish the game or anything, but it looks as if it's pretty close to completion!

In Anthony's Indie Nation review of Cave Story he mentioned that he thought that if he could use a time machine to take the game back to the early 90's and publish it on the Super Nintendo it would be considered a classic today. Now that's it's on the Wii you could say that the Classic Control offers the chance to play Cave Story in the way it was always meant to be played.

It's been a few years since I've beat Cave Story on PC. I can't wait to play it on Wiiware!

Question about the controls. Dpad is movement, 1 and 2 is shot and jump. But what about menu, weapon change and such? I need to be able to change weapons fast during my hell-runs!

Oh, and I've heard that you can customize the looks and sound of the game!
In the options menu, you can choose to have the original or remixed music and/or graphics. So you can easily have more detailed graphics, while still keep the nice music from the original!

Really looking forward to this, Pixel really deserves the money!

@Strandli: Great question, and I apologize for forgetting to cover it! I didn't want to take up the console for too long, so I never got to a point where I had a weapon other than the Polar Star, therefore, I didn't have any other weapon to switch to. I'll try to get some more time with it later on so that I can test the weapon switch, and I'll either update this post or make a C-blog about it, because I kinda flubbed up not getting to test that very important detail. To be honest though, I'm not worried about it, because everything else has been mapped so well to the Wiimote.

And thank you for the info! I'm glad you can mix and match the styles. I'm probably going to play with the new graphics and old music. :)

Strandli: This is without having played the game (duh!) but I imagine + will be the menu and either A or - will be weapon change (maybe both).

Whew! I was worried when I commented I would step on a response by Ashley.

@Ashley: You aren't going to give the remixed music a chance? I'm just saying that in your post you seem so sure that you'll play with the old music. Were you able to clearly hear the remixes at E3?

I'm jealous of every pair of hands that have been able to fondle this drool-worthy title at E3.
I'll be contented with a release date :<

@FistfulOAwesome: I could barely hear the sound at all, but the faint little bits that I could hear through the blaring Mario theme in Nintendo's booth sounded like it was done in the same vein as the reworked version of Moonsong that plays on the Cave Story Wii website. It's alright, but something about the new sound just doesn't resonate with me the same as the old sound does. I'll most certainly give all the tracks a listen because I'm really curious how they have all been updated, but I'm fairly positive I won't like the new ones nearly as much. I'll most likely play through the first time with the new music, and if I don't like it, I'll use the old music for all the subsequent playthroughs I'm most likely to do.

Sorry for being so rambly! Hahah.

"Cave Story is probably one of my favorite games of all time."

Same here Ashley. Even if the port was completely god awful, I'd still buy it just to support Pixel, and to show my love for his indie gem. Thankfully, the port is looking to be a fantastically done job, and I am very eager for it's release on WiiWare. Thanks for the hands-on.

I'll probably be playing this with the updated visuals. But I'll be keeping the original music, thank you very much!

Cave Story has heart. I'd be more than glad to drop 20 bucks on this as it is, but lo and behold, it looks even better.

Yay, Pixel!

I am totally down with this. I never finished playing through on the PC, but I think I would if I had a controller in my hands rather than playing with a keyboard.

Haha! Ashley, it totally figures I met you by the Cave Story setup at E3. Anyway, that was me -- and thanks again for posing with me for a quick picture.

I'm crossing my fingers that Cave Story is nearing completion. I ended up crashing the game twice, which wasn't particularly reassuring.

And now back to lurking
