E3 09: Halo ODST going for $60, new controller coming photo

Okay, so, wasn't expecting a full retail price for ODST here. Yup, it's going to go for $59.99. There's also going to be a collector's edition which will go for $99.99 and will include a Halo ODST themed controller.

As for the new mode Firefight, it sounds lot like Gears of War 2's Horde mode. It's a cooperative multiplayer mode where players have to fight together as ODST soldiers taking on waves of enemies. You'll also be able to play as Sgt. Johnson if you pre-order the game from certain retailers.

We'll see three new maps on top of all the Legendary, Heroic and Mythic maps bringing a total of 24 maps. Another interesting fact here is that ODST is going to be two discs and the second disc will have all the multiplayer maps.

Finally, ODST will include a beta key for Halo: Reach's multiplayer.

Check out the full press release after the break. What do you think about the pricing for ODST

Developed exclusively for Xbox 360 by acclaimed developer Bungie, “Halo 3: ODST” is a new game in the “Halo” saga that lets people experience events leading up to the epic story told in “Halo 3” through the eyes of an ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), as they search for clues leading to the whereabouts of their scattered squad and the motivations behind the Covenant’s invasion of New Mombasa. The release adds a new dimension to an all-encompassing universe that gamers around the world have known and loved for close to eight years.

“Halo 3: ODST” also introduces Firefight, a new cooperative multiplayer* mode where up to four players can assume the role of an ODST squad and fight together to take on increasingly challenging waves of enemies. Also included are three new “Halo 3” multiplayer maps on a 2nd standalone disc, which includes all original “Halo 3” maps, as well as the “Legendary,” “Heroic,” and “Mythic” Map packs for a total of 24 maps.

“Halo 3: ODST” is available for pre-order in both a standard package and a “Halo 3: ODST Collector’s Pack” which includes the game and a new and exclusive Wireless Controller. Those that pre-order “Halo 3: ODST” at participating retailers worldwide will receive a token to unlock Sgt. Johnson as a playable character in Firefight.

Features: Top features include the following:

• All-new campaign content. The “Halo 3: ODST” campaign explores mysterious events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in “Halo 3.” Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. This new chapter captures the same great feel of previous “Halo” experiences while offering fans new tactics, tools and weapons to defeat the Covenant.

• A new hero: Prepare to drop. ODSTs or "Orbital Drop Shock Troopers" are highly-trained special forces operators. Known for their courage, valor and willingness to tackle missions no sane soldier would, ODSTs pride themselves on being the first unit deployed into hostile situations, often in one-man drop-pods that burn through planetary atmospheres at break-neck speed.

• Expanded multiplayer experience. No “Halo” game would be complete without groundbreaking multiplayer content. “Halo 3: ODST” introduces an entirely new way to play “Halo” with Firefight, a cooperative multiplayer mode included on the campaign disc that lets up to four people jump immediately into combat. As an ODST squad, you will face increasingly challenging waves of enemies together, striving to earn the highest scores possible, while various “Halo 3” “Skulls” are progressively activated. The experience is intense and ever-evolving. “Halo 3: ODST” also includes a separate, standalone multiplayer disc which includes three new “Halo 3” multiplayer maps, all original “Halo 3” maps, as well as the “Legendary,” “Heroic,” and “Mythic” Map packs for a total of 24 maps.

• Ever-growing community options. Players will continue to enjoy all the great “Halo 3” technological innovations, including Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring and four-player co-op over Xbox LIVE. All of the new “Halo 3” multiplayer maps fully support the Forge editor, offering near endless gameplay customization possibilities for fans.

• Key to “Halo: Reach.” As a special bonus for fans, all copies of “Halo 3: ODST” will provide access to the “Halo: Reach” multiplayer beta when the beta goes live. More information about the “Halo: Reach” multiplayer beta will be shared at a later date.

Pricing is a bit of a dick move since it's only a half assed expansion.

However Microsoft knows that the fans will pick up any overpriced Halo crap so I guess it was kinda expected.

I think if it delivers the same experience as a stand alone game then the pricing is great.

I think the price is a bit too expensive. I'd shell out 40 dollars but 60 dollars is a bit too much. But still this game will be successful and make millions for Bungie and Microsoft. Also, that is one sexy controller.

A controller that matches my Zune? Noice.

As for the price, I was probably gonna rent it anyways so, eh. Unless there's something we all don't know about yet that will blow us all away, I wasn't planning on buying this anyways.

They need to release a cheaper version without the mappacks as some of us already have heroic, legendary, and mythic. i really dont need them again.

oh well im glad they are releasing all the map packs so i can get my friends playing halo again since im the only one with all 3

That controller does look pretty awesome, but the price still doesn't feel worth it. Also, the D-Pad still looks the same and they could have taken advantage of this, by making a new controller with a less terrible D-Pad or something. So much for that opportunity.

Controller rant aside, the game price is ridiculous for an expansion. But Firefight does interest me, I'll wait and see how it will go.

The awful part of this story is that its still going to sell millions. A $60 expansion pack will sell because it has the damn Halo name attached to it, and Microsoft and Bungie will be laughing in your faces with each copy sold... sometimes this industry pisses me off >.>

It seems to be a campaign the size of Halo 3's, brand new playtype along with Halo 3's normal multi along with new maps.

Why are people so against the price-point?

Wonder if it'll look as ugly as the Halo 3 360 did?

@Mr Kite: Halo 3 is actually one of the better looking games due in part to it's art style. The same can't be said about Call of Duty World at War or 4.

Also, what other console was Halo 3 on that you had to mention the XBOX 360?

Well since they already said that the campaign wasnt even half as long as halo 3, then this seems hardly worth it.

Then again, like pointed out a million times, its halo and halo will sell millions.

So if it's more substantial that originally assumed, then yes, $59.99 is fine with me. If it has fall damage, cool weapons and essentially combines COD with Halo 3, then yes, $59.99 is totally fine with me there too.

Firefight sounds awesome, but unless they've decided to make the campaign last at least 6 hours, I'm unsure if I'll pick this up.

I will get that controller.

@ de BLOO

They had a matching controller for the Halo 360, this is different.

I own the 360 edition Necros. It's just diarrhea green... but this new controller just took the artwork from the actual console then just slapped HALO: ODST on it.

But Im not saying I don't like it.

I'm thinking I'll bite and nab the hundred dollar version. My current wireless controller refuses to charge my battery pack and I've been wanting to get a new one anyways. Plus, I'm their bitch and I'll be getting ODST day one anyways.

Oh boy! Another controller that isn't the one that they made three of in Europe with the fixed D-pad!

I seem to remember a dev or someone say that they didn't view this as a full-priced title, content-wise, when they discussed it last year. But I guess since they can slap a beta in as an added "value", they feel it's worth $60 now?

pfft...
